IF YOUR SCORE IS

9-10 Very Good! You may still read the module but you are already knowledgeable with the
topics that we are to discuss.

7-8 Good! Go over the items that you find difficult and then you may proceed to the lessons
in this module that you don’t understand.

0-6 Don’t worry about your score. This module is designed for you to understand all about
matter. So, what are you waiting for? Start your journey. Turn to the next page.
Lesson 1: What is matter?

What is matter?

 Matter is anything that:

o Has mass
o Takes up space (Volumes)
o Made up of tiny particles called ATOMS
 Mass
o A measure of the amount of matter in an object
o An object’s mass doesn’t really change
o This is different that an object’s WEIGHT
 Weight
o A measure of the pull gravity on an object
o Weight can change depending on where you are in the universe!

Mass – is the amount of matter that something is made of

Volume – is the amount of space taken up, or occupied, by an object

Definition of term

Physical substance in general, as distinct from mind and spirit; (in physics) that with
occupies space and possesses res mass, especially as distinct from energy.
The stages of Matter (Sublimation)

MELTING EVAPORATION
SOLID LIQUID GAS
FREEZING CONDENSATION

The classical states of matter are usually summarized as: solid, liquid and gas.

LOW – energy states

 Solid: a solid holds a definite shape and volume without container

 Liquid: a mostly non-compressible fluid
 Gas: a compressible fluid

Melting – is the process by which a substance changes from the solid phase to the liquid
phase

Freezing – is phase transition where liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered
below its freezing point

Evaporation – is the process of a substance in a liquid state changing to a gaseous state due to
an increase in temperature and/or pressure.

Condensation – is the process by which water vapor in the air is change into liquid water.
