Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

Dear Students and Parents / Guardians,

Welcome to the Cambridge School of Bucharest (CSB), and thank you for selecting our
school. It is our special privilege to work with families to provide an outstanding
educational experience for all of our students.

We work collaboratively every day to ensure students have the opportunity to excel in a
safe and positive learning environment!

We know that school is a time when both the students and their families embark on one
of the most important and exciting of life’s journeys. We want you to know that we are
here to assist you along the way. Students change daily – in every way imaginable –
physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually! What a thrill it is for us to be involved
in the exciting adventure of childhood and early adolescent development.

To help you “put the pieces together,” we have created this Parent-Student Handbook,
which is designed to help everyone involved learn more about our school, especially new
CSB students. We understand that when students go to school, parents and other family
members have to make their own adjustments to the process and that they may benefit
from having answers to key questions and clarifications about what to expect.

Our hope is that this Handbook will provide answers to most of the questions you might
have about the learning process and our school. You may also find it helpful to look at our
website at www.cambridgeschool.ro.

It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year! We look forward to a
year that is highlighted with special achievements and great memories for every student!

Respectfully,

Rita Maalouf
Director

Educational System

REGULAR ASSESSMENT

The SABIS® testing systems allows for accurate, timely, and effective detection of learning
gaps. Tests are developed by regional subject coordinators who, in addition to the school-
based academic staff, closely follow-up on the students’ results through various reports.
The timely and targeted follow-up ensures that gaps are filled and that students have the
required knowledge.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
Diagnostics tests in English and Math are administrated before the beginning of the
academic year in order to place new students in the right level. Diagnostic tests are also
administrated at the beginning of every term to all students to ensure that all gaps have
been dealt with.

SABIS ACADEMIC MONITORING SYSTEMS® (SABIS® AMS)

The SABIS Academic Monitoring System® (SABIS® AMS) are objective, criterion-
referenced, computer marked tests that are administrated on a weekly basis. They are
designed to check student learning, mastery, and long-term retention. Test items are
intended to evaluate weekly concepts and mostly focus on factual information. SABIS®
AMS used in Level E assesses math skills and in Level F and above assesses English
language, mathematics, and science in addition to other specific subjects.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TEST (CAT) AND PERIODIC EXAMS

These exams assess multi-concept thinking and are administrated periodically throughout
the term. CAT exams are given for Levels A to F twice per term. All subjects are covered in
one week of testing. Periodic Exams are for Level G and above and they cover different
subjects each week. In general, there are two Periodic Exams per week. Two written
exams are given per term in each subject area. The exams include objective questions for
a quick check of the material taught, as well as short, essay-type questions, which require
higher thinking skills and writing abilities.

6
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

END-OF-TERM EXAMS AND FINAL EXAMS

End-of-Term Exams are administered at the end of the terms 1 and 2 to determine
mastery of concepts taught over a full term. The End-of-Term Exams for term 3 are called
Final Exams and are comprehensive exams that measure student achievement over the
course of the entire academic year. Students in Level D and above are provided with study
lists and timetables prior to these Final Exams. Note that End-of-Term Exams and Final
Exams are not sent home.

STUDY GUIDE FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

DIARY
Starting in Level G, students are supposed to enter all the information concerning what
has been covered in class and what is to be done as homework in a specially designed
school diary. All students, starting in Level D must have school diaries, which can be
bought from the school bookshop. The items to be entered for each lesson are: the
subject taught, the material covered, the assigned homework, and the date the
assignment is due. Parents can assist by checking that the homework is done and that the
material covered in class is properly revised.

HOMEWORK
At CSB, homework is an essential part of the curricula. Starting in Term 3 in Level F and
onwards, students will spend time outside the class reviewing and reinforcing concepts
taught in class. Homework is not an opportunity to learn new material; however, the extra
practice that homework provides is a necessary part of the learning process.

Level F and below

In Level F and below, it is not a practice to assign homework. It is recommended, though,
that parents find time to read with their child(ren) for 10 to 15 minutes each day.

Level G and H
Students in the upper Primary School have 15 minutes of homework per subject each day.

Level I to O
Students in Levels I to K should expect 20 minutes of homework per assigned subject each
day. In Levels L to O, the amount of homework increases.

7
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

POLICY FOR SENDING BOOKS HOME

Levels A and B: All books are to be kept at school. They will be sent home when completed.

Level C: Books are kept at school, except for the reading books, which are sent home
daily. All other books will be sent home only when completed.

Level D and F: Books are kept at school, except for the reading books, which are sent
home daily. A study list, along with the books, will be sent home one week prior to the
CAT and Final Exams. The books that are sent home must be returned to the school daily.

