Chapter I
Introduction

Earthquake drill is one of the most important things that

should've done by every school here in the Philippines. 2-4 times once a

year Arellano University, Juan Sumulong Campus conducts an earthquake

drill to maintain the preparedness of each student. The drill starts when

the siren alarm, the students will do the drop-cover-hold and will start to

walk faster and not panicking then going through an open field of the

campus. Earthquake drill is a very serious drill which is one of the

preparations for the anticipated massive earthquake or the big one.

Earthquake drill is to test the ability of a person and to see what their

reaction, the things that inside their mind of what are they supposed to do

during an earthquake drill. Though it is scary, most of the students are

clowning or acting silly while the drill is still ongoing, which leads the

leaders to assume that until now, some of the students in the Arellano

University are still treating this serious drill as a joke. However, some of

the students are actively participating and considering that earthquake

drill is a serious matter between life and death.

We all know that earthquake is the 2nd most dangerous activity

that we can experience in our country and earthquake drills is our way of

preparedness if this calamity occurs in no time. Despite the poor reaction

and performance of all students in Arellano university at Juan Sumulong

Campus. Thus, only the experience can attest to how effective is the

earthquake drill we perform. More likely this research is about knowing

the experience of the selected students about the earthquake drill, it’s like

did they participate while doing something else, did the activity make

them angry, or even did they learn something from the activity.

Knowing the experiences of the selected students will help us, but

not just us and the other people knowing our research of what happened

when there is an earthquake drill and what are the other people doing.

This study will find some of the other research that is connected to other

research in different countries and in our country that is about earthquake

drill. We will look for some research to know if some of our research is

almost the same as the other research so we can prove that our research

can be helpful just like the other research about earthquake drill. This kind

of activity is needed for other students to be aware what might happen

when an earthquake happened without others knowing when will it come,

and "the big one" is the one where everyone is scared of, and what are

the things might happen, because "the big one" is very strong

earthquake, so we will do our best to let everyone know that being

prepared is very useful when it comes to dangerous things. This study

also will look for the problems about the participants or what are the

things that they might be doing, like not caring about the drill. Everyone

should be prepared for the earthquake that might come to other places

not just in Arellano University, Juan Sumulong Campus only, because

everyone knowing what to do is a very big help and people can help

others for those people who needs help in such a situation while the
earthquake is ongoing. Now you will know some of our research about the

"A Phenomenological Study of the Experience Of Selected SHS Students

About the Earthquake drill happened in Arellano University, Juan

Sumulong Campus", we hope this kind of research help or give you

information about our topic and we hope that after reading this research

helps other to give information to other people and always be prepare for

the any calamities.

Statement of the problem:

Major problem: This study aims to investigate about the experiences and

behavior of selected students that earthquake drill happened in Arellano

University, Juan Sumulong, Campus. Some of the things that can help

others to know what are the questions that they might want to know

about the research.

Specific problems: Specifically, it seeks answer to the following questions.

1. What is the experience of the selected students in senior high school

students in Juan Sumulong campus in Earthquake drill?

2. What is the behavior of the selected students in senior high school

students in Juan Sumulong campus while the earthquake drill is

happening?

3. How does earthquake drill work?

4. How can we tell if there was an earthquake drill happening?

5. How helpful is earthquake drill?

Scope and Delimitation:

Title of study: A Phenomenological Study of the Experience of

Selected SHS Students About the Earthquake drill Happened in

Arellano University, Juan Sumulong Campus.

The focus of this study is about selected SHS students that

participate to the earthquake drill. This study would focus on the different

experiences and behavior of the student during and after the earthquake

drill. This includes the selected students, different point of view, opinions

and even biases towards the earthquake drill. Moreover, we would also

look on their behavior and approach towards our questioning and

investigation.

The participants (the students) of this study would be limited and only for

selected SHS students in Juan Sumulong Campus. The students involved

in this study will be interviewed by the researchers. The data of this study

would come from the words of the students interviewed by the

researchers. In addition, the researchers would do their best to put

accurate and precise information to complete this study. We will give ask

them what we needed for the information needed.

Significance of the study

This study will serve as an instrument to know how students react while

the earthquake drill is happening.

This study will be helpful:

To the students This study will help the students determine how

important it is to have knowledge about the earthquake and what is

earthquake drill.

To the teachers this study will help them to teach students and other to

know what to do.

To the parents This study will be a big help to the parents in a matter of

being aware on how their children react during the earthquake drill and

how they respond in the specific event. This will help them to teach their

children the do's and don’ts during the event.

To the school This study is beneficial to the school, because they will be

able to know the things that they need to improve while the drill is

happening. They will see how cautious their school administration is.

