Teaching Strategies

o Think-Pair-Share
o What is think-pair-share? Think-Pair-Share is a collaborative
learning strategy that has the students working together to share
ideas and solve problems.
o When should this strategy be used? This strategy can be used
during whole-class mini-lessons for various subject areas to give
the students the opportunity to learn from their peers and
develop their comprehension of the materials.
o How do you know if this strategy is effective? You can determine
if the strategy is effective based off the student’s discussion and
knowledge gain from their peers.
o Can this strategy be differentiated? The strategy can be
differentiated by creating pairs that are made up of varying
abilities to be able to learn from one another.
o Writing Workshop
o What is Writing Workshop? Writing Workshop is a student-
centered strategy that allows the students to write frequently on
a single topic in order to really define those skills.
o Can this strategy be differentiated? This strategy can be
differentiated by providing sentence stems, word walls, and
visual examples of expectations to students during their work
time. Students can also be scaffolded through the process with
questioning.
o How can you determine if this strategy is effective? I can
determine if the strategy is effective by conferencing with the
students and formatively assessing their progress with the
writing.
o Number Talks
o What are Number Talks? Number talks is a short 10-minute
discussion led by a PowerPoint that focuses on the student’s
solution of a mental math problem. This strategy allows students
to share their thought process on how they found their solution.
The teacher may name the strategy they use, and the students
can build off from that strategy.
o Can this strategy be differentiated? Yes, this strategy can be
differentiated by changing up the given strategy to appeal to the
different learning styles in the classroom. The problems in the
number talks can be changed depending on the student’s
abilities.
o Kagan
o What is Kagan? Kagan is a strategy that gets students moving
and interacting with the material. This teaching strategy was
created to get students out of their seats. Kagan is cooperative
learning in the classroom that can be integrated into any lesson.
o Can this strategy be differentiated? This strategy can be
differentiated by following the various Kagan structures that
appeal to the various intelligences in the classroom.
