MOTIVATION LETTER

I take this letter of motivation as an opportunity to articulate my passion towards Water

Technology as a study discipline and my aspiration to pursue a course on sustainable
water technology at SRH Heidelberg. The decision to move towards Water Technology
for my postgraduate studies was founded on the desire to contribute to the upliftment of
the socio-economic status of my society and the betterment of the global environment in
a larger sense.

Knowledge is power: an all but three-word, yet deeply profound sentence, is what fuels
my desire to enroll for the Master’s program in Water Technology at SRH Heidelberg.
The lessons that I would learn on water treatment and management should enable me to
address a number of relevant issues for the global community. Having obtained my
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic engineering, I believe there is substantial
scope to transfer knowledge between these two disciplines.

I derive great pleasure while learning from practically taught sessions. To this end, I have
undertaken field visits out of my own interest and have tried to make the most of these
opportunities. One such visit was my trip to Solara Active Pharma Sciences, an active
pharmaceutical industry where I got to learn about their pharmaceutical ingredients and
also about their manufacturing units. In addition, I was briefed about the on-site waste-
water treatment and recycle procedures. The entire water treatment unit had four different
stages, and as I learnt about each of them, my interests in waste-water treatment
continued to grow. I understand from the program details mentioned on the website of
SRH Heidelberg that the contents of the course touch all the key issues with respect to
fresh water supply and waste-water treatment. The broad outlook with which this course
has been designed serves as another point of motivation to pursue my Master’s at SRH
Heidelberg.

I come from Chennai, which happens to be the 4th largest city in India with a population
of over 8 million. Furthermore, Chennai is an automotive hub and has many automotive
factories that are built around the reservoirs of the city. Over the years, I have seen from
close quarters how water has become a valuable resource with people striving to receive
it in adequate amounts. The poor may receive as little as 30 litres (7.9 US gallons) of
water every day compared to an average American household which uses 1,150 litres
(300 US gallons) of water a day. Acute shortages in water supply in the city has now
become more a trend than an exception and at this rate, I foresee our future generation
suffering from a severe scarcity if necessary steps are not initiated. In this context, the
focus of the course at SRH Heidelberg on sustainable water technology involving water
desalination, purification and clean water supply comes across as an ideal fit to the things
that I want to learn.

More globally, changes in climate have increased the stress on water availability in many
countries. Millions of people worldwide do not have consistent access to water. Lack of
rainwater and groundwater has left many reservoirs completely dry. Therefore, after
completing this course at SRH Heidelberg, I hope to be in a position to contribute in a
significant way towards the improvement of water supply and waste-water treatment
procedures.

Finally, the curriculum at SRH Heidelberg also provides a window to improve my

managerial skills and intercultural competence. This will only augment my learning
experience and make it even more satisfying. Therefore, I look forward to being admitted
to this course at SRH Heidelberg as part of my larger aspiration to contribute towards a
sustainable water technology for the future.
