PK Movie Review

PK, which means “drunk” or “tipsy” in Hindi, is a satirical comedy-drama film directed
by Rajkumar Hirani and written by Abhijat Joshi. The movie tackles about the different cultures,
specifically in religion, which causes confusions and misguidance among people.

The movie starts off with PK, an alien from another planet, landing on Earth. He sees a
man and immediately runs towards him, but he ends up getting robbed by the man.
Unfortunately, it’s PK’s “remote” that got stolen, so he searches the planet in hopes of finding
his “way” home. On his journey on Earth, he meets Jaggu and Bhairao, who both make his stay
on Earth a bit better. PK then realizes how different it is on Earth compared to his planet. While
his planet is uncomplicated, Earth has different cultures, different languages, different religions
and beliefs, which makes it hard for him to adapt. This movie captures the fear and falsehood
humans implicate around faith. It portrays religion in all its imperfectness and how people are
deceived and manipulated. One particular scene melted my heart and it was when PK made
Jaggu realize that Sarfaraz never tricked her and that the letter was meant for the other bride.
Without difficulty, this film successfully pulled at my heartstrings with its plot and great acting
skills. Opening the minds of people and showing the reality of our world is what the film is
trying to convey. It is meant to show the bigger picture on the aspect of religion and faith, how
people are misguided as they accept the “rules” set by their religions. The film is creatively made
and the title automatically suggests you the issue tackled in the story. PK is an analogy or short
term slang commonly used among Indians for drunk guys, but the movie used it as a metaphor
that the religious and political influence are brainwashing the youth minds which spreads terror,
and “drunk” (as metaphors) people are believing them. The movie also made a fair share of
moral lessons that will be helpful and essential for all of us. One evident message that the movie
conveyed is the importance of understanding the different cultures around the world. The world
is vast and it is important to be open to all the dissimilarities in its different aspects, including
religion.

PK is as much a philosophy as a film. The movie is perfect for everyone because it

teaches important lessons regarding the differences in our culture, religion and belief and it also
discusses all types of error in religious sectors and leaders. It is an eye opener for those who have
little to no knowledge about how religion affects our way of living.
