COMPUTER SYSTEM

 Is a collection of entities (hardware, software and peopleware) that are designed to

receive, process, manage and present information in a meaningful format.

COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

 HARDWARE
 Are physical parts/ intangible parts of a computer.Input devices, output devices, central
processing unit and storage devices
 Example: Internal components include items such as the motherboard, central
processing unit (CPU), random access memory (RAM), hard drive, optical drive, heat
sink, power supply, transistors, chips, graphics processing unit (GPU), network
interface card (NIC) and Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports.
 External components, also called peripheral components, are those items that are
often connected to the computer in order to control either its input or
output. Common input components include a mouse, keyboard, microphone,
camera, touchpad, stylus, joystick, scanner, USB flash drive or memory
card. Monitors, printers, speakers, headphones
 SOFTWARE
 also known as programs or applications. They are classified into two classes namely -
sytem software and application software.
 Example: Microsoft Office
Adobe photoshop
Audacity
Inkscape
Visual studio
VLC media player
Jet audio
Picasa
Google chrome
Tally
 PEOPLEWARE
 Refers to the role people play in technology and the development of hardware or
software. Also known as the humanware. The user commands the computer system to
execute on instructions.
 Example: Computer Engineers, Software Engineers, Computer Technicians and Etc.

INTERNET AND NETIQUETTE

Netiquette - Netiquette is short for "Internet etiquette." Just like etiquette is a code of polite
behavior in society, netiquette is a code of good behavior on the Internet. This includes several
aspects of the Internet, such as email, social media, online chat, web forums, website comments,
multiplayer gaming, and other types of online communication.

10 BASIC RULES OF NETIQUETTE OR INTERNET ETIQUETTE

1. Remember That Real People Take Priority

2. If You Wouldn't Say It to Someone's Face, Don't Say It Online
3. If You Wouldn't Show It in Public, Don't Share It Online
4. Don't Exclude Your Audience
5. Don't "Friend" Then "Unfriend" People
6. Don't Overload System Resources With Enormous Files
7. Respect People's Privacy
8. Don't Repost Without Checking the Facts
9. Check and Respond to Email Promptly
10. Update Online Information That People Depend Upon

WINDOWS DESKTOP

 Windows Explorer Shortcut – Press and hold “Windows key” and press “E”

PARTS OF THE APPLICATION WINDOW

1. Desktop area- is where your Desktop icons and open programs appear. Here you can
open programs and folders by double-clicking on their icons.
2. Start button opens Start menu - with pinned items, recently added and/or most used
programs,
3. Quick Launch Bar / Quick Launch Toolbar - includes buttons to launch favorite
programs.
4. Taskbar - contains buttons/icons of running (currently open) programs/apps. You can
bring these to the front or minimize, maximize and close their windows here.
5. Notification area - includes icons of some running programs and important messages. It
also includes the current date or current time and date.
6. Desktop Icons – Is an application software that can be seen in the desktop area and has
it’s own logo.

MOUSE OPERATIONS

 CLICK -  is a term used to describe the action of pressing a mouse button (usually
the left mouse button, if the mouse has two buttons) one or more times.
 DRAG - describes the action of selecting an object or section of text and moving it,
usually to drop in an alternate area.
 POINT – Is when you drag the mouse and point it to one direction and it will stay
there.
 SELECTING – Is like pointing and clicking the app.
 MOUSE POINTER - A mouse cursor, also known as a mouse arrow, or mouse
pointer, is a graphical image that is used to activate or control certain elements in
a graphical user interface

NON-PRINTING CHARACTERS
Keyboard Special Keys

 ESC KEY -
A key on computer keyboards, usually labeled Esc. Pressing the Escape key usually canc
els or aborts the current operation.
 CONTROL KEY -
A Control key is a key which, when pressed in conjunction with another key, will perfor
m a special
operation. The result of keeping the control key pressed down while pressing another cha
racter, is a control
key combination , which can have different meanings depending on which program is run
ning.
 SHIFT KEY -
The shift key is a modifier key on a keyboard, used to type capital letters and other altern
ate "upper"
characters. There are typically two shift keys, on the left and right sides of the row below
the home row.
On an English keyboard, characters that typically require the use of the shift key include t
he parentheses, the question mark, the exclamation point, and the colon.
 ENTER KEY -
A key that moves the cursor (or insertion point) to the beginning of the next line, or retur
ns control to
whatever program is currently running. After a program requests information from you (b
y displaying a
prompt), it will usually not respond to your input until you have pressed the Enter or Retu
rn key. This
allows you to correct typing mistakes or to reconsider your entry before it is too late. In m
any applications,
pressing the Enter key moves the cursor to the next field. In graphical user interfaces, pre
ssing Enter activates the currently selected button or option.
 TAB KEY -
A key on computer keyboards that inserts a tab character or moves the insertion point to t
he next tab
stop. Some applications respond to the tab key by inserting spaces up to the next tab stop.
 INSERT KEY -
A key on computer keyboards that turns insert mode on and off. The Insert key does not
work for all
programs, but most word processors and text editors support it.  It is primarily used to sw
itch between the two text-
entering modes on a personal computer or word processor. The first is over type mode, in
which
the cursor, when typing, overwrites any text that is present on and after its current locatio
n. The other is
insert mode, where the cursor inserts a character at its current position, forcing all charact
ers past it one position further.      Insert Key
 DELETE KEY - On computer keyboards, the delete key
(sometimes shortened "Del"), should, during normal text  editing, discard the character
at the cursor's position, moving all following characters one position
"back" towards the freed place.
 SCROLLLOCK KEY -
The behavior of this toggle key depends on the particular software in use.  The scroll lock
key is intended to
temporarily stop the scrolling of text or halt the operation of a program. There are not ma
ny software programs today that take advantage or have a use for this key.
 NUMLOCK KEY -
A key that switches the numeric keypad from numeric mode to cursor control mode, and
vice versa. In
numeric mode, the keys represent numbers even when they are combined with the Shift k
ey, Function key, or
Control key. Otherwise these combinations may have different meanings.
The Num Lock key is a toggle key, meaning that it changes the current mode. If the nume
ric keypad is already  locked in numeric mode, pressing the Num Lock key releases it.
 CAPSLOCK KEY -
Pressing the Caps Lock key will set a keyboard mode in which typed letters are capitalize
d by default and
in lower case when the shift key is pressed; the keyboard remains in this mode until caps
lock is pressed  again.  This is also a toggle key
 PAUSE/BREAK KEY -
A keyboard key that is pressed to stop the execution of the current program or transmissi
on.
 PRTSCR KEY -
(Pronounced PRINT screen.) A keyboard key (on most standard keyboards) that, when pr
essed,  sends the information displayed on-
screen to the printer or to the Clipboard. The image then can be
printed or pasted from the Clipboard into a graphics program for manipulation and printin
g later.
