1. Principles and ideals that helps in making judgement of what is more important.

Moreover, if you understand an individual’s values, you can easily identify what is important for them.

2. People also tend to believe that those values are right because they are values of their particular
culture.

Values are individual beliefs that motivate people to act one way or another. They serve as a guide for
human behavior.

Generally, people are predisposed to adopt the values that they are raised with.

3. Universally recognized as a driving force in ethical decision making.

Ethical decision-making often involves weighing values against each other and choosing which values to
elevate. Conflicts can result when people have different values, leading to a clash of preferences and
priorities.

Still other values are considered sacred and are moral imperatives for those who believe in them. Sacred
values will seldom be compromised because they are perceived as duties rather than as factors to be
weighed in decision-making. For example, for some people, their nation’s flag may represent a sacred
value. But for others, the flag may just be a piece of cloth.

4. Subjective, personal and vary from one person to another.

Values are subjective; they’re personal or organizational, not societal, and they vary tremendously from
one person to another, and from one company to another.

One person’s values may dictate that they feel an obligation to care for their aging parents themselves,
while another feels their obligation is merely to ensure their parents have care – whether through in-
home visits or via living in a care facility. Neither of these views is dictated by law and both could be
considered ethical. Each person might vehemently disagree with the beliefs of the other person. These
personal instincts are guided by their value system.

In short, values can be complicated in a public forum

ETHICS
1. Rules or guidelines that establish what conduct is right and wrong for individuals and for groups.

The term ethics can also refer to rules or guidelines that establish what conduct is right and wrong for
individuals and for groups. For example, codes of conduct express relevant ethical standards for
professionals in many fields, such as medicine, law, journalism, and accounting.

2.Describes the investigation and analysis of moral principles and dilemmas.

The term ethics often describes the investigation and analysis of moral principles and dilemmas.
Traditionally, philosophers and religious scholars have studied ethics. More recently, scholars from
various disciplines have entered the field, creating new approaches to the study of ethics such as
behavioral ethics and applied ethics.

3. Provides a framework for understanding and interpreting right and wrong in society

So, whether we use the term ethics to refer to personal beliefs, or rules of conduct, or the study of moral
philosophy, ethics provides a framework for understanding and interpreting right and wrong in society.

NOTE: By the term ‘ethics’ we mean a branch of moral philosophy – a sense of rightness or wrongness of
actions, motives and the results of these actions. In short, it is a discipline that identifies good or evil,
just or unjust, fair or unfair practices, about moral duty. It is well-based standards that a person should
do, concerning rights, obligations, fairness, benefits to society and so on. The standard puts a reasonable
obligation to stop crime like stealing, assault, rape, murder, fraud and so on.

Ethics and Values together lay the foundation for sustainability. While they are sometimes used
synonymously, they are different, wherein ethics are the set of rules that govern the behaviour of a
person, established by a group or culture. Values refer to the beliefs for which a person has an enduring
preference.

Ethics and values are important in every aspect of life, when we have to make a choice between two
things, wherein ethics determine what is right, values determine what is important.
In the world of intense competition, every business entity work on certain principles and beliefs which
are nothing but the values. Likewise, ethics is implemented in the organisation to ensure the protection
of the interest of stakeholders like customers, suppliers, employees, society and government.

Ethics is a system of moral principles. In contrast to values, which is the stimuli of our thinking.

Values strongly influence the emotional state of mind. Therefore it acts as a motivator. On the other
hand, ethics compels to follow a particular course of action.

Ethics are consistent, whereas values are different for different persons, i.e. what is important for one
person, may not be important for another person.

Values tell us what we want to do or achieve in our life, whereas ethics helps us in deciding what is
morally correct or incorrect, in the given situation.

our priorities for life.
