Discussions:
In this experiment, the potassium permanganate solution is
standardised become a standard solution by titration using ammonium iron (II)
sulphate solution. Ammonium iron (II) sulphate solution act as primary
standard in this experiment. Primary standard is a reference chemical that
used to measure unknown chemical of another known chemical. It has the
characteristics include high purity, low reactivity with surrounding
environment and can be easily weighed. (Magher, n.d) The experiment
involves oxidation-reduction reaction also known as redox reaction. A redox
titration is a titration of reducing agent by oxidising agent or titration of an
oxidising agent by reducing agent. (Helmenstine, 2019)
Potassium permanganate solution acts as oxidising agent while iron (II)
ammonium sulphate solution and nitrite solution act as reducing agent.
Potassium permanganate solution is the titrant and act as its own colour
indicator to determine the end-point of titration which turned dark purple
colour to pale pink. The experiment is carried out 3 times and the end points
are recorded. In this experiment, Acidic condition is necessary, because in
neutral or alkaline condition, Mn7+ is reduced as far to Mn4+. In the presence of
sulphuric acid, Mn7+ + 5e- Mn2+. Iron (II) salt is oxidised by KMnO4,
Fe2+ Fe3+ + e-.
There are some precaution steps in this experiment. First, wear the
gloves when conducting the experiment and make sure obtain sulphuric acid
and potassium permanganate in fume hood because they can cause chemical
burns. Next, the burette should rinse with potassium permanganate before the
experiment to ensure the purity of experiment.

Conclusion:
The average volume of potassium permanganate solution required for titration
is 23.7cm3. The molarity of potassium permanganate solution is 0.0211M.
