abundantly available and could

Every year, the Yayasan UEM
Scholarship Programme provides
the opportunity for deserving SPM
leavers to realise their dreams and
pursue their studies at foreign
universities. Besides covering
academic fees, the scholarship
provides additional support in
terms of various allowances to help
students ease their financial
burden as well as self-development
programmes.
Course Focus spoke to two
Yayasan UEM scholarship
beneficiaries, Elinar Yasmeen
Muhammad Azmi, who is currently
a corporate communications senior
executive at UEM Edgenta Berhad,
and Ang Jia Shun, who is studying
MEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering
at the University of Nottingham
Malaysia.
Q: How did you come to know
about Yayasan UEM scholarship?
Elinar: After SPM results were
out, all my friends were racing to
apply for scholarships. I saw an
advertisement for Yayasan UEM
scholarship in the newspaper and
decided to go for it.
Ang: I first came across the
Yayasan UEM scholarship through
a generic scholarship application
website. It was one of the few that
offer a full scholarship, covering
not only academic fees, but also
providing generous living
expenses. Upon more research, I
discovered that selected students
will have the privilege of studying
at a premier A-Levels college –
Kolej Yayasan UEM (KYUEM).
Q: What were the key
differences between the Yayasan
UEM scholarship and other
scholarships on the market?
Elinar: What appealed to me
was the opportunity to gain
A-Levels certification at KYUEM –
this includes the prospect of
studying Cambridge A-Levels
syllabus, access to experienced
teachers, and being able to focus on
my studies while remaining active
in various activities and
associations.

that I knew I was in good hands.
There was only a handful of
scholars chosen, and I believed that
because of the small number, the
attention given to each individual’s
excellence would be greater – and I
was right!
Yayasan UEM played a significant
role in helping me identify my
strengths and shape my career
path. One key difference of Yayasan
UEM lies in the Scholars
Development Programme – from
the moment we received the
scholarship, our individual growth
and development were synced. We
were never short of programmes
that helped us build our confidence
and prepare ourselves for the real
world.
Q: How would you describe
your student life without the
scholarship?
Ang: I cannot imagine what my
student life would have been
without the Yayasan UEM
scholarship. Before
being awarded the
scholarship, I always worried about
the financial burden on my family
if I were to pursue tertiary
education. It put my parents in a
difficult spot because they would
have needed to choose between
paying for my university education
or my siblings’. Because of the
financial restraints, I was
constantly distracted from my
academic studies and that, in turn,
resulted in more stress for myself.
Q: Please share about the bond
you currently have with Yayasan
UEM as part of the scholarship.
Was the bond a deterrent for you
when choosing the scholarship?
Elinar: My work bond with UEM
Group of Companies is for five
years, and this is my fifth year here.
I have been exposed to different
businesses under the group – PLUS
Malaysia Berhad, UEM Sunrise,
UEM Group and, presently, UEM
Edgenta. Some may view a bond as
a deterrent but I have always been
a believer in seizing opportunities
regardless of where you are placed.
In fact, I saw it as a form of job
security upon graduation.
Q: What are the career
opportunities open to you
because you are a Yayasan UEM
scholar?
Elinar: Part of the
requirement when I first
started working was that
I had to rotate between
the different
businesses within
UEM Group of
Companies on
an annual basis for the first three
years. I started at PLUS Malaysia
Berhad as an internal auditor,
before deciding to work in
corporate communications at UEM
Sunrise, UEM Group and UEM
Edgenta.
Yayasan UEM is supportive if
scholars want to do things
differently – I was an economics
major but after a year of working,
Yayasan UEM identified my skills
and personality to be more suited
in a communications role. I could
not agree more and have been in
this field since. Switching
disciplines is a rare opportunity
that would be unlikely with others
scholarship providers.
My experience rotating between
businesses presented me with the
chance to enrich my capabilities,
broaden my range of skills as well
as acquire in-depth knowledge
from supportive superiors and
mentors. It definitely forced me out
of my comfort zone, but it was
ultimately worth it because of the
amazing people I met and
connections I made along the way.
Q: What would you say are the
most valuable experiences you
have gained from being a
Yayasan UEM scholar?
Elinar: Nothing beats the overall
experience of meeting new people
locally and abroad. While I was
studying abroad, I loved trying
different things. I was part of the
Bristol University Ballroom and
Latin Dance Society, through which
I partook in inter-university
competitions and won Best
Beginner Dancer Award at the end
of my second year.
Now working and as an alumna
of KYUEM, I get to actively
contribute and give back to my
alma mater through activities and
discussions with the current

