Introduction

Workforce Diversity implies differences and similarities

among people working in an organization. This diversity may be
in terms of age, religion, cognitive styles, tenure,
personality, education, ethnic groups, family background,
social status, culture and more. Diversity has been identified
as one of the key drivers for sustaining competitive
advantage. At the same time, it is also a big challenge for
the organizations; so, they should train and educate their
managers and supervisors on valuing and managing diversity.
Thus, the diversified workforce will bring both opportunities
as well as challenges to the organization, if not properly
managed. To be able to understand more about workforce
diversity or individual differences inside the organization we
conducted an interview and survey in Prince Hotel located in
Butuan City.

fast since they also took
part in the changes of their
policies, they all agreed to
the new set of rules and
instilled those in their
mind. Although some of them
struggled a bit with the

organization. They know what
they have to do and they have
a strong desire to do well
and succeed in their tasks.
They also build strong
relationships towards each
other by extending help
whenever some of their
colleagues need it. They
believe that when they do
tasks together they can
accomplish it quickly. As to
the manager she said that as

fields and makes them work
harder and they feel
responsible and accountable
for the decisions and action
they make inside the
organization. As to the
manager she always make sure
that the employees are all
empowered and feel the sense
of belongingness and not just
mere employees in the
organization.
12. What is your All of the interviewed
reaction to the employees like the management
leadership style of the style of their manager.
manager? According to them, she values
ideas from all of them but
sometimes feel that there’s

manager, she really
encourages her people to

whatever matter it is. In her

they work, have fun, learn
and grow as individuals at
the same time that is why
they are wholeheartedly
committed to their work and
the organization. The manager
is also wholeheartedly
dedicated to the company and
to her job. Though she is new
to the company she said her
experience so far is good and
proud to say that everything
that she imposed and changed
was effectively working right
now.
15. On the scale of 1- For the employees, one of
10 how high is your them answered 10 while the
self-esteem? Why? remaining three answered 6,
8, and 9. They said that
there are times when they are
not confident to share their
ideas with others. Although
they have a lot of opinions
in their mind, they find it
hard to speak up and share.
Although they’re a little bit
shy for now but they said
they are trying their best to
boost up their self-esteem
and confidence through the
help of the company. The
manager also rated herself 10
out of 10. She said her
experience in her last job in
the bank really mold her and
boost up her confidence.
Also, as a manager she should
be an example to her
employees when it comes to
self-expression and being
confident in things that you
do.
16. What can men and Most of them believe that men
women learn from each and women are all equal
other? Why? because most of the things
that men can do, women are
also capable of doing it.
Some of them did not really
have a specific answer
because they know that
everyone can really do things
regardless of the gender. And
they just learn things from
the opposite gender on a day-
to-day basis like how they
entertain guests and the
manners as to how they deal
with them. As to the manager
men can learn from women in
the sense that women tend to
have a better communication
skills between colleagues,
they can explain in a more
detailed manner and keen on
every little detail of a
certain task. Women also are
great in multi-tasking but
are still detail-oriented
with every work even if they
do many things at a time.
While women can learn from
men in terms of being firm in
their decisions, that once a
decision is made, it is final
already. Men also do not
invest too much in emotions
that is why they tend to be
more aggressive when it comes
to proving their point, they
are not easily shaken when
things occur and they are
more composed and can hold
back emotions than women.
17. What problem When it comes to problem
solving skills do you solving skills the common
have? Explain briefly. answers of the employees are
analyzing and active
listening. For them, they
analyze the situation
properly then listen to
further understand about the
situation. The manager
possesses almost all the
problem solving skills. Of
course managers are used to
solve problems almost every
day inside the organization.
She indicated that she is
more on listening,
communicating, analysis and
decision making.
18. How do you analyze Both employees and manager
and solve problems? have the same idea in solving
and analyze problem, they
identify the issue first and
clarify things out and then
think of possible solutions
to the problem. The manager
really encourages the
employees to speak up about
the issues in their
organization so that she can
assess things and solve
problems immediately.
19. Are you competitive For the employees, there were
towards your other three who said that they are
colleagues? What drives not competitive towards their
you to become other colleagues in their
competitive? Explain workplace. They stated that
briefly. everyone really helps each
other so that they can
accomplish their tasks well.
The other one said that she
is competitive because in
that way she can bring out
the best in her and that she
can challenge herself to be
better. The manager imposed
an award system in their
organization, wherein every
month, they select an
employee of the month in
every department but for her
it is not to create chaos
between them because the ones
who selects the awardee are
the employees themselves so
for her, it's a healthy
competition for the employees
and not the kind of
competition that can cause
misunderstanding among them.
Also, according to the
manager it is important to
become competitive but not in
a way that you are going to
pull someone down but to
bring out the best in you and
become an asset in the
organization.
20. Are you motivated The employees are all
to do your job well? motivated to do their job
Why? well, according to them they
get motivation from their
family and they want to keep
their job for they know that
it is hard to find a job
these days. The workplace and
their colleagues are also the
factors why they are
motivated. They said that
they have a nice workplace
where they enjoy everything
that they do and workmates
that they can consider as
family. The manager is also
motivated because she loves
her job and she wants the
best for their organization.
She also identified herself
as a workaholic person and
that she always dedicate most
of her time in a work-related
things.
21. If you were to rate From 1-10 most of the
yourself, are you a fast employees rated themselves 7-
or slow learner? What 9 and they considered
are your learning themselves as fast learners
abilities? How did it and they are so much willing
contribute the to learn even more through
organization? the help of their experience
in Prince Hotel. Also,
they’re best to understand
things even if it is new to
them because they want to
learn and grow. From the
manager’s perspective, she
considered herself as fast
learner. As a manager of
course she must possess
things that a manager is
expected to be. Also, in
handling employees she said
that there will always be
employees that are hard to
teach or slow learners but
she is doing her best to help
them because she knows that
it is for the betterment of
their organization and
employees.
22. Do you believe in All of them answered no,
the saying that “you because for them everyone can
cannot teach old dogs’ really learn if given more
new tricks” in the time, no one can really be
organization? If yes, in stuck if they are just
what ways and means? willing to learn. For the
Explain briefly? manager, she also disagreed
with it because she believes
that everyone has room for
improvement and that everyone
can learn new things by
process, and that no matter
how hard it is with the right
guidance and leadership
everybody can embrace any
changes.

