The Hypocrisy of Environmental Advocacy

Thoughts & Actions in Need
By Ronald Valledor Gomeseria, Ph.D. – January 2019 (Rev 01)

“Thoughts and actions are in need to understand for us to deliver accurately the message we want to
emphasize and address in a manner that can be comprehended by anyone. In this article paper, the
author will discuss the hypocrisy of environmental advocacy means to us as the author provides and
define Three Environmental Ethics relative to the environment we are living with and as a person.”

Insight
The hypocrisy of environmental advocacy is not new to everyone but multiplies on all sectors from
nowhere. The argument can be related to the birth of a young tree as illustrated in the image above
(credit from CDA Aman) under environmental instinct whereas no one can identify. The author supposes
that they are aware of what’s happening around the globe because of global warming that affects the
whole biodiversity we are living with. Thereby, so many individuals, organizations and communities are
links with these behaviors because of the consequences of environmental possibilism ideology into
urbanism which suffers from the depletion and degradation of ecological resources worldwide.
However, the resulting framework for sustainability and environmental advocacy will help in the
formulation of the strategic plan on either mitigation or adaptation. The behavior and attitudes do help
our advocacy which was already explained from many sources as to seek an incremental power of people
in making them responsive. But, it is the needs of the community for the changes within the principles

gathered that needs to be done for a cause in sustaining a sustainable environment for the next
generations with environmental thoughts and actions, perhaps, will satisfy the needs of an advocate.

The bandwagon of Hypocrisy in the Life of an Advocate

As we observe and notice, there are many groups are funding for fun run to save the planet, concert for a
cause everywhere, rallies everywhere by the so-called environmental advocates and others created in their
minds to get the attention of the community for these purposes. But what the author doesn’t understand
though, they are the nuisance that pollutes the environment in the sense that gathering peoples in a
specific location then afterward you can see all waste materials have been scattered around the place. Is
that the one we can say an Environmental Advocate or Environmental Nuisance? Do they help the
environment what they are asking for or just funded by the oligarchs to make some noise?
One of the author questions in his mind about the strategies they did, is it sustaining and helping the
environment? The answer is, of course, it is NOT. They just doing non-sense at all, but if they are
gathering people to clean the canal chambers, cleaning the squatters’ area and cleaning the road in the
urban cities instead of having “fun run to save the planet,” that will be better in helping the city, right?
And this would make sense and obviously, you can see the result at the end of the day, right? But, “fun
run to save the planet,” the question is if you run 5-kilometers an hour, did you save the planet? Of
course, NOT, that only benefit yourself and not the planet, am I correct? Just fooling and idiotic way!
And they are thinking or convincing people to run or walk instead of using vehicles, that’s another story,
and that will be happening through the government policymaking for amendment, and the repercussions
are to discard the vehicles in the urban city than using a bicycle and walking. But the question, is it
favorable to the business sectors that are in greed for the wealth? The author thinks it’s not and doesn’t
help at all and they are all nuisances that pollute the community likewise with the “concert for a cause.”
Everybody understands the basic principle of sustainability. But the question, are those business sectors
understood these situations or just hypocrisy? Or just to show in the landscape market they are?
With the question in the author's mind, are those government policymakers, and government officials or
even the ordinary people are following the rule of law? Obviously, they are NOT but doing stupidity!
Are they practicing for the common good? Or only to fatten their pockets with the graft and corruption
practices? Yes, like what happens to Ayala and Pangilinan have molested the Filipino people since 1997
and up to now for their own sake! The good thing is, we have President Duterte who loves the Filipino as
well as protecting the environment for the next generation, and that can’t be denied.

Environmental Principles towards Advocacy

In the author's principles and view towards sustainability, this can’t be measured but the author can help
somehow, engineering-wise and as an environmentalist in sustaining a sustainable environment we are
dreaming of. And by conserving to a sustainable environment as the author understands, these will not be
ensuring our surroundings a richer and more diverse. But securing the resources in pursuing to provide
improvements in the quality of human life and with biodiversity conservation will have a guarantee of
protecting and enhancing the agricultural sector for our food security, health and leisure pursuits. And this
can be defined from our hearts and will on how we can help no matter what!
The challenge we are now facing in these phenomena is the whole range with the extraordinarily rich and
diverse ecological inheritance of the tropical regions like the Philippines, which is now in jeopardy because
of graft and corruption practices within the national government and the local government units (LGUs)
and at the same time with their compatriot oligarchs in continuing molesting the Filipinos.
However, the implementation is a very challenging of the problems we always encounter in our daily lives
which becomes problematic not only for the individual but for the community at large.

