1. What do I want? (25 pts)


What is my objective in this scene/aria?
To convince Lucia to marry Arturo. I want the family to be happy, as they provide my salary, so
I advise Lucia to work for the good of her house.

2. What is in my way? (25 pts)


What are the obstacles to getting what you want?
Lucia doesn’t want Arturo, she’s promised herself to Edgardo. I would rather see love win out in
the end, but Enrico and the rest of the family would be greatly displeased if I were to tell Lucia
that.

3. List two examples from your roadmap and describe how you consciously use your body
language to emphasize a chosen strategies or a beat changes. (20 pts)
a. very beginning- I comfort Lucia by offering to take her hand, praying for her in my heart
b. “nel ciel sara” - imagine her name on a plaque in Heaven directly in front of us

4. List two examples from your roadmap and describe how you consciously use your diction
or a “musical device” to highlight your chosen strategy. (20 pts)
a. coda- I celebrate her agreeing with me by shouting “il pianto..” over and over
b. “nel ciel sara”- I reinforce my meaning and my confidence with a crescendo