Level G and above: Books are sent home with students. Children have a diary in which
they write exactly what has been covered in class and the assigned homework. A study list
of the material covered is sent home before the CAT and Final Exams.

Kindly note that for the younger children, our policy regarding sending books home stems
from our belief that academic targets can be reached by restricting learning to the school
hours. Extending the school day beyond that will eventually have a negative effect on
both children and parents. We recommend that parents encourage kids to read on a daily
basis.

Parents who would like books to be sent home daily must inform the School
Administration in writing before their request is granted.

STUDY HABITS

It is strongly recommended that parents help their children in applying the procedures
outlined below, and keep following up until these procedures become daily habits.

WHERE TO STUDY
• Preferably in a quiet room, away from the telephone, TV, or other distractions.
• A flat surface is needed (table, desk) and a straight chair, with a strong source of light.
Never study while relaxing on a comfortable sofa or while lying on a bed.

8
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

WHEN TO STUDY
Develop a reasonable study timetable. Several checks on various assignments are better
than one “long” check at the end.
• Specify the Starting Time and the Rest Times: These times should be reasonable;
consult with your parents and stick to the set timetable. You may want to work for an
hour, have a 15 minutes break, work for another hour, and then have dinner.
• Plan the weekend: The weekend should be used to revise the SABIS® AMS for the
following week and Basic Questions covered during the previous week. You should
also find time to prepare for the Periodic Exams of the following week. Plan your
weekend so that you may have time for both study and relaxation.

WHAT TO STUDY
What to Study on Weekdays: The best time to complete an assignment is when it is still
fresh in one’s mind, i.e., on the same day one has been taught the material. Students who
postpone their work place themselves under unnecessary pressure.

What to Study during the Weekends:

• SABIS® AMS: revise for the first SABIS® AMS of the following week. You have already
revised for it regularly the previous week, so this should not take more than 15 to 30
minutes. Do the same for each of the SABIS® AMS exams of the following week.
• Basic Questions for Periodic Exams: Check what Periodic Exams you have for the
following week. First revised the Basic Questions. You have already answered them in
the previous week, so this should not take more than 30 minutes per exam. Make sure
you can answer each question perfectly well without hesitation. Remember that
Periodic Exams also include questions other than the Basic Questions, so prepare for
these Periodic Exams aiming for a thorough understanding of the material taught.
• Homework: Complete any assigned homework for the first day of the following week.

What to Study the Night before Periodic Exams: Every week, students in Levels G to O
have two Periodic Exams. The night before the exam should be allocated for brief
revision, and not for studying the night before the exam. When relaxed and alert, your
exam performance will improve.

HOW TO STUDY
All students are advised to proceed as follows:
• Make sure that your study tools are available with you: diary, class work copybooks,
Sample Questions, Basic Questions, and books.

9
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

• Open your diary and look at the first lesson of the day. Review the points that the
teacher taught during the day; solve the Sample Questions related to every point and
refer to your class work teacher copybook. In case you have any difficulty, when
solving the related questions, seek the assistance of your teacher and/or subject
prefect to answer your queries.
• Answer the related Basic Questions.
• Complete the assigned Homework.
• Repeat the above procedure.
• For English and other Language(s): Read the assigned pages of the reader thoroughly,
then study the vocabulary, spelling, and grammar at least twice.
• For Social Studies: Study the assigned pages thoroughly.
• Review SABIS® AMS material regularly. The night before a SABIS® AMS test, revise the
Sample Questions for the last time. This will increase your chances of retaining the
knowledge.

PROMOTION AND RETENTION POLICY

While all subjects are important, some are given more academic weight than others in the
marking systems. Neither the total average of a student nor the average of a single
subject with several sub-subjects can be obtained by simply taking a straight average.
Different subjects are given different coefficients; different sub-subjects within a single
subject are given different weights. The averages and reports are not produced by the
teacher but by the Administration (with the help of the school’s computerized SABIS®
Student Management System software). Computer-generated report cards are sent home
at the end of each term, 3 times a year. These reports are very important because they
contain essential information about the students’ progress, together with any comments
to the parents or action to be taken by them. The Final Report gives essential promotion
information. Parents who want to discuss the report cards with staff members need to
make appointments through the School Administration.
Students are promoted only when they meet the promotion requirements set by the
school. A student who does not achieve these performance levels or higher, and who
cannot demonstrate full mastery of all essential concepts in these core subjects may be
required to sit for a retake exam in August. Sometimes, the student may need to repeat
the entire grade level the next year, provided that the student does not exceed the age
limit for that grade in which case an administrative decision will be taken for every
individual case regarding the student’s best option.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

SCHOOL HOURS

From the Kindergarten to Grade 8, classes are held from 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Note: For the High School (Grades 9-12) classes end at 4:00 p.m. as there are 8 classes
per day here instead of 7.

LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL

All students must be in school before 8:15 a.m. Parents transporting students in the
morning by car must drop off outside the school gate and not drive inside the yard, for
the safety of our students. Students are expected to be in school and in each class as
scheduled.

All students arriving late to school must check-in at the secretary’s office. Students
arriving late to school because of school buses arriving after 8:30 a.m. (in case of
unexpected traffic blocks) are to go directly to class. A general announcement will be
made to notify teachers of the bus’s late arrival.

Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. by private transport should sign in at the secretary’s
office, obtain an entry pass, and go to class. Students will not be admitted late to class
without first securing a pass from the secretary’s office.

If students have a written excuse from parents/guardians, or if we have received a phone

call explaining their late arrival, they will be given an excused entry pass. If they arrive
late, without an acceptable excuse, they will be given an unexcused entry pass.

Students who are repeatedly late with no valid excuse may be stopped from entering
class.

MEDICAL ISSUES AND ILLNESS AT SCHOOL

The school must be kept updated about any medical conditions.

A student who becomes ill at school must report to the School Nurse. Parents will be
contacted to arrange for the student to be collected as soon as possible.
In case the student is under medical treatment and we have the parent's consent to
administer the medicine in the school's medical office, it shall only be done if we are given
a photocopy of the doctor's prescription, especially if we have to administer antibiotics.

11
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

In case of fever, abdominal pain, flu, or allergies the school's medical office needs the
parent's approval by signing the consent form on the school’s website
www.webschool.sabis.net. This will allow the nurse to administer medicine such as non-
inflammatory, anti-pyretic, antispasmodic, or antihistamine medicine.

An Epidemiologic notice is required every summer, winter, and spring vacation.

In the case of Scarlet Fever – hemolytic streptococcal beta carrier confirmed by the
transmittable disease hospital – the student shall not resume school without a swab for
microbiological analysis of the larynx and an epidemiological notice.

In the case of head lice, the student will be immediately sent home for three days. The
day the student returns to school, he/she has the responsibility to stop by the school
medical office for a check-up. These three days shall be considered absence with leave.
Students absent from a periodic exam cannot attend classes on that day.

LEAVING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY

CSB operates a closed campus for all students, with the exception of approved privileges
for Grade 12 students. Students may leave the campus in case of an emergency or for
medical reasons. To release a student during the day, only parents should either phone or
send a note to the Receptionist who will notify the administrators as appropriate. The
student should be picked up by a parent or guardian.

ATTENDANCE

Student attendance is recorded daily and should a student be absent without prior
arrangement, parents/guardians will be contacted by the administration. Students must
attend school according to the school calendar. If a student is constantly absent without
valid reasons, they will not be accepted for the next academic year. Special circumstances
such as illness may be considered by the administration. However, the final decision is at
the discretion of the Director.

POLICIES AND INFORMATION

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN

Safeguarding children - the action we take to promote the welfare of children and protect
them from harm - is everyone’s responsibility. Anyone who comes into contact with
children and families has a role to play.

Children include everyone under the age of 18. Cambridge School of Bucharest believes
that every student, regardless of age, has the right to feel safe and protected from any
situation or practice that might result in physical or psychological damage. This includes
any form of bullying.

Cambridge School of Bucharest recognises its legal and moral duty to promote the well-
being of our students, protect them from harm, and to respond to child abuse. We
acknowledge our responsibilities to both protect students from maltreatment and
prevent impairment. We will promote their welfare by creating opportunities for them to
achieve their full potential, thus giving them optimum life chances in adulthood. Further
information can be found in the Safeguarding Children Policy on the school’s website.

CHEATING

In situations where a teacher has determined that a student has cheated during an
assignment, quiz, or exam, a zero will be recorded for the assignment or test. For a second
offence, a more severe consequence will be applied. The minimum punishment for
cheating, attempted cheating, or for assisting someone to cheat is being reported in the
student’s record, with the possibility of it being included in every future document that
the school may issue for the student when transferring to university or to another school.