As an example of the human activities and the human pressure on the natural environment has gradually
increased, thereby, the biodiversity has kept on declining because of human demands. So, the problem is
how we can resolve and manage the threats we are facing in the biodiversity. And so far, the world today
is facing habitat reduction, habitat fragmentation, over-harvesting, exotic species, and
pollution are the causes of an unsustainable environment as the author will explain below.
So, what will happen to us now? If these will continues, what might happen in the next generation? The
questions in the author’s mind, again, are we sustaining sustainable development in securing our children
for the next generation and are we safe in that regard? Of course, it is a big NO! Agree?

Over-Harvesting
With the image as you can see in the figure below (Figure 02) whereas a landslide has happened in the
country is an example of overharvesting in the upland resources. And when the heavy rains or typhoon
comes, what will happen next? Did the government politicians and the oligarchs understand those?
There will be a tendency of denudation effect that will harm the people, but always occur and affect the
lowland areas that usually suffer the community at large. However, the upper portion of the mountains in
the above picture can be humanly resolved if ever the landslide comes through, notwithstanding, the
ecosystem biodiversity is NOT, and this will take time to reinstate the same as it was.
We have no choice, but the group of people living in the upland area can do some logging practices for
their needs and anytime they want to that cannot be controlled but denial.
However, it should be on steep slopes of the mountain that may economically benefit the people residing
there in the short term, but maintaining a well-functioning watershed on these slope of the hill may
provide a more significant economic benefit in the long run. And thus, it will preserve and prevent the
landslide in avoiding fatal incidents in the area.

Moreover, in the course of the Rio Summit, engineering-wise became a source and platform that provide
an obvious blueprint for sustainable development especially on setting the codes and standard of practices

in fulfilling the needs of a sustainable building-built environment, and likewise to other concerned too.
Moreover, according to them will depend on the real world whereas every state or country of jurisdiction
has its ideas on the implementation of those agreements that will make it possible and incorporating in the
policymaking to consider sustaining a sustainable development that is aiming for.

Ecological Ethics Somehow in the Future to Understand

In the modern world of ecological aspect, environmental ethics are one of the initiatives and essential for
individuals as we are part of the environment whereas we are dealing with. The author stands to agree
that being one of those beneficiaries given by the Almighty God on Earth, let us do the things that will not
harm and spoil our environment, but in return put our love and care unto it as part of our advocacy.
Moreover, we are already in the technological age whereas everything we need is already available around
the cloud at the stance, and we don’t need to go further and beyond to get them through. However,
please do some precaution because the environment within the information age is too dangerous if we
don’t secure a reliable source and the rights we need for respect for us to live peacefully.
In today’s generation and globalization, the most important as a responsible person that we are aware of
the so-called indiscrimination and destructive human activities because of urbanization. The inculcation
with moral values towards nature and the information we gathered must learn the implications with
respect from several sources of life and forms within the context of the environment. It is about our
behavioral attitudes concerning issues as a responsible person towards natural landscape like what
happening in the upland and lowland resources, the species, and the nonhuman organisms within the
ecosystem which have to secure for a sustainable environment in the next generation to come, right?
With the conducted studies and observations, the author may say that environmental ethics are mostly
related to our behavior and attitudes towards our environment in the context we live in as an actor.
However, according to the dictionary and the author quoted as, environmental ethics helps define a man's
moral and ethical obligations toward the environment. But with human values become a factor when
looking at environmental ethics, where human values are the things and valuable to individuals that they
can use to evaluate actions or events. In this regards, the author provides and define Three
Environmental Ethics with respect to environmental studies that must be learned and adhered in
protecting the environment into practice in sustaining a sustainable environment as such; 1) Knowing
Things and yet They Don’t Know, 2) Lineage Characteristics to the Environment, and 3)
Natures Habituated to Protect.

