Benefits of Prose Fiction or Literature in General

For EFL Students and Future EFL Teachers

Prose is one type of literature work which refers to verbal work Piscayanti (2015) Fiction
and non-fiction are two types of prose. Fiction is kind of work which use imagination and
interpretation about something. Across to fiction, non-fiction is a kind work of art which
represent reality and there is no imaginative and interpretive story (Piscayanti, 2015) both two
types of prose has own benefits. The benefits of prose fiction for EFL students and EFL teachers
are educating and entertaining at the same.

There are two benefits of prose fiction for EFL students which are educating and
entertaining at the same time. Educating refers to education purposes in which support EFL
students to be more open minded and knowledgeable. According to Rai (2012) through prose
fiction or literature EFL students can learn new vocabularies which can be used to support their
study. When students read novel for the example as a part of prose fiction, there might be some
of strange vocabularies that EFL students do not know before. The students will try to find the
meaning of the words in order to understand the novel, after find out the meaning, they
understand the meaning of the words, and then students’ vocabulary will increase. Students’
critical thinking also will be developed. Question which refers to “why” it suppose that students
already have critical thinking which it is good for EFL students. In relation to Rai (2012) prose
fiction also teach the reader about culture from any countries, for the example when we read a
novel which come from London or France or any others, EFL students can learn something new
like the social life in London or France, or any countries, how their language style, their gender
qualities, many aspects. Prose fiction also help student to know how language is used by native
speaker. Usually students learn English as foreign language in the classroom during the learning
process with their friends and EFL teacher, we do not know yet how language is certainly used in
different language style by native speaker. Not only educate EFL students, prose fiction also
entertaining. EFL students will entertain through the imaginative story which deliver by the
author, the character, and the conversation. So, through prose fiction, EFL students will get
knowledge, happiness, and satisfaction after reading it.

Preparing good and qualify future EFL teacher is one of benefits of prose fiction. There
are several advantages of prose fiction for future EFL teacher who will teach EFL students.
Usually at the end of semester EFL teacher will teach some kinds of materials which related to
prose fiction such like novel, short story, and many more. Future EFL teacher must have better
understanding about prose fiction and the branches of prose fiction. For the example what the
novel is, the elements of novel, what is short story, how to differentiate short story and novel. At
least, EFL teachers must have basic knowledge about prose fiction, because when teaching and
get material related to prose fiction, EFL teachers ready and can sharing knowledge to students.
Prose fiction also educate Future EFL teacher to be more creative and innovative to develop
learning material. Students might bored if EFL teacher always use same material like the story of
Cinderella all the time. For the example, we can change the story such as “The story of Charlie
and Chocolate factory”. At the same time, students can learn something new, new culture around
the world which depend on the writer’s story, new story, new character and many others.
Therefore, prose fiction is really beneficial for preparing EFL future teachers to be
knowledgeable, creative, and innovative in teaching English.

In conclusion, prose fiction provides a lot of advantages for EFL students and also for
future EFL teacher. EFL students will learn many things which can support their learning and can
relating the story with students’ experiences through prose fiction. In addition, prose fiction also
entertaining because it contains imagination, writer’s experiences, social issue, and many more
story that the reader can predict it. Besides that, the benefits of prose fiction for future EFL
teacher is preparing themselves to be good and qualify EFL teacher which can developing
something new in teaching process.
