1. INTRODUCTION

Direct Assessment (DA) is a methodology that is used to evaluate the integrity of

pipelines due to the time dependent threats of external corrosion, internal corrosion
and stress corrosion cracking.
Oil India Limited (OIL) has engaged Allied Engineers (AE) to perform Internal Corrosion
Direct Assessment (ICDA), External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) and Stress
Corrosion Cracking Direct Assessment (SCCDA) for sixty-one (61) pipelines located in the
State of Assam in line with the NACE International Standards for DA.
This Pre-Assessment Report compiles the data collected for the purpose of conducting
ICDA. For the time-dependent threat of internal corrosion, the Wet Gas Internal
Corrosion Direct Assessment (NACE-WG-ICDA) methodology is applicable to pipelines
that are normally carrying wet gas.
WG-ICDA methodology is described in terms of a four-step Process: (1) Pre-Assessment
(PrA), (2) Indirect Inspection (IDi), (3) Detailed Examination (DEx), and (4) Post
Assessment (PoA). The WG-ICDA method provides the greatest benefit for pipelines
that cannot be in-line inspected; however, the method is not limited to un-piggable
pipelines.

The WG-ICDA methodology is performed to assess the pipelines’ integrity for the threat
of internal corrosion. Whereas, External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA)
methodology is used to assess the threat of external corrosion. Whilst, SCCDA
methodology is utilized to assess the threat of Stress Corrosion Cracking.
The application of these three (3) methodologies simultaneously provide great
advantage to the Asset Owner. Coincidence on the location of indications predicted for
the threats of internal corrosion, external as well SCC will assist in further optimizing
this turnkey DA Program.
This report contains the Pre-Assessment conducted for the 8” Wet-Gas Loop Pipeline
from OIL’s Kathaloni Oil Collecting Station (OCS) to Wilton Grantt via Tengakhat
Junction. The subject pipeline has been given a Line Code#26 for the purpose of positive
identification by AE.
A schematic of Line 26 has been included below in Figure 1. The flow in this line is Bi-
directional. The line carries product from Valve V115 at the Kathaloni GCS to Valve V2
at Wilton Grantt which in between injects the product to 8” line at Tengakhat Junction
going towards Tengakhat OCS.

2. DATA COLLECTION

In compliance with NACE SP0110-2018 for Wet Gas Internal Corrosion Direct
Assessment (WG-ICDA) - execution of the Pre-Assessment step for ICDA includes
following activities:

• Collection, Integration, and analysis of pipeline data;

• Assessment of ICDA feasibility;
• Identify pipeline segments, pipeline regions

To collect all essential data and obtain as much information as possible, AE commenced
a site visit with OIL for data collection, data integration and data analysis. This was
initiated on 4th October 2019. Although, data collection based on AE’s ICDA Pre-
Assessment Protocol have continuously being exchanged with OIL via email up to the
mentioned date. The Pre-Assessment data / observations / results for the subject
pipelines’ operations are described in this report to the best of AE’s understanding.

The data to be used for the Indirect Inspection Step that includes flow and corrosion
rate simulations is presented within Table-1 of Section 2.1.

carried over on separators at OIL’s Kathaloni Oil Collecting Station (OCS) facility. If or
when this happens the formation water characterization is shown in Table 3, 4 and 5

2.7 OTHER RELEVANT / IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Table 8: Other Relevant Information

S. No. Item
OIL has mentioned there are occasional upsets and water/oil/condensates are
carried over in the gas system. However, it is unknown the amount or frequency
1
of these events. AE will assume a quantity of 10 BBLS (4 of oil, 6 of water) = 1.59
KL every three months for the life of the pipeline in every direction
pH measured was 7 at atmospheric pressure. However, when performing the
2 Indirect Inspection (Flow Modelling), AE will calculate the true in-situ pH based
on the dissolved CO2 measured, ppCO2 and Temperature of the system.

4. WET GAS – INTERNAL CORROSION DIRECT ASSESSMENT (WG-ICDA)

FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENT

Based on the data provided and the analysis of it by the Subject Matter Experts (SME),
the feasibility to perform WG-ICDA is confirmed and it is as follows:

Flow Rates provided by OIL (Refer to Table-2), for the month of November and
December 2019:

• There is 25% flow in the direction of Kathaloni to Wilton Grantt and 75% flow is
in the direction of Wilton Grantt to Kathaloni.
• The average flow as provided by OIL is 9,000 SCMD in either direction.
• Flow rate from Tengakhat Junction to Kathaloni GCS / Wilton Grantt is 4,000
SCMD

In consideration of above points, AE has decided to model the pipeline in 2 regions with
the following Scenarios:

FLOW MODELLING

Case -1:(Flow from Wilton Grantt to Kathaloni GCS)

A. Scenario-1: 2001 to 2019:

Region-1: (Wilton Grantt to Tengakhat Junction)

• Due to unavailability of historic flowrate, AE is taking the value reported

for 2019 i.e. current operating flowrate and assuming it to be similar
since commissioning. So, in this case the flow rate for this region of
Scenario 1 = 9,000 SCMD over 19 years and Water Vapor Saturated Gas.

Region-2: (Tengakhat Junction to Kathaloni GCS)

• Due to unavailability of historic flowrate, AE is taking the value reported

for 2019 i.e. current operating flowrate and assuming it to be similar
since commissioning. So, in this case the flow rate for this region of
Scenario 1 = 4,000 SCMD over 19 years and Water Vapor Saturated Gas.

19
Oil India Limited
Line 26 – Kathaloni to Wilton Grantt Loop Line

B. Scenario-2: 2001 to 2019:

• Flow modelling for Scenario 2 = Scenario 1 plus 0.065 bbls of free water
continuously. Includes both Region 1 and 2 with free water.

Case -2: (Flow from Kathaloni GCS to Wilton Grantt)

A. Scenario-1: 2001 to 2019:

Region-1: (Kathaloni GCS to Tengakhat Junction)

• Due to unavailability of historic flowrate, AE is taking the value reported

for 2019 i.e. current operating flowrate and assuming it to be similar
since commissioning. So, in this case the flow rate for this region of
Scenario 1 = 9,000 SCMD over 19 years and Water Vapor Saturated Gas.

Region-2: (Tengakhat Junction to Wilton Grantt)

• Due to unavailability of historic flowrate, AE is taking the value reported

for 2019 i.e. current operating flowrate and assuming it to be similar
since commissioning. So, in this case the flow rate for this region of

B. Scenario-2: 2001 to 2019:

water continuously. Includes both Region 1 and 2 with free water.

CORROSION MODELLING

A. Scenario-1: 2001 to 2019:

Region-1: (Wilton Grantt to Tengakhat Junction)

Region-2: (Tengakhat Junction to Kathaloni GCS)

• Scenario 1 = 4,000 SCMD over 19 years and Water Vapor Saturated Gas.

➢ Scenario 1 = For a total of two modelling runs

B. Scenario-2: 2001 to 2019:

• Scenario 1 plus sum of the following:

o 6 months operating wet gas (water vapor saturated gas) only for 19 years
i.e. in total 9.5 years wet gas
o 6 months operating wet gas (water vapor saturated gas) plus 0.065 bbls
of free water per day continuously
