It is an Initiative of the Department of Tourism,
Government of Kerala.

Sargaalaya is a wonderful world of tradition in the form of finest handicrafts. This exquisite blend of tradition
with culture, With highly skilled artisans from over 20 traditional villages across the state of Kerala brought togeth-
er under one roof, the village builds a platform for their cultural and financial development. The art and craft prod-
ucts at Sargaalaya are not limited within Kerala however, the astonishing examples of exceptional skills range from
various states across the country. Besides getting familiar with many works of art that take expression on different
materials, visitors can satisfy themselves off the quality of the finished products.

Sargaalaya offers a live display of craftsmanship providing a close look at every aspect of manufacturing for art
and craft enthusiasts and even conducts workshops for people who desire to learn about it.

LOCATION & SITE

Set in 20 acres of land on the banks of the Moorad River, Vadakara, it has 27 exhibition Cottages which emplys more than 100
artisans. Apart from showcasing traditional handicrafts, there is also a Technology Development Center that provides training for
craftsmen and encourage them to comeup with new and innovative products.
CONCEPT OF RESPONSIBLE TOURISM :
Responssible toursim was introduced firstly in Cape Town, SA (2002). It aims at uplifting local communities through tourism. It
follows ,

• Environmental Responsibilty
ENTRANCE :

There is a ticket counter at the entrance and the prices are as follows :
• Adult ₹40 • Child ₹30
Visiting Hours :
10:00AM to 8:00PM.

• The entrance gateway is also made of security Kiosks on either sides.


• There is a CCTV surveilance booth at the entrance for monitoring all the activities across the site.

PARKING :
Parking is available for,
• 50 Four- wheelers,
• Two- wheelers. and is chargeable.
• The average footfall is 2000.
• No separet footpath for pedestrians.
• The road is 7M and is for two way movement.
• Street lights are also provided with CCTV installations.
• The site is surrounded by natural waterbodies and terrain.

• The Open Air Theatre can hold upto 200 people.

CRAFT COTTAGES :
• The total no.of craft cottages is 27.
• Each cottage is 5x3m.
• In some cases, the cottages are shared between two crafts.
• All the cottages are connected by open corridors.

• TYPICAL COTTAGE UNIT :

• The Artisans work overnight or the day times


in the workshop units behind the shops.
• All the crafting work is done in the workshop
itself.
• Some of these workshop units are combined
with the shop where the material is easy to work
with.

PLAN
BUILDING MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION :
• The complete project is built with exposed laterite blocks.
• Pitched roofs are found as it is the most prominent architectural element of the architecture in Kerala.
• These roofs are built with metal framework with Tin sheet on top to reduce heat inside the building.
• The Tin sheet is then covered by Terracotta Tiles on top.
• Some of the elements are plastered white to complement the colour of the bricks.

• The roof tops are also ventilated in traditional Kerala style to allow indirect natural lighting and ventilation.
• This is due to fact that the Climate of Kerala is highly humid.
OTHER AMENITIES :

• Academy building

• Students or artisans or anyone interested can enroll and training in crafting will be held thrice a year for 2
months.
• Visiting people or tourists can also be trained in a short period.
• The building also consists of a seminar hall in the ground floor and classrooms in the 1st floor.
• The other floors are for accomodation which consists of dormitories for paying guests.

EXHIBITION / SALES :

• There is a diplay hall or gallery where all the


craft arts of the village are displayed at one place
and sold
• There is a gift counter at the back for packing.
• The hall is massively ventilated.
• Cross ventilation is being used.
• Direct natural lighting is the main source of
light.
• Some of the larger pieces are exhibited in the
corridor under glass protection.
