CHAPTER I

A. Active Voice
Active voice is a grammatical voice common in many of the world's languages.
Active voice is used in a clause whose subject expresses the main verb's agent. In the active
voice, the subject always “does” the action of the sentence. Chronologically, the subject will
come before the verb in the sentence.
Most writing occurs in the active writing voice, as it is generally clearer and more concise. In
each of the sentences, the subject comes before the verb and object. The subject is “doing”
the verb in the sentence. This is called the active voice.

The Formula Of Active Voice

Subject + Action (Verb) + Direct Object

B. Passive Voice
The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that experiences an
action rather than the person or object that performs the action. In other words, the most
important thing or person becomes the subject of the sentence. Sometimes we use the
passive voice because we don't know or do not want to express who performed the action.
The passive voice is often used in formal texts. Switching to the active voice will make
your writing clearer and easier to read.

The Formula of Passive Sentence :

Subject + To Be (Conjugated) +Past Particple + Rest Of the sentence

C.The difference between Active and Passive Voice.

The active writing voice is contrasted with the passive voice. The active and passive
voices put emphasis on different elements of the sentence.
The active voice occurs when the subject “does” the action of the sentence.
The passive voice occurs when the action is done by what seems like it should be the object.

-When using active voice, the subject performs the action noted by the main verb.

3
-When using the passive voice, the subject is acted upon by another agent or an unknown
something.

D. Basic rules For changing Avtive voice to Passive Voice.

1. The Subject willshift to the place of the object and the object will take place of the subject
in passive voice.
E.g :
Active : He buys Camera
Passive: A camera was bought by him
2. Only past participal of the verb (V3) will be used as main verb in passive voice for all
tenses.
E.g :
Active: She drinks water
Passivee : Water was drunk by her
3. The word “by” will be used before subject in the passive voice
E.g :
Active : She eat an aplle
Passive : An apple was eaten by her

4. Other words such as “with” or “to” may also used instead word ‘by’ depending upon the
subject of the sentence. These words are used in a few cases.
E.g :

Passive : He is Known to me.

CHAPTER II

A. Question Words

We use interrogative pronouns to ask questions. They are: who, which, whom,

whatand whose. These are also known as wh-words. Questions using these are
called wh-questions:

Who  called last night?

Which  keys are yours?

Whom  do I ask for at the desk?

What  did you do when the electricity failed?

Whose  watch is this?

B. Interrogative pronouns: uses

We use who and whom on their own:

Who  paid?

Whom  did you speak to?

We can use whose, which and what either on their own (as pronouns) or with a

noun head (underlined):

As pronouns With a noun head

Whose  are these books? Whose books are these?

5
Which did you buy? Which  sweater did you buy?

What is the number on the door? What  number is your house?

We can use who, whose, which and what both as subject and object:

Who  is the best footballer in the world? (who as subject)

Who  did you meet? (who as object)

What  happened next? (what as subject)

What  did you buy? (what as object)

Who or whom?

Warning:

We use whom as an object in formal styles. When we use a preposition

before whom, it is even more formal. We don’t normally use it in speaking:

Whom  did you give the book to? (formal)

To whom  did you give the book? (very formal) Or, less formally: Who did you
give the book to?

What or which?

We use what when we ask about specific information from a general range of

possible answers:

What’s the tallest building in the world?

What  did you say? I couldn’t hear you.

What’s your address?

We use which when we ask for specific information from a restricted range of

possible answers:

Which  one is your sister?

6
Which  airport do we leave from, Heathrow or Gatwick?

Which book is yours?
