1. a. Derive a Terzaghi’s method of determining bearing capacity of soil. [6]
b. A building owner has planned to construct his house with framed structure with square columns at a depth of
1.5m below the ground. If the column has to carry a load of 800kN. Determine the size of the footing required
to transfer the load to soil strata with cohesion 10 kN/m2, angle of internal friction 30 degree and unit weight of
20kN/m3. Use a factor of safety as 3. Take Terzaghi’s bearing capacity factors Nc=37.2, Nq=22.5 and Nr=19.7
respectively. [5]
2. Write down the concept of compensated foundation. Describe with the sketches the various types of mat foundation.
[1+5]
3. A group pile of 9 piles 300mm in diameter is driven in a square grid with the lines at 900mm/cc. The piles are cast
in site and are 10m long. The unconfined compressive strength of the clay is 70kN/m2. Compute the allowable load
on the pile group. On the basis of shear failure criteria for a factor of safety 2.5. Take adhesion factor 1. [5]
4. What are the advantages of well foundations over the other types of deep foundation? Explain about the methods
used to rectify tilt and shift of the well foundation with clear sketches. [2+4]
5. Write down the different method of soil improvement techniques. [2]

6. a. What are the implications of settlement one structures? Write down the steps of proportioning footings for uniform
settlement. [2+4]
b. A building has to be supported on a RC raft foundation of dimensions 14mx21m. The sub-soil is clay which has an
average unconfined compressive strength of 15kN/m2. The pressure on the soil due to the weight of the building
and the loads that it will carry, will be 140 kN/m2 at the base of the raft. If the unit weight of the excavated soil is
19.5 kN/m3, at what depth should the bottom of raft be placed to provide a factor of safety of 3 against shear
failure? [5]
7. What is the mat foundation and how is the bearing capacity of mat foundation calculated in case of the cohesive soil?
[1+5]
8. Design a friction pile group to carry a load of 3000kN including the weight of pile cap at a site where the soil is uniform
clay to a depth of 20m underlain by rock. Average unconfined compressive strength of clay is 70kN/m2. Take factor
of safety 3 and adhesion factor 0.4. [5]
9. What is the best suitability of well foundation? Showing the clear sketch, explain about different components of well
foundation. [2+4]
10. Mention the advantage of preloading and at which condition do you referred. [2]