students, as well as by contributing
fresh ideas that can be injected into
the improvement of KYUEM.
Ang: My life took a 180° turn
after I was awarded the Yayasan
UEM scholarship. Not only was the
financial burden on my parents
lifted, I also became an exemplary
student who motivates my friends,
peers and siblings to work harder. I
have been able to focus fully on my
academics as well as areas of self-
improvement. Because of the
Yayasan UEM scholarship, I was
finally able to pursue my A-Levels
at KYUEM where I was continually
surrounded by diligent, determined
and dedicated peers who never
failed to inspire me to step out of
my comfort zone and step up my
game.
Q: Is there a strong bond
amongst Yayasan UEM scholars?
Elinar: Oh yes, very much so. We
keep in touch and celebrate each
other’s milestones in life (weddings,
babies and more!) and we’re
always there for each other
whenever we need help. I guess
this stems from what we’ve been
resonating with over the years –
the familial values of Yayasan UEM.
It is no surprise that we always find
our ways to each other in the end.
Ang: The scholars of Yayasan
UEM share a strong bond as we
connect to each other in many
ways while studying. Although we
may be enrolled in different
universities, we would still have
the chance to meet, bond and work
with one another via Yayasan UEM
Scholars Development Programme,
which ranges from indoor Speed
Reading and Super Memory
workshops to rigorous outdoor
activities such as jungle trekking
and white-water rafting. These
activities equipped the scholars
with important skills required for
work and study while bolstering
the camaraderie between staff and
scholars.

TUNKU Abdul Rahman University College
(TAR UC) understands Malaysians’ need for
pursuing quality education and has
endeavoured to make its holistic education
accessible to all through the provision of
various financial aid.
To date, there are 39 interest-free
revolving student loans that are funded by
philanthropic organisations, corporations,
alumni and individuals specifically to help
ease the financial burdens of TAR UC
students in need. One type of financial aid
offered for TAR UC students is the TAR UC
Student Loan Fund. Since inception in 1979,
more than 12,000 loan awards, amounting
close to RM 37.5 million, has been disbursed
through the TAR UC Student Loan Fund.
The loan
funds cover the entire tuition fees of each
student recipient.
Besides financial aid, TAR UC also
provides incentives such as the TAR UC
Sibling Discount offered for parents who
have two or more children studying in TAR
UC. Potential students whose sibling(s) are
current full-fee-paying TAR UC students in
the same semester will be given a RM1,000
discount for their first semester tuition fees.
Another attractive financial incentive by
TAR UC for deserving students is the TAR UC
Merit Scholarship. Established in 1997,
potential students who obtain excellent
results in their SPM, STPM or UEC will be
automatically offered the Merit Scholarship,
which covers up to 100% waiver of tuition
fee. In addition the latest form of
scholarship established by TAR UC in 2019 is
the TAR UC Sports Scholarship, intended for
students who have a good background in
sports.
In order to assist more underprivileged
students to pursue their tertiary education,
the institution partners with externally
administered funds such as The Star
Education Fund, Sin Chew Daily Education
Fund and Nanyang Tertiary Education
Fund. TAR UC collaborates with external
organisations to offer scholarships or
bursaries and also assists students in
applying for other external study grants

Among the many recipients is Li Zhi
Chung, from Tawau, Sabah, who could
pursue his Diploma in Quantity Surveying
upon receiving financial support from the
TARC – Lee Kwee Ann Student Loan. “It is a
dream come true to be able to study quantity
surveying at TAR UC because of TAR UC’s
high standing in the industry” he says.
Because of financial constraints, Li was
doubtful that he would have the
opportunity to study. “ I approached TAR
UC to see if I could get financial assistance
and am very thankful that TAR UC went

out of its way to help me to secure a
suitable student loan,” says Li. Li’s study
loan is amongst some of the interest-free
loans that TAR UC offers.
Another recipient of TAR UC’s Student
Loan, Devonna James Steward from Lundu,
Sarawak, is currently pursuing her
Bachelor of Business (Hons) in
International Business. Finding life
challenging where finances were
concerned, she approached TAR UC’s team,
which advised her to apply for the student
loan. “It was such a relief for me and my
family when my student loan application
was successful,” Devonna shares.
Kong Inn Foong, who is a recipient of
TAR UC’s Merit Scholarship, is currently
undertaking the Bachelor of Creative
Multimedia (Hons) programme. Kong
shares, “Being automatically offered a full
scholarship to study at TAR UC was a
confidence boost for me. It is also good
motivation for me to continue pushing
myself to further improve my grades,”

