1. A fire clay brick of 10 cm thickness has its inside surface kept at 800oC. If on the other side, air
is blown such that a convective heat transfer coefficient of 25 W/m2K is established, then find
the temperature of the outside surface for an ambient temperature of 30oC. How would the
answer change if you also take account of radiative heat loss from the outside. The thermal
conductivity and the emissivity of the fire clay brick can be taken to 1.0 W/mK and 0.75,
respectively. The value of the Stefan-Boltzmann constant may be taken as 5.67x10-8 W/m2K4.!
!
2. A chemical reactor is operating at an internal pressure and temperature of 100 bar and 300oC.
The pressure vessel with a hemispherical cap is made of 1% carbon steel which has thermal
conductivity of 40 W/mK and a wall thickness of 10 mm. If you use 0.10 m thick-fibre-glass
board of thermal conductivity of 0.05 W/mK as insulation, what will be the heat loss through the
hemispherical dished end if the internal diameter of the vessel is 4 m and Tamb is 30oC.!
!
3. Steam is condensing on the inside of a copper tube of 10 mm ID and 11 mm OD with a
convective heat transfer coefficient of 2000 W/m2K. On the outside, air is flowing at a velocity
of 25 m/s and the convective heat transfer coefficient is 50 W/m2K. If the steam is at a
saturation temperature of 150oC and the ambient temperature is 30oC, then find the steam
condensation rate (in kg/s) over 2 m length of the tube. Take thermal conductivity of copper to
be 385 W/mK and the latent heat of vapourization of steam to be 220 kJ/kg.!
!
4. You wish to increase the heat transfer rate in Problem #3 by 25% using rectangular fins. A
manufacturer can give you a finned tube of a fin thickness of either 5 mm or 15 mm. Which
one would you choose and why? Substantiate with a fin heat transfer calculation.!
!
5. A cylindrical rod of radius R has a uniform volumetric heat generation rate of q’’’. Derive an
expression for the radial temperature profile for a convective heat transfer boundary condition.!
!
6. A house wall is made up of a sandwich of a10 cm-wide brick at its core, 5 cm-thick loosely
packed asbestos and 1.25 cm thick fiber insulating board. If the thermal conductivities are
0.70, 0.15 and 0.05 W/mK, respectively, then find the effective thermal conductivity of the wall.
If the convective heat transfer coefficient both inside and outside the house is 10 W/m2K, then
find the cooling load on an air conditioner from a house of length x width x height of 10 m x 8 m
x 4 m when the temperature inside the house is to be maintained at 24oC and when the outside
is at 45oC. What would have been the cooling load if only a brick wall of 20 cm thickness were
to be used?!
