DONALD G. WARRIOR, COMMANDER, AIR EDUCATION AND TRAINING
COMMAND, WELCOME TO RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE. TODAY, THE
MEN AND WOMEN OF THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE PAY SPECIAL
TRIBUTE TO LIEUTENANT GENERAL JOHN D. AIRMAN, JR. ON THE
OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL TIMES DURING


THE CEREMONY WHEN YOU WILL BE ASKED TO STAND; UPON ARRIVAL
OF THE OFFICIAL PARTY, DURING RUFFLES AND FLOURISHES, THE
NATIONAL ANTHEM, AND THE AIR FORCE SONG. MILITARY PERSONNEL

JOHN D. AIRMAN, JR.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress


July 9, 1918, awards the Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General
John D. AIRMAN, Jr., for exceptionally meritorious service as Vice
Commander, Air Education and Training Command, Randolph Air Force
Base, Texas, from 19 October 2000 to 31 May 2005. During this period,
General AIRMAN’s leadership produced high quality, professional,
expeditionary-minded Airmen for the nation’s Global War on Terror. As
chair of the Basic Military Training Triennial Review, General AIRMAN
ignited the largest overhaul of Basic Military Training in 20 years enhancing
expeditionary skills development. In addition, General AIRMAN oversaw
pivotal technical training initiatives such as the Basic Combat Convoy
Course, ensuring vehicle operators deployed to Iraq with critical combat
skills. He also achieved transformational objectives through activation of the
first F/A-22 pilot training operations group, the Combat System Officer
program, stand-up of the C-130J Formal Training Unit, the CV-22 beddown,
and the Mobility Pilot Development program. As a member of Air
University’s Board of Visitors, General AIRMAN implemented the first
formal leadership course for chief master sergeants and spearheaded Air
University’s regional accreditation. General AIRMAN guided a $2.1 billion
competitive sourcing effort, the blueprint for future Base Operation Support
contracts. He also drove the creation of the command dormitory plan,
investing $700 million to improve more than 13,000 dorm rooms. The
singularly distinctive accomplishments of General AIRMAN culminate a long
and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect the highest
credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Mrs. Patricia M. AIRMAN is hereby awarded the Air Force Scroll of Honor
for exceptionally meritorious service in duties of great responsibility. During
the past 36 years, Mrs. AIRMAN served with distinction in a multitude of
volunteer activities which enhanced the quality of life for Airmen and their
families. She worked with enormous dedication to improve the lives of
thousands of people and, as a result, significantly improved the esprit de

corps of the Airmen who accomplished the Air Force mission. Mrs. AIRMAN
served in several leadership roles for the Officers’ Spouses Club and
volunteered countless hours to various thrift shops where her contributions
helped needy families obtain clothing and sundry household goods. Realizing
the toll the unique and hectic lifestyle “inside the beltway” could have on
military spouses and families, she took action and led, organized, and
performed numerous volunteer activities for spouses and their families in the
National Capital Region. Further, she helped increase military community
relations through her work on San Antonio Fiesta Celebration committees
and as advisor to the San Antonio Military-Civilian Club. Finally, as the wife
of the Vice Commander of Air Education and Training Command, Mrs.
AIRMAN graciously hosted senior diplomats, political leaders, and
international officers and their spouses with activities that strengthened
international relationships. Her contributions to the Air Force were
voluntary, performed as a public service, and demonstrated the highest level
of patriotism to her country. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of
Mrs. AIRMAN reflect the highest credit upon herself and the United States
Air Force.
