HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS IN SOLVING ACCOUNTING PROBLEMS

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
This study is designed to seek answers for the following questions:

1) Are students interested and willing to solve accounting problems?

2) What is the extent of gender difference in student’s awareness of


committing errors while solving accounting problems?

3) According to the student’s opinion, what are the common errors committed
by students in solving accounting problems? Is there any gender difference
in this respect?

4) According to the opinion of students, what are the causes for committing
errors in solving accounting problem? Does gender have any influence in
it?

5) Is there any gender difference in committing errors while solving


accounting problem based on the teacher made achievement test?

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims:

 To identify students interest and willingness towards solving accounting


problems.

 To find out whether students are aware of committing errors while solving
accounting problems.
 To analyze the opinion of students regarding the common errors committed and
their causes while solving accounting problems.

 To identify the gender difference in the errors committed by students in solving


accounting problems based on teacher made achievement test.

METHOD OF THE STUDY

The present study was conducted on 100 Higher Secondary Commerce stream
students from St. Aloysius H.S.S. Kollam. The data required for the present study was
collected using a questionnaire developed by the investigator and teacher made
achievement test. Normative survey was therefore adopted as the method for the present
study.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

Data were analysed by using the appropriative descriptive statistical techniques


such as percentage analysis, arithmetic mean and standard deviation

FINDINGS OF THE STUDY

 Majority of the respondents are interested towards accounting problem solving but
at the same time they agree that they make errors while doing accounting
problems.
 The common error committed by students while solving accounting problem is in
the area of solving adjustments and the causes are due to the lack of satisfaction of
guidance provided at school by teachers and as they do not work out accounting
problems at home.
