II. PROJECT SUMMARY

The innovative project is primarily designed to improve the reading comprehension skills
of the Grade 6 learners at Lanna Elementary School in English. This was considered after getting
and knowing the result of the Phil-IRI conducted. Out of 155 learners from Grade 4 to Grade 6
who took the GST Test in English, 80 or 48.4% were failed. The data also presented the reading
difficulties of each grade level. Grade 4 marked 52% % frustration levels, Grade 5 posted 39 %
frustration level, and Grade 6 recorded 56% frustration level.

The school as an institution of learning has been alarmed by this result and as a reading
teacher; it is my desire to help the school in improving the performances of the said pupils
particularly in Grade 6. To start this endeavor, the proponent has developed a module focused on
enhancing the following comprehension skills of the learners;

 Giving the general significance of a selection

 Noting details
 Predicting the outcomes of given event and making inferences
 Following precise direction
 Developing the different reading skills

In each of the comprehension skills, there are selections which will be used to test and
gauge the abilities of the learners in reading and questions to be answered will follow.

III. PROJECT BACKGROUND

Reading is essential for the success of all our activities. The person who read more can
have more knowledge. Reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational
performance. Likewise, children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in
reading tests than those who do not, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general
knowledge and a better understanding of the text.
Many students in the world have difficulties in reading. Lanna Elementary school has also
similar problems on reading development. No matter how teachers gave the effort to teach them
to read, still not all pupils were able to read properly. It was found out that they have difficulty
in giving the general significance of a selection, noting details, predicting the outcomes of given
event and making inferences, following precise direction and other different reading skills.

This context prompted the proponent to implement innovative project entitled Reading
Enhancement and Appropriate development of a Child or REACH.

IV. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

To improve the reading comprehension skills Grade-6 pupils in English.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

A. To develop effective reading materials needed for the improvement of reading

comprehension skills of the learners;
B. To collaborate with other school reading teachers in improving reading
comprehension skills of the learners through LAC sessions;
C. To make use of the developed reading materials for the improvement of

reading comprehension skills of the learners

V. PROJECT METHODOLOGY

The Project REACH (Reading Enhancement and Appropriate development of a CHild)

will start through the development of effective reading materials on improvement of
comprehension skills such as giving the general significance of a selection, noting details,
predicting the outcomes of given event and making inferences, following precise direction and
other different reading skills. The development of such materials is within the contexts of the
learners.
After considering the basic requirements, the proponent will request the School Quality
Assurance Team to check whether the materials met the standards.
The proponent will then incorporate the suggestions of the committee and later present
the final draft for further technical assistance and editing.
Series of LAC sessions will be conducted to ensure proper preparation of the materials
until the finalization period.
When the materials are finalized, they will be attached in the proposal for further review
of the District Research Committee and Division Research Committee.
After going through the different processes involved, the materials will be used in the
implementation of project REACH to improve the reading comprehension skills of the learners.

VI. MONITORING AND EVALUATION

Project Monitoring Report Form will be used to gauge the extent of accomplishment of
objectives and targets of the project. This will be done regularly by the PROPONENT. Issues,
problems and challenges in the process will be noted and considered and consequently,
recommendations or action points will be taken to ensure its success.