To the people who doesn’t know about earthquake drill, because

this research can help them know some things that they need to be doing

and to have idea.

REVIEW AND RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter provided the review of related literature both Foreign

and Local studies from different authors and researchers, many of these

studies are connected to the importance of the selected SHS students

about their experiences about the earthquake drill happened at Arellano

University, Juan Sumulong Campus.

Foreign literature

“Mexico held an earthquake drill two hours before its

latest deadly quake hit”

According to Tripti Lahiri, a news reporter reported that at 11am

local time Tuesday morning, Mexico held a national public earthquake

drill, with more than 7 million people participating. Two hours later, at

1:14pm, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit, on the anniversary of the

country’s deadliest earthquake ever.

Mexico holds an earthquake drill every year on Sept. 19—an

event that is part preparedness exercise and part memorial to the

devastation of the 1985 8.1-magnitude earthquake, a traumatic national

event that left anywhere from 5,000 to 30,000 dead.

Tuesday’s quake killed more than 200 people, and the toll is

periodically being revised. The tremor, which had its epicenter about 75
miles (121 km) from Mexico’s capital, was the second earthquake to hit

the seismically vulnerable country in two weeks. Another on Sept. 7 killed

about 90. Five states affected by or close to the earlier quake decided not

to participate in the Sept. 19 drill this year. While this month’s

earthquakes claimed lives and damaged buildings, the lessons Mexico

took from the 1985 quake have been credited with reducing deaths,

injuries, and building collapses.

This literature proved that earthquake is a highly dangerous and

needs preparation however there are people who treat this as a joke and

worthless thing to do. Earthquake drill is necessary for you to acquire

experiences to survive an earthquake disaster. (Tripti Lahiri, September

20, 2017)
"Disaster and Earthquake preparedness of children and

schools in Istanbul, Turkey"

According to the article by Taylor & Francis (July 15, 2015)

“Geomatics, natural hazards and risk”. It is known that children are very

sensitive physically and emotionally and more vulnerable in emergencies

than adults. Hence, they need to be protected and defended by

governments, parents and regulations.

Earthquakes do not affect only residential buildings but also

cause the damages at hospitals and schools. Historical earthquakes reveal

the fact that the vulnerability of school buildings is disproportionately high

compared to other buildings. In 1999, the Chi-Chi Earthquake, wiped out

43 Taiwan schools in the Nantou and Taichung area and a total of 700

schools nationwide were damaged. In 2001, the Gujarat Earthquake in

India caused severe damage to 11,600 schools. In 2005, the Kashmir

Earthquake resulted in the collapse of 8000 schools in the North-West part

of the country and 1300 schools in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

UNICEF stated that in this earthquake, at least 17,000 school children died

because children were attending morning classes. In the 2008 Sichuan

Earthquake the rate of child mortality was substantial with the death of

19,000 students and the total destruction of about 7000 schools

(Wisner 2006).

In order to increase awareness of school-age children against

disasters, some training practices are conducted in schools during the

week of the disaster that is repeated every year. These practices start

with sudden and unannounced ringing of school bells as if a disaster had

happened. During disaster practice, the students in the classrooms stop

writing and drawing immediately, and drop, hold and cover themselves

near chairs or lie in a fetal position called the life triangle on the floor

under chairs. Afterwards, with instruction from their teacher, they calmly

go out of the classrooms toward the school garden in order to stand

together. This practice is often considered as a formality and is not taken

seriously. Although teachers have very good attitudes during training,

they do not have enough knowledge in detail for disaster preparedness.

This literature is closely related to our research study for it proves

that without experience in earthquake drills you can’t survive. It also

mentions the effect of earthquake to schools, the lessons they learned

after the earthquake claimed many lives of students and they’ve

conducted to better prepare the safety and acquire experience of

students for a later earthquake disaster to occur. (Taylor & Francis, July

15, 2015)
"SWOT analysis of an Earthquake mock drill: A case

study"

According to Roman Sharma at India there is a place called

"Chandigarh"this is where the foot of great Himalayas can be found and

it’s a high earthquake prone zone (Zone IV) also called as city beautiful.

Since back then the place experience magnitude 6 and above and might

be a lot stronger earthquake might come at the near future.

One day they execute adrill for the preparedness of the whole

staff, the siren rings and everyone quickly left their chairs and hid under

their tables or safer place. After a minute the siren stops ringing and

everyone move away from the buildings and go to the evacuation place. A

minute later the fire fighters and some ambulance help the other injured

people and the fire fighters put the fires and then the critical patience get

their first aid, then they got shifted to the hospital. The electricity in the

area were blocked off. After 3 hours of the drill everything worked out

together and some of the people were rescued and this is a sign that the

people will be ready when there is an earthquake.