PARENT MEETINGS

We have a different approach from most schools. Parents do not normally have meetings
with teachers to follow up on their child’s progress or performance. When parents have a
concern, a problem, or wish to seek information about their child, they meet with the
person designated by the administration for that purpose. This person has a complete
overall picture of the child’s academic and non-academic record and should be able to
give the parents the information needed. We consider this approach to be more efficient
and effective and avoid the possibility of confrontation and misunderstanding.
13
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

SEATING PLANS AND SECTIONS

Students are placed in sections and assigned seats according to their academic needs.
Changes of seating and sections are done by the Administration when it considers being in
the best interest of the student.

PRESENTS AND BIRTHDAYS

Students and parents are requested not to bring presents to the teachers/staff members
for any occasions. Students Level D and above are not allowed to celebrate their birthdays
at school.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS AND STUDENT

DISCIPLINE
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES AND CONSEQUENCES

• Long Break Detentions

Breaking any of the classroom rules results in a long break detention.

• After-School Detentions

A. Students may receive an after-school detention if they have been sent out of
class. Supervisors are to make sure that the student was sent out because

1 – They have disrespected the teacher.

2 – Their presence in class is preventing others from learning.
Only then do we call the parents and authorize after-school detention (the same
day if possible).

B. Students who fail to show up for the Long Break Detentions are also given an after-
school detention, but only after the parents are contacted.

14
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

• Weekend Detentions (2 to 4 hours on Saturday morning, depending on the

infraction)

• No homework or no book Offence

Grades 4 to 8: 1st time offenders are warned (a warning for each student
involved)
2nd time offenders – parents are called by AQC
3rd time offenders – break detention and parents contacted
4th time offenders – after-school detention

Grades 9 to 12: Students who do not do their homework on time will report to a
classroom on that day and do the homework under the supervision of the AQC.

• Report Book Procedure

Students who receive too many detentions and are showing no sign of improvement are
issued a Report Book. The student will obtain the signature of the teachers of every
period in the day and take the Report Book to the Supervisor at the end of the day. For
every period that is not signed, the student stays after school for an extra 45 minutes that
same day. The infraction will be written on the discipline sheet so that they are entered
into the system. The rule of Saturday Detention for frequent offences also applies to
those with Report Books.
Parents will be contacted as soon as we know a student will be staying after school due to
missing teacher signatures so that they are aware of the late pickup time.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES

The following list of behavioral expectations is not exhaustive. Consequences for

violations will be determined based upon the behavior and in the best interest of the
school and/or the student(s) involved to help improve discipline. Consequences for
inappropriate behavior may include parent contact, detention, or suspension.

• Respect – Students are expected to respect themselves, other people, school property,
and the property of others. Students should address and treat peers and Faculty members
in an appropriate manner at all times.

• Offensive Language – Students are expected to respect others by not using obscene or
inappropriate language. Bad language will not be tolerated.

15
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

• Public Displays of Affection – Respect for younger students, classmates, parents, and
other adults should be shown properly. Holding hands, walking arm in arm, or public
displays of affection are not appropriate.

• Theft – Students should not take or conceal property that belongs to another without
their permission.

• Vandalism – Students should not cause damage to school property or the property of
others. When the individual causing vandalism is identified, that student will be charged
for damages. This includes writing or drawing on desks, chairs, and walls.

• Fighting – Students should refrain from engaging in fights or causing harm to another
person.

• Bullying – Students should refrain from bullying behaviors which may include: name-
calling, taunting, threatening, mocking, making offensive comments, kicking, hitting,
punching, taking and/or damaging belongings, gossiping, excluding people from groups, or
spreading rumors. Please see the bullying policy/student complaint form on the school’s
website for further details.

• Possessing Dangerous Objects - Students should not bring any objects to school that
pose a risk to themselves or to others. The Administration will determine whether or not
an object is dangerous. Such dangerous objects include any size of penknife, sporting
knife, or laser pens.

• Smoking and other bad habits – The possession or use of tobacco or tobacco products,
alcohol, or other drugs are prohibited. Students are strictly forbidden to smoke, both
inside and in front of the school. Playing cards are not allowed on the school premises.

• Food, Drink, and Chewing Gum – Two breaks allow for snack times each school day.
Food and drink must not be consumed during class time except in exceptional
circumstances to be determined by the teacher. Chewing gum is strictly forbidden on the
school campus.

• Wheeled Transportation – Skateboards, roller blades, or scooters are not permitted on

school premises.

16
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

FOOD SERVICES

For students of levels A till G the School caterers offer facilities for a hot meal service for
lunch time, as well as a cafeteria for snacks during breaks. Parents can subscribe to the
hot meal service at the school accounts office. Levels A to C are not allowed to bring
money to the school and may not buy from the cafeteria.
Students of levels H till O have a cafeteria for snacks during breaks as well. Students who
do not wish to use the cafeteria services may not order food from outside vendors.

