1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This specification combines two Process Industry Practices (PIP) to address Selection &
Application Criteria for external coatings for aboveground plant facilities exposed to
weather and operating at temperatures less than 1000°F (538°). These two documents are
provided in support of Specification MQ-SP-M-4038, Painting.

1.2 Exceptions

This Specification is not applicable to architectural components and buildings.

2.0 PIP CTCE1000, External Coating System Selection Criteria

This document provides requirements for the selection of industrial coating systems,
identifies various industry standards and codes and defines the various environments that
influence the selection of coating systems.

CTCE1000-D1, Documentation Requirements, identifies the documents required for

selection of external coating systems.

CTCE1000-D2, Type Code Definitions, provides the generic coating descriptions for the
coating type codes listed in the Selection Criteria Sheet CTCE1000-D22.

CTCE1000-D22, Selection Criteria Sheet, identifies the various substrates, operating

temperatures and coating systems that are appropriate for a severe/seacoast environment.

3.0 PIP CTSE1000, Application of External Coatings

This document provides requirements for the application of industrial external coatings
and includes industry codes and standards, general guidelines on surfaces not requiring
coating, general surface preparation and application guidance, etc.

CTSE1000-D1 identifies Documentation Requirements for the application of external

coatings, including the specific coating systems as specified in Project Painting
Specification MQ-SP-M-4038.

CTSE1000-F provides a Daily Inspection Report form for the application of external
coatings.

Add to section 4.2.1.2:

j. Uninsulated stainless steel and alloys operating at 140°F (60°C) and below

Add to section 4.3.1 Preparation for Blasting:

4.3.1.6 Compressed air used for abrasive blasting shall be tested in accordance with ASTM
D4285 at the beginning of each shift, every four hours thereafter and after any
interruption of compressor operation.

4.3.1.7 Surfaces to be abrasive blasted shall be tested for soluble salt contamination in
accordance with section 5.0 of Painting Specification MQ-SP-M-4038.