The research is about the preparedness of the people if there's an

earthquake that is happening or before an earthquake hit. This shows that

they are ready and prepared before the earthquake drill happened and

they all know what to do and they finished the drill as they planned.

"Japan conducts emergency drills in preparation for the

huge quake predicted to hit Tokyo area"

The government conducted full-scale drills on Sunday called "the

official Disaster Prevention Day" to prepare for the coming powerful

earthquake and predicted directly under the Tokyo metropolitan area. The

drill will be at a scenario of 7.3 magnitude temblor occurring under the

capitals’ 23 wards at 7 a.m., registering up to the maximum level of 7 on

the Japanese seismic intensity scale. The drill aimed at improving

coordination between the central and local governments. Kensaku Morita,

governor of Chiba Prefecture, adjacent to Tokyo, requested to help to

rescue and give relief supplies for the residents that affected by the

disaster. The city of Funabashi, in Chiba Prefecture, that is where Abe

emergency disaster response team. In the drills, participants practiced

maritime search and rescue operations and the management volunteer

centers. The government in 2013 estimated the probability of an

earthquake with a magnitude of around 7 occurring under the Tokyo

metropolitan area in 30 years at 70 percent. A lot of people might die

because of the collapsing building and because from a powerful

earthquake. This study about the earthquake drill in Japan is about the

preparedness of the citizens from a coming powerful earthquake and

they're being helped by the higher up people for the earthquake drill, to

prepare and know what might happen. (The Japan times, September 1,

2019)
The 20th national “Earthquake and Safety” Drill in

Schools

The 20th national “Earthquake and Safety” Drill was held in

Fatemeh Pezeski high school in Karaj (Alborz province), on November 28,

2018. Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) organize the

activity and same as the previous years, with help of the other

collaborating department. About 14 million students who participated in

the earthquake drill around the country. They make this research so they

can make the other people be aware and be safe whenever there is an

earthquake.

Tehran and other provinces in the same day also held the fourth

community-based earthquake drill. Other school was chosen if it is a safe

area because of the surrounding buildings. The “Earthquake and Safety

Drill” day is for the people who needs help and to perform correct

sheltering and they even broadcast the activity.

“Earthquake drill tests the preparedness of students

and teachers in Paoay”

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Resiliency

Council (PDRRMRC) led the 2nd National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill at

Paoay National High School on June 20. With the aim to educate and

prepare the students and teacher on disaster preparedness, to officially

start the drill, Marcel Tabije of the PDRRMRC and other heads of Provincial

Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO), Provincial Health Office

(PHO), the Ilocos Norte Provincial Police Office(INPPO), and the Bureau of

Fire Protection (BFP) joined the ceremonial pressing of button which was

facilitated at 2 in the afternoon. Around 500 students performed the

“duck, cover, and hold” technique as they exit their classroom and find

their way to safety and find open area inside the school. Rescue and

medical team are also in touch and actively assist in the re-enactment of

scenarios that may happen in real time or during disaster. (Joreina

Therese A. Blanco, January 21, 2019)

"Isabela students join nationwide quake drill"

An earthquake drill happened at San Mateo, Isabela, more than

1800 participants (students and faculty members) of San Mateo

Vocational High School in the Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

(NSED) on Thursday, Feb. 21.

Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) led Representatives of the Regional

Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and they tell the

participants the proper response and what are they supposed to do for

their safety while the earthquake drill happening or an actual earthquake.

OCD Regional Director Dante Balao said to the quarterly NSED to continue

to educate other for their safety and to let them know what are the thing

that they're supposed to do like duck, cover and hold during an

earthquake.

Balao said this drill is for the survival of the Filipinos and to know

what are the plans so they can evacuate efficiently and Marisol Dumon,

SMVHS principal, said that she hopes that she and the other people do

what are the things that they need to do while a real earthquake hits the

school. (Oliver T. Baccay, February 22, 2019)

“NDRRMC LEADS NATIONWIDE SIMULTANEOUS

EARTHQUAKE DRILL”

Led by Civil Defense in partnership with various national and local

agencies, the drill seeks to strengthen the mechanism for national and

regional coordination, this drill aims to intensify local communities on

earthquake preparedness and to increase the commitment of local

government in safe communities. The event will be attended by NDRRMC

Chairperson and national Defense Secretary Voltaire T Gazmin, also the

Executive Director of NDRRMC and the Civil defense Administrator

undersecretary P Pama, and the Philippine institute of volcanology and

seismology Director Renato U Solidum Jr. The scenario is derived by the

Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS 2004). The

reason for this was due to the preparation of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake

along the west Valley Fault so that the metro manila is having an

earthquake drill and not only here but the whole world is preparing for the

big one coming. Thus Sec. Voltaire Gazmin is not the only the government

that can threatens our safety so we can always be safe. OCD Regional

Officers will lead the earthquake drills in their respective pilot areas. A

total of 22,117 individuals from the 18 regions are expected to participate

in the drill. Attached is the list of the regional venues. (Office of civil

defense, 2014)