Widening access to
quality STEM education
IN the wake of the Fourth Industrial
Revolution, demand for professionals in
science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) areas, in particular, has
been on the rise. Recognising this, Heriot-
Watt University is dedicated to supporting
growing industry needs by nurturing a
competent pool of industry-relevant, future-
ready graduates in these fields.
Established in 1821, Heriot-Watt was the
first Mechanics’ Institute in the world and
the first in Scotland to enrol women into
STEM programmes. It is also highly sought-

In a bid to widen Malaysians’ access to

Changing
the hangover
cure game
ALCOHOL consumption is an
ancient tradition that has
formed an integral part of 21st
century living. For instance,
archaeologists have dated proof
of alcohol consumption to as
early as the Neolithic age.
Göbekli Tepe, an archaeological
site in Turkey, is reportedly
more than 12,000 years old and
hosts evidence of beer
production at ancient feasting
sites. It is clear that alcohol is a
staple across many cultures, and
each nation is robustly proud of
its distinct alcoholic beverage.
Down the rabbit hole
Indulging in alcoholic
beverages can make even the
most inhibited person a spirited
soul. Still, apart from breaking
down inhibitions, alcohol
changes how we feel as it
increases the release of
dopamine (a neurotransmitter
that plays a role in pleasure,
motivation and learning) in the
brain’s reward centre, further
adding to its appeal.
However, cautionary tales
remind us that too much of a
good thing can be bad. Moderate
consumption of alcohol may
leave you feeling a little more
boisterous and confident than
usual, but excessive drinking
leads to an impairment in
psychomotor skills and loss of
inhibition. Individuals in this
state may say or do things they
ordinarily would not.
Despite being widely available
and legal across many countries,
excessive alcohol consumption
paves the way for veisalgia
(medical term for a hangover).
Hangovers occur when one’s
blood alcohol content
approaches zero. Individuals
will notice mental and physical
symptoms such as a pounding
headache, fatigue and an
inability to concentrate, typically
in the morning after a night of
heavy drinking. While they
eventually go away on their
own, hangovers can last up to 24
hours, in which time they can
affect the productivity of
working individuals.
“Numerous studies
show that alcohol and
drug use contribute to

workplace accidents,
absenteeism and medical and
compensation claims,” says Dr
Nagashekhara Molugulu, lecturer
at Monash University Malaysia’s
School of Pharmacy. Researchers
add that other effects include
memory loss and poor attention,
as well as impairment in speed
and coordination.
Tapping into nature’s
bounty
Hangover remedies have been
around for ages, many with
dubious origins. However, with
drinking being woven so tightly
into the fabric of society, even in
Malaysia, the importance of
hangover remedies takes centre
stage.
To prevent or treat hangovers,
Hangaway Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian
company founded by Monash
alumni and registered
pharmacist Marcus Chew, has
been working with Monash
Malaysia’s School of Pharmacy to
develop a hangover remedy.
The product is made from
natural ingredients and was
initially manufactured in
powdered form by Dr Molugulu.
He then collaborated with School
of Pharmacy head Prof Gan Siew
Hua and School of Pharmacy
senior lecturer Dr Nafees
Ahemad to develop a liquid
version of the product.
“This beverage is a herbal
product with no side effects. As
the liver plays a vital role in
breaking down alcohol before
transporting it to the kidneys to
be flushed out, safeguarding
liver function becomes crucial.
Hangaway contains protective
ingredients for the liver based on
a formulation that has been used
for more than 50 years. At the
same time, we (the team)
enhanced the solubility and
organoleptic properties of the
formulation,” explains Molugulu.
When alcohol is consumed, it
is metabolised into acetaldehyde,
a compound that is toxic at high
levels. One 60ml dosage of
Hangaway is enough
to breakdown
acetaldehyde for a
moderate amount of
alcohol consumed.

