PROBLEM NO 1
The sum of a two-digit number is 13. The
ones digit is 3 more than the tens digit.
What is the number?
SOLUTION:
X= tens digit
3+X= ones digit
3+x+x=15
2x/2=12/2
X=6

CHECK:
3+6+6=15
9+6=15
15=15
Ten digit=6, Ones digit=9
PROBLEM NO 2
Monica was 12 years older than Susan. The
sum of their ages is 34. What is Susan’s
age?
SOLUTION:
X=the age of Susan
X+12=the age of Monica
X+x+12=34
2x/2=22/2
X=11

Check:
11+11+12=34
34=34
Monica is 23 years old
Susan is 11 years old
PROBLEM NO 3
A rectangle has a perimeter of 48 cm. If the
length is 4 more than the width. Find the
dimensions?
SOLUTION:
X=Width
X+4=length
2(x+x+4)=48
4x/4=40/4
X=10

CHECK:
2(10+10+4)=48
2(24)=48
48=48
The width is 10 cm. and the length is 14 cm.
PROBLEM NO 4
Anna has $2000 more than Dianne. If the
sum of their money is $7300. What is the
amount of each girls?
SOLUTION:
X=Dianne’s money
X+2000=Anna’s money
X+x+2000=7300
2x/2=5300/2
X=$2650

CHECK:
2650+2650+2000=7300
$7300=$7300
Dianne has $2650
Anna has $4650
PROBLEM NO 5
The sum of two numbers is 52. The first
number is 14 more than the second
number. Find the two numbers
SOLUTION:
X=Second number
X+14=First number
X+x+14=52
2x/2=38/2
X=19

CHECK:
19+19+14=52
52=52
First number is 33
Second number is 19
PROBLEM NO 6
The sum of three numbers is 126. The third
number is 8 more than the first number. The
second number is 2 less than the first
number. What are the three numbers?

SOLUTION:
X=First number, X+8=Third number, X-2=Second number
X+(x+8)+(x-2)=126
3x/3=120/3
X=40

CHECK:
40+(40+8)+(40-2)=126
40+48+38=126
126=126
First number= 40, Second number= 38, Third number= 48
PROBLEM NO 7
Mike has a rectangular yard with a
perimeter of 96 cm. The length is 10 more
than the width. Find the width?
SOLUTION:
X=width
X+10=length
2(x+x+10)=96
4x/4=76/4
X=19

CHECK:
2(19+19+10)=96
2(48)=96
96=96
Length= 29, Width= 19
PROBLEM NO 8
The amount of the dress was $1200. If the
rate is 20%. Find the selling price?
SOLUTION:
X=(1200)-(0.2)(1200)
X=1200-240
X=$960

CHECK:
960=1200-(0.2)(1200)
960=1200-240
$960=$960
PROBLEM NO 9
A rectangular field has a perimeter of 144m.
If the length is twice than the width. Find
the dimensions?
SOLUTION:
X=Width
2X=Length
2(x+2x)=144
6x/6=144/6
X=24

CHECK:
2(24+(24)(2)=144
2(72)=144
144=144
Width= 24m. Length= 48m.
 PROBLEM NO 10
The sum of a two digit number is 12. The
tens digit is 4 less than the ones digit. What
is the number?

SOLUTION:
X=Ones
X-4=Tens
X+x-4=12
2x/2=16/2
X=8

CHECK:
8+8-4=12
12=12
Answer is 48
Tens digit=4, Ones digit=8