"National simultaneous earthquake drill held in Pasig

City, the Philippines"

The national simultaneous earthquake drill in Pasig City, the

Philippines, Nov. 14, 2019. The national simultaneous earthquake drill was

created for the preparedness and for the response of the rescuers during

the following disasters. The rescuers try to practice what are they

supposed to be doing when there is a victim.

After a while they finished rescuing other victims and they

finished the rescuing the victims. The employees cover their head and

protect themselves while the earthquake drill is happening. This kind of

earthquake drill is like almost every other earthquake drill, like they need

to prepare for the earthquake that might come in the near future and they

need to know what are they supposed to do when an earthquake drill is

happening or an actual earthquake is happening, so we need to prepare

and be safe all the time. (Xinhua, November 14, 2019)

LOOK: PHIVOLCS holds nationwide earthquake drill

Department of Science and Technology

(DOST) and Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology

(PHIVOLCS) organized an earthquake drill for various of office organization

and because of the worldwide earthquake drill that will happen.

This kind of earthquake drill is about preparing about the 'the big

one', that can be triggered in Marikina Valley Fault System, according to

PHIVOLCS. DOST-PHIVOLCS also reminds public or other people to be

prepared, and historical surface-rupturing events have higher potential to

generate a large earthquake also known as ‘The Big One,’ and this can

damage lots of place in Philippines.

Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) said that

everyone should be preparing for 'the big one'. The NSED promotes

earthquake awareness and preparedness among members of the

community. (Gabriel Pabico Lalu, June 20, 2019)

Research Methodology

This chapter contains methodology of how the study is

conducted. This chapter includes the research method and design,

instrument of the study, and description of resondents.s

Research Method

A research method is a systematic plan for

conducting research. Sociologists draw on a variety of both qualitative and

quantitative research methods, including experiments, survey research,

participant observation, and secondary data. The researchers will use

phenomenological approach as a method to satisfy this research study.

Phenomenological research is a type of qualitative research which studies

the experience of a person or people from different perspectives and point

of views. By the interviews and personal data gathered to gain insights to

people behaviors and actions. This allow the researchers to understand

the experience of one or more individuals of a phenomenon.

Research Design
The researchers used the qualitative research as the research

design to gather and collect data. According to google the research

design refers to the overall strategy that you choose to integrate the

different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby,

ensuring you will effectively address the research problem; it constitutes

the blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data. This

study is a qualitative research, also a phenomenological study because it

talks about the experiences of the participants. The source of gathered

information will be from the interviews and surveys the researchers will

conduct to understand the different experiences of the student regarding

the earthquake drill phenomenon. The purpose of the study is to know the

experiences of the students during the earthquake drill.

Description of respondents

The respondents of our study are the selected senior high

school students of Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus. The

following students are from different strand, senior high school students.

Those students are given each questionnaire and will be asked for an

interview to fully understand their observation during the event. The

following respondents are involved in earthquake drill, during the said

events. We need at least 10 respondents to gather enough information to

fulfill the study.

We will be looking for 5 grade 11 students and 5 grade 12

students with different strand such us STEM, GA, HUMMS, ICT, and ABM.

Instrument of the study

The research designed a questionnaire to use as a guide and

we will survey to collect data for this study. The selected students will

answer some questions to know their opinion or answers in the statement

of the problem. It’s like knowing about their experience about the

earthquake drill to and we want to gather information for this research.

These questions are related to our research so we can know their ideas.

We will also want to know what other students if their idea is the same or

different.

We will be using camera to capture some pictures of the

selected students and use voice recording so we can make sure that we

won’t give wrong information of what the participants said.

Data Gathering Procedures

We ask for the approval for our research in the adviser, subject

coordinator and the principal of the Arellano University of Juan Sumulong

Campus. We will pass some questionnaire and we will ask them some
question in the questionnaire to know the answer of the selected

participants. While we are questioning, they will hold a questionnaire so

just in case they didn’t hear the question so they can look at the

questionnaire. We want to know if the selected students are in the right

health, so we can make sure the gathered data will be normal and also we

don’t want to disturb them while in class so we will wait for them after

class. We will walk to different classroom where we can find 1 student per

strand. In this different strand and students in senior high school we will

be looking for their answer to get their opinion.
