DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS FOR SCIENTISTS AND

ENGINEERS
Lecture Notes in ES 3: Differential Equations

INTRODUCTION
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS ARE AMONG THE ESSENTIALS OF MODERN
MATHEMATICS WHICH, ALONG WITH MATRICES, ARE IMPORTANT FOR
ANALYZING AND SOLVING COMPLEX PROBLEMS IN ENGINEERING, THE NATURAL
SCIENCES, ECONOMICS, AND EVEN BUSINESS. THE EMERGENCE OF LOW-COST,
HIGH-SPEED COMPUTERS HAS SPAWNED NEW TECHNIQUES FOR SOLVING
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, WHICH ALLOWS PROBLEM SOLVERS TO MODEL AND
SOLVE COMPLEX PROBLEMS BASED ON SYSTEMS OF DIFFERENTIAL
EQUATIONS.

SOLUTIONS
A solution of a differential equation in the unknown function
y and the independent variable x on the interval I, is a function
y(x) that satisfies the differential equation identically for all x in I.
Example 1. Is y(x) = c1 sin 2x + c2 cos 2x, where c1 and c2 are
arbitrary constants, a solution of y" + 4y = 0?
BASIC CONCEPTS
Lecture Notes in ES 3: Differential Equations

SOLUTIONS

Example 2. Determine whether y = x2 -1 is a solution of (y')4 + y2 = -1.

BASIC CONCEPTS
Lecture Notes in ES 3: Differential Equations

SOLUTIONS
• A particular solution of a differential equation is any one
solution. The general solution of a differential equation is the set
of all solutions.
• Example 3. The general solution to the differential equation in
Example 1, y = c1 sin 2x + c2 cos 2x. That is, every particular
solution of the differential equation has this general form. A few
particular solutions are:
• (a) y = 5 sin 2x - 3 cos 2x (choose c1 = 5 and c2 = — 3),
• (b) y = sin 2x (choose c1 = 1 and c2 = 0), and
• (c) y = 0 (choose c1 = c2 = 0).
BASIC CONCEPTS
Lecture Notes in ES 3: Differential Equations

Examples (Board work):

1. Determine the order, unknown function, and the independent
variable in each of the following differential equations:
a.) y’’’ – 5xy’ = ex + 1

b.) 𝒚 + 𝒕𝟐 𝒚 − 𝒔𝒊𝒏 𝒕 𝒚 = 𝒕𝟐 − 𝒕 + 𝟏

2. Is y(x) = 1 a solution of y‘’ + 2y’ + y = x?

INITIAL-VALUE AND BOUNDARY-VALUE PROBLEMS

• A differential equation along with subsidiary conditions on the unknown
function and its derivatives, all given at the same value of the independent
variable, constitutes an initial-value problem. The subsidiary conditions are
initial conditions. If the subsidiary conditions are given at more than one value
of the independent variable, the problem is a boundary-value problem and the
conditions are boundary conditions.
• Example 4. The problem y" + 2y' = ex ; y(π) = 1, y'(π) = 2 is an initial-value
problem, because the two subsidiary conditions are both given at x = π. The
problem y" + 2y' = ex; y(0) = 1, y(1)=1 is a boundary-value problem, because
the two subsidiary conditions are given at the different values x = 0 and x = 1.
A solution to an initial-value or boundary-value problem is a function y(x) that
both solves the differential equation and satisfies all given subsidiary conditions.

EXAMPLE

1. Determine whether any of the functions (a) y1= sin 2x, (b) y2(x) = x, or
(c) y3 (x) = (½)sin2x is a solution to the initial-value problem y" + 4y = 0;
y(0) = 0, y’(0) = 1.
BASIC CONCEPTS
Lecture Notes in ES 3: Differential Equations Exercise
1. Determine (a) the order, (b) the unknown function, and (c) the independent variable for
each of the given differential equations.
a.) 𝑦′′′ 2 − 3𝑦𝑦 ′ + 𝑥𝑦 = 0
b.) 𝑥 4 𝑦 5 + 𝑥𝑦 ′′′ = 𝑒 𝑥
2
𝑑2𝑟 𝑑2𝑟 𝑑𝑟
c.) + +𝑦 =0
𝑑𝑦 2 𝑑𝑦 2 𝑑𝑦
2. Which of the following functions are solutions of the differential equation y' — 3y = 6?
Show your solution.
(a) y = -2, (b) y = 0, (c) y = e3x-2,
(d) y = e2x-3, (e) y = 4e3x-2
3.) Find values of c1 and c2 so that the given functions will satisfy the prescribed initial
conditions.
y(x) = c1ex+ c2e-x + 4 sin x; y(0) = 1, y’(0) = -1
y(x) = c1ex+ c2xex + x2ex; y(1) = 1, y’(1) = -1
