Teacher: What do you think is one of the most important skills a singer should have?

Student: Oh, I don’t know...a good vocal range? A good sense of pitch?

Teacher: Well yes, these things are very important too...but I’m talking about having good
diction.

Student: Good diction?

Teacher: Yes, good diction. Having good diction is important because the words form the
framework for the music and communicate the emotions of the songs you sing.

Student: And I guess if I’m not articulate, the audience won’t be able to understand me...

Teacher: That’s right! Sloppy speech can distract the audience...or even frustrate them!

Student: So how can I evaluate my own singing diction, then?

Teacher: Well, you can ask yourself two things: first, are the words you’re singing
understandable to both you and your listeners? And secondly, does your diction enhance your
performance?

Student: I guess that’s easy enough. But still, how can I improve my diction? Especially in
different languages?

Teacher: Well, a thorough study of phonetics should be extremely helpful. If you can read and
understand the International Phonetic Alphabet, you technically have everything you need to
ensure that every word you say (and in any language) is pronounced correctly. But it’s not
always that easy.

Student: So I guess it takes a lot of practice to have good diction!

Teacher: Practice makes perfect!
