ABSTRACT

Objective of the present study was to correlate blood grouping with weight. Blood grouping was discovered by Karl Landsteiner when performing
the experiments on blood transfusion. According to ABO blood group system, there are four types: A, B, AB and O. Blood group A individuals have
A antigen on RBC’s surface and B antibodies in plasma. Rhesus (Rh) system was discovered in rhesus monkey. RBCs that are Rh+, shows the
expression of the antigen designated D. Fingers were sterilized by using alcoholic swab and then prick the finger with the lancet. Fingertip was
grasped to get a drop of blood, then blood was transferred on the sterile slide. There are three spots of blood on the slide and added Antiserums A, B
and D.
Keywords: Blood grouping, body weight, mean weight.

INTRODUCTION

Blood grouping was discovered by Karl Landsteiner when performing the experiments on blood transfusion. When
mismatched blood of two individuals is mixed, it leads to clumping of RBCs. RBC clumping can cause cracks and
toxic reactions. It could be dangerous or even fatal. There are two types of blood grouping system, ABO and Rh
system that are important. Incompatible blood transfusion leads to agglutination which can be fatal. According to
ABO blood group system, there are four types: A, B, AB and O. Blood group A individuals have A, antigen on
RBC’s surface and B antibodies in plasma. Blood group B individuals have B antigen on RBC’s and A, antibody in
plasma. Blood group AB individuals have both antigens A and B on red blood cells surface and there are no
antibodies are present in plasma. Blood group O, individuals have neither A nor B antigen on RBC’s but both
antibodies A and B are present in blood plasma. Antigens present on transplanted tissues may react with the
antibodies of the recipient leading to graft rejection. ABO is autosomal and gene is present on chromosome 9.A and
B groups are dominant over O. A, and B group is codominant (1). Rhesus (Rh) system was discovered in rhesus
monkey. RBCs that are Rh+, shows the expression of the antigen designated D. It is the transmembrane protein
which transports the carbon dioxide and ammonia across the plasma membrane. If Rh is present in the blood of
subjects, then Rh D is positive. If it is not present, then Rh D is negative. People with blood group A who possess
Rh factor are A+. If they do not have Rh factor, they are A-. It was the same for other groups (2).

There is a proper schedule of taking meals and slowdown in eating time and it is a very good habit for those people
who are more conscious about their weight. Loss of weight is done by taking more sleep. We should eat food that is
made of whole grain. It is the weight loss strategy to use brown rice, oats, barley, buckwheat and whole wheat. We
should not take drinks that are rich in sugars and reduce the amount of sugary drinks in our diet.

For gaining of weight we should use foods that are rich in cholesterol like eggs. For fatty acids, tuna is the better
one to use. We should use banana shakes daily. We should use snacks in evening, for this we should use peanut
butter on bread. Dried fruits provided us a lot of calories than that of the amount obtained from the fresh fruits.

Potatoes provide us the great source of energy because they contain a standard form of carbohydrates and other
complexes as well. Eating more also provides a lot of calories and the person become chubby. For an appetizer, we
also use tonic with consultation of the doctor. (www.the crazy facts.com).

Objective of the present study was to correlate blood grouping with weight.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Body weight of 173 subjects of Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan, Pakistan was calculated with their consent.

Estimation of Blood Grouping

Blood grouping estimation kit was taken and placed it on a working table. Before starting experiment, Fingers were
sterilized by using alcoholic swab and then prick the finger with the lancet. Fingertip was grasped to get a drop of
blood, then it was transferred on the sterile slide. There are three spots of blood on the slide and added Antiserums
A, B and D. After pouring the serum on the blood and tilted the slide to mix thoroughly blood with the serum. After
short time, checked for agglutination. It was noted the agglutination in the drop containing antiserum A and parallel
agglutination was shown in the drop of blood containing antiserum D. Thus, my blood group is A+.

Project Designing

Our project was to link blood grouping with weight. It was a questionnaire based study and we asked subjects about
their weights.

Statistical Analysis

Statistical analysis was performed by using MS word.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

According to this study, it was shown by calculations that subjects with A+ had mean weight 55.00 kg with standard
deviation 8.91. Subjects with A- had mean weight 52.50 kg with SD 4.50. Subjects with B+ had mean weight 52.22
kg with SD 7.34. Subjects with B- had mean weight 52.25 kg with SD 7.42. Subjects with AB+ had mean weight
53.41 kg with SD 9.71. Subjects with AB- had mean weight 43.00 with SD 00.00. Subjects with O+ had mean
weight 53.36 kg with SD 07.61. Subjects with O- had mean weight 52.00 kg with SD 05.89.

Questionnaire based study have given an important result in recent researches (3-10). James and Peer D’ Adamo
work on the link between blood type, personality and diet.

CONCLUSION

It was inferred that subjects with A+ has maximum weight and subjects with AB- has minimum weight.