DRESS CODE

Students must wear a uniform consisting of a plain white shirt and grey trousers for boys
and a plain white shirt and grey skirt/trousers for girls. An additional grey vest and
pullover are required. A navy blue zipped jacket is required in a cold weather. The
standard school-produced uniform is compulsory for all students. This includes the P.E.
kit. The uniform track suit and black trainers may be worn on P.E. days. Any sweater that
is not related to the school uniform will be confiscated by the AQC or supervisor.
In addition, students should maintain a modest, neat and clean appearance at all times.

Boys should always have a neat and classic haircut and be cleanly shaven.

Girls may not wear make-up or nail polish. No high-heeled shoes are allowed. Girls must
wear their hair away from the face. Rings, necklaces, and long earrings are not allowed.

MOBILE PHONES USAGE

Mobile phones and electronic devices are not allowed in school. Mobile phones will be
confiscated. Any required contact with parents during school day should be made through
the school secretary. Any other contact with parents during the school time by children
will also result in the mobile phones being confiscated and a detention given.

SCHOOL BUS REGULATIONS

Bus transportation is provided for CSB students. Only students who are registered to ride
the school bus throughout the school year may do so. Routes are established by the
administrators and officials of the bus company. There are designated pick-up and drop-
off points. Drivers are authorized to stop at official points only. Buses depart from the
campus at about 3:10 p.m. each day. If there are any problems or concerns, please
contact the bus coordinator. Students who do not regularly ride a bus may not join a
friend on the bus.

17
Cambridge School of Bucharest
Parent - Student Handbook 2016-2017

Students who do not cooperate or conduct themselves in a manner conducive to the

safety of themselves or others while on the school bus, may be suspended from bus
transportation for 1-3 days, during which time the parent/guardian will be responsible for
the transportation of the student. If the infractions are repeated, the student may be
suspended from the bus transportation for the whole year.

• School Bus Monitors

Responsible High School students are assigned bus monitor duties on each bus to enforce
safety regulations. All students are expected to follow the safety directions of the bus
driver and student monitor.

• School Bus Conduct Regulations

1. Students will:
a. Enter and leave the bus in an orderly, quiet, considerate manner and will not interfere
with the normal passage of other students.
b. Be seated upon entering the bus and remain seated using seat belts until it is time for
them to depart the bus.
c. Obey requests of the driver regarding their safety and the orderly operation of the bus.
d. Be polite and courteous to the driver and other students.

2. All school rules apply and, in addition, students will NOT:

a. Project any part of the body or objects through the windows of the bus.
b. Throw or shoot any objects or items on the bus.
c. Interfere with the normal comfort of any other passenger.
d. Willfully damage the school bus or property of the passengers.
e. Use foul language or obscene gestures while on the bus.
g. Wrestle, fight, push, strike, or threaten another person, or engage in horseplay while on
the bus.
h. Sit in the driver’s seat or adjust any controls of the bus.
i. Eat or drink on the bus.
j. Stand or kneel on bus seats or walk in the aisle of the school bus when the bus is
moving.
k. Argue with or distract the bus driver while on the school bus (particularly when the
school bus is moving).

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

• On- Campus After School Activities

Extra-curricular activities take place outside of the normal school day or classroom.
Activities offered may vary from year to year. Some activities depend on having sufficient
numbers. Once all the activities are established, a list will be sent home. No student can
choose more than two activities per week. Activities run from 15:15-16:30.

• Off-Campus Activities Regulation

Students who are participating in a school activity or under the jurisdiction of the school
must travel with a school approved chaperone. School rules apply during any extra-
curricular or off campus activity.

The school recognizes the need for proper communication between and among students,
parents, teachers, and the administration. To assist in achieving this objective, the
following general procedures are recommended for all concerned.
Complaints or concerns can be made through the report form located on the web school,
at www.webschool.sabis.net and sent to the office.
When the problem concerns your son or daughter and his/her work in school, the best
person to see is the AQC for your child’s grade. Please phone 021-2102131/8 to make an
appointment.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Parents are asked to promptly report changes of residence, mailing address or telephone
number.

BEHAVIORAL AGREEMENT

This is to certify that we have read the Handbook that has outlined the school’s
expectations, disciplinary rules, and any consequences and/or punishments that may arise
if infractions occur.

We acknowledge that other school rules and guidelines exist and are not limited by this

We accept that various forms of punishments decided by the School Administration can
and will be judged on individual cases and that one punishment for one student or