Conclusion

Individual differences are the more-or-less enduring

psychological characteristics that distinguish one person from
another and thus, help to define each person's individuality.
These differences are the features that contribute to the
shaping of behavior and to individual's sense of self. People
may vary in personality, motivation, and attribution for
success and failure in learning. They differ in their
preferences for learning and willingness to learn. As an
individual meets another, he/she can experience new things
that could make him/her discover and learn new things.
As to our chosen company/organization which is the Prince
Hotel of Butuan City, although people there are all different
from each other and all have individual differences, they
still abide to their organization's mission and vision. They
are all happy with their working environment and are all
motivated to provide the best service to their customers. They
know how to respect and value each and everyone's differences,
opinions and ideas. They voice out their opinions because they
all know that they can learn and get something out of
everybody's ideas. In their organization, to ensure efficient
and effective human resources, they formulated and implemented
policies meant to promote the welfare and general interest of
its human resources, for them to be able to contribute well to
the attainment of the mission and vision of the organization.

Through that activity, we learned that individual differences

do not solely cause chaos and disorder in an organization as
to what most people think. Individual differences can also be
the way for individuals to learn something new from each
other, they can acquire new ideas and those differences help
individuals become more open to possibilities and changes.
Like what we have learned from their manager, different
opinions can make a whole new idea that could become very
beneficial to an organization. Through good communication,
valuing and respecting each other's differences, organizations
can grow while its members grow as well.

Recommendation

We recommend that management should treat the staff or the

employees well and with fairness. Also, they need to improve
in strengthening when it comes to making the employees follow
company policies; they must impose stronger punishments for
employees who break rules so that employees will be more
cautious about the actions and decisions they make. We also
recommend to let the employees attend trainings and seminars
that help them when it comes to their self-esteem, as stated
that some of them are still not confident when it comes to
sharing their ideas. They need to expose their employees more
which can build their confidence and promote better
communication among employees to their colleagues and as well
as to the management.