Knowing Things and yet They Don’t Know

In the world of hypocrisy, we can count in this world of many geniuses. The point here is to secure what
you are fighting for and be true to it. On the other hand, on every occasion where they know those things,
and yet, they don’t know how to protect the environment and reinstate what they have done. But as an
environmental advocate, be straightforward on how to care and protect the environment from the hands
of human activities in a sustainable way of life. We all know that industrialization and urbanization in
the modern world have created valuable pollutions and traffics, however, protection and treatment
processes in securing people’s health are the priority. Therefore, knowing things are sacred things of
wisdom we earned, and this must be valued diligently without excuses that you don’t know. In the world
of hypocrisy, the best example that can give in this technical age is alleged FVP Leni Robredo of the
Philippines, do they? And a lot more, even in your officemates, that can be said, hypocrites!

Lineage Characteristics to the Environment

Whatever we learned in the family, these reflect who we are in the context of the environment. It is
because of the behaviors and attitudes we inherited from them. Moreover, it is individual responsibility
being a role model with the highest moral, conduct and respect by principles. Providing unselfish
knowledge who can be able to share concerning decisions in planning activities and environmental
management in shaping sustainable development. In the Philippines, only two Presidents are nation

builder and has a political will in protecting the lives of the Filipinos, environment, and the country at large
and no other than our beloved President Ferdinand Marcos and President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Natures Habituated to Protect

As human beings, let us not spoils what God gave to us but rather giving them protection and valuing as
we love ourselves and the family. This is what we have and to practice them diligently in the aspect of
environmental science for us to be knowledgeable what nature relates to us — the environmental
safety, health, and technology which must be adhered towards human activities in which we need to
attain in sustaining a valuable nature in the prevention of climate change. And thus, we need to protect
and secure our environment for your children for the next generation. Let us give our hand and contribute
our effort in reinstating the ecosystem into a sustainable environment.

Thoughts & Action on Environmental Change

It is specific to environmental change, including climate variability, which has multiple influences on
human health. Direct impacts resulting include the effects of rising temperatures and more intense
heatwaves and floods within the affected areas.

The goal within the Environmental Change Related Problems in the Advocacy
The goal is to implement a range of strategies, policies, and measures. The decrease of health
vulnerability to the current climate variability and future climate change' in a variety of areas with different
health risks is to design and implement the practical measures to protect health under a rapidly changing
climate as an advocate.

Approaches
The focus on selecting and prioritizing long-term, cost-effective adaptation strategies, secondly
implementing these adaptations in the field, and finally synthesizing and sharing the lessons learned to
bring about measurable changes in adaptive capacity including the followings as such: 1) Reduction in the
burden of environmental change; 2) Modification on the effect of environmental change; 3) Integration of
planning and implementation; 4) Identification and application of short-term incentives for behavioral
change to reduce long-term vulnerability to health impacts.

Advocacy Involvement
It is difficult but a wide range of experience in protecting health within the environmental change and
related problems that can be carried out by an individual or an inter-sectoral group being a motivated
actor for the community.

Futuristic Aspect of Advocacy

Adaptation principles to environmental change, and notably health adaptation and mitigating climate
change, is at an early stage of development and an explicitly designed to pilot adaptation in a limited
number of covered areas, which are subject to the broadest possible range of health vulnerabilities to
climate change, and thereby initially have both commitment and capacity to respond to the soonest.

Conclusion
With all the observations learned, researches and composition by providing critical thinking in the
preparation of this article paper are amazing, and a graduate student is a good chance to know things that
are irrelevant in my professional practice. However, as an Environmentalist and an Environmental
Advocate, I appreciate the efforts they have contributed to protecting Mother Earth as their advocacy.
In resolving environmental issues which becomes massive nowadays, however, incorporating government
law into practice in serving the country’s security will benefit the entire country. Hence, it must be

addressed with a dedication that has the political will and advocacy in implementing the rule of law in
sustaining a sustainable environment for the next generations will be from our thought and action which is
a point of understanding towards hypocrisy that needs to be avoided but honesty and political will.
Moreover, it is the author intended to protect our environment with the environmental ethics that must be
understood as well as in professional working practice in securing a sustainable environment but for the
future generation.
