EVELYN DEL REY IS MOVING AWAY

A Note from Newbery Medalist Meg Medina
A first friend is someone we don’t ever forget.

A girl named Evelyn was the first friend I ever had. She
lived in an apartment next door to one of my cousins, and
I assume that’s how we must have met. For Evelyn and me,
friendship was as simple as playing at each other’s houses
on a Saturday morning after cartoons. It was helping her
mother, Sara, decorate a cake she had baked just for us. It
was playing hide-and-seek around plastic-covered furniture
and combing our dolls’ hair. It was having a friend who had a
twin bed in the corner of her living room, too. And it was the
fact that our mothers could talk to each other, two Cuban

women who had suddenly found themselves building a new
life in New York.

When I wrote Evelyn Del Rey Is Moving Away, I was thinking

about the simple and true way we love people when we are
children. I wanted to celebrate the lasting seed that a good
early friend plants inside of us. Most of us aren’t lucky to
keep our childhood friends with us forever, but I think we
never forget those early joys, no matter how brief they are
or how far we roam from them later.
