SQUARE OF A BINOMIAL
Let’s Try: Square the following binomials using the pattern you have
just learned.
The product of the sum and difference of two terms is the difference of the
squares of the terms. In symbols, (x + y)(x – y) = x2 – y2. Notice that the
product is always a binomial.
Activity: Multiply the following binomials using the patterns you have
learned. Show your solution.
ADVANCE MATHEMATICS 8
Please bring with you a ruler and a protractor. The activity will be
done in a short bond paper.
Given:
(x + y + z)2 = Square the first term (x2) ; Square the second term (y2);
Square the last term (z2)
= Product of the first and second term (x.y +x.y)= 2xy
= Product of the first and last terms (x.z + x.z) = 2xz
= Product of the second and last terms (y.z + y.z)= 2yz
Activity: Square the following trinomials using the pattern you have
learned.
1. (r – t + n)2
2. (e + 2a + q)2
3. (m + a – y) (m + a – y)
4. (2s + o – 4n)2
5. (2i2 + 3a – 5n)2