WHEN HELP University organised
its inaugural convocation for
diploma students last year, it
proved to be a momentous
occasion for those who graduated
as it adopted many of the
traditions from the grand April
convocations held annually at
Shangri-La Hotel for
undergraduate and postgraduate
students.
School-leavers can join these
diploma programmes immediately
after graduation. HELP University
offers diploma programmes in
information technology, business,
early childhood education,
communication, business
management and accounting.
These two-year diploma
programmes are popular with
many students, as they can either
choose to join the workforce
immediately after completion, or
continue their undergraduate
studies at HELP.

Technology, says, “We are

PDTU status, which is a testimony

our IT programmes. Our Diploma
in IT is a popular programme
recognised by top international
universities. Students can progress
to the University of Queensland,
University of Technology Sydney,
Australian National University or
Beijing Jiaotong University to
complete their degrees.”
Prof Datuk Dr Paul Chan, vice-
chancellor of HELP University, in
his address at the inaugural
convocation said that in Malaysian
higher education, diploma and
foundation programmes offer
school-leavers an innovative
and challenging pathway to
higher education. The pathway
helps students mature under
professional and academic
guidance and mentoring so that
they may excel at the tertiary
level.
Thus, in celebration of the
achievements of its diploma
students who continue to excel,
the graduates with the highest
grades were recognised for their
achievements by being selected
for the President’s Award, which
entitled them to cash prizes.
It was indeed a proud
moment for Denise Lim as she
stood at the podium with tears
in her eyes, the recipient of the
HELP President’s Award for
excellent grades, scoring a CGPA
of 3.94 in her Diploma in
Communication studies. She felt
elated with the accolade.
During her speech, Denise
shared, “I want to start with a
short story about myself. I have
never been a bright student; I
was always talkative and
outgoing, but never really
bright. I was that kid in class
who was slow and constantly in
a blur. Because I knew I had a
disability of being slow, I used it
as an excuse in life. Whenever I
did badly, I would blame it on
my disability. It all stopped the
day I got my UEC results as it
was the day I faced failure. I
was rejected by as many as 10
universities. Fortunately, HELP
accepted me and even granted
me financial aid throughout the
first year of my Diploma in
Communication.”
From a student who had only
passed one subject at UEC level,
Denise worked hard in her
diploma studies, asked her
lecturers questions and made
sure her assignments were done
well. It all paid off when she

Ong Dong Hong, who just
completed the Diploma in
Business programme with a
3.5 CGPA, hopes to join the
Bachelor of Business
programme in the upcoming
March intake, majoring in
marketing, finance and
international business.
Coming from a humble
background, Ong confessed to
having a poor command of
English when he joined the
diploma programme, but sheer
ambition forced him to master
the language.
“I had to cover a total of 22
subjects over two years and
work very hard, but my desire
to complete the programme well
ensured my success,” says Ong.
As Ong was a state basketball
player, he managed to secure a
partial scholarship for his
Diploma in Business and during
his studies, he worked at a small
accommodation business to
partially fund himself.
Today, Ong has successfully
completed his diploma and
awaits entry into the HELP
business degree programme. At
the same time, Ong has
developed his own online
application for property
management and hopes, upon
completion of his degree, to run
his own property management
business.

Being granted Recognised
Teaching Centre status by
the University of London,
AeU is committed to
develop excellence in
respect to teaching,
support to students and
administrative processes.
This IFP is offered in full-time
and part-time study modes at
AeU. Flexible and multiple exits
pathways are also available.
Currently, AeU is offering pre-
IFP classes before the official
IFP begins in April. According
to Swa Lee Lee, AeU’s IPF
programme coordinator, “The
pre-IFP serves as a bridge to our
IFP where prospective students
are enhanced with life-long
learning skills. So far, the
feedbacks are positive, and the
students enjoy our pre-IFP
classes.”
When asked about her
experience of joining AeU’s pre-
IFP, Nur Dania Aqhtar Ahmad
Tarmizi, 18, shares, “I am very
excited for the opportunity
to join the pre-IFP as this is
my first campus learning
experience. I enjoy attending
the classes and among my
favourite subjects is

learn on how to deal with the
complexity of issues, people,
and the society.”
