Today I am overly happy to finally introduce myself to
everyone, I am Miss Florence Nightingale, a British nurse,
statistician, and social reformer of modern nursing. In 1840, I begged to my parents "to let me study mathematics instead of doing worsted work and practicing dance moves." My mother "did not approve because I have home duties that should not be neglected for mathematics." She assumed that my destiny was marriage, "and what use were mathematics to a married woman?" In the same way, my father also urged me to study more appropriate subjects for a woman, like "history and philosophy. But I expressed my preference for mathematics . I was quick to beg for my choice. Eventually my parents finally granted permission. Years later, my mathematical approach saved the British army at Scutari during the Crimean war and provided the data that led to hospital reforms. And that is why I am here standing in front of you to share with you this thoughts, “Be that dreamer you wish to be and stand up for it no matter what”. Thank you very much.
