The SAOFFGS Real-Time Product Console system provides a collection of real-time data products in text, image and CSV

file formats. The text products are available for direct review as well as download using the web interface. Each hour, the system provides text and
images tables related to estimated and forecast precipitation products in addition to system model products. Risk outlook products are updated every six hours. Even though the system’s primary product is the FFG data, the other products are made available so that the
forecaster can leverage that information in their efforts for quality control and in their assessments when further applying the FFG data in their operational forecasting activities.

The following identifies and describes each of the SAOFFGS Real-Time Product Console system operational output products (from left to right on the above figure). In interpreting the following products, the term “navigation hour” refers to every hour at the top of the hour (e.g.,
00Z, 01Z, 02Z etc.).

Label Definition Format Updated Description

The text and images provide gridded 1-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour and 24-hour accumulations of satellite-based rainfall estimates (mm) ending on the current hour from the NOAA-NESDIS Global HydroEstimator (infrared-based)
and adjusted by the NOAA-CPC CMORPH microwave-based satellite rainfall product. The satellite-based rainfall estimates are provided on a grid which is displayed over a background of the system sub-basin boundaries.
The MWGHE data products are updated every hour with a latency of approximately 45 minutes and are not bias-corrected (see Merged MAP product). This product is provided for visual quality control assessment of

Accumulated MWGHE Products: Each of the 3-, 6- and 24-hour MWGHE accumulations are produced from the 01-hr MWGHE rainfall input products summed over the corresponding interval, ending on the navigation

accumulation interval, a gray image is shown to indicate insufficient 01-hr satellite input data were available.

The text and images provide 1-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour and 24-hour totals of the Merged Mean Areal Precipitation (mm) for each system sub-basin. This product is derived for each basin based on the best available mean areal
precipitation estimates from bias-adjusted MWGHE or bias-adjusted GHE or the gauge-interpolations. The Merged MAP data products are updated every hour and reflect accumulations of basin-average precipitation of a
given duration ending on the current navigation hour. The Merged MAP 01-hour accumulation product is applied during model processing as the precipitation input to the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting Model.

The text and images provide 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour Flash Flood Guidance (mm) for each sub-basin. For a given sub-basin and duration (1-hour, 3-hour or 6-hour), the FFG value indicates the total volume of rainfall over
the given duration which is just enough to cause bankfull flow at the outlet of the draining stream. Consequently, rainfall volumes of the same duration that are greater than the FFG value indicate a likelihood of overbank flows
at the draining stream outlet. Each of the FFG products is updated every hour. This product is appropriate to use in real time with nowcasts or forecasts of rainfall and other local information to estimate the risk of
flash flooding in the sub-basins.

Values of FFG (1-, 3-, and 6-hour) are not displayed in the graphical products or provided in the data text files for basins with an accumulated drainage area greater than 2,000 km2. Basins meeting these criteria are shown in
grey-colored shading in the products and as -999.00 in the text files.

The text and images provide 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour Imminent Flash Flood Threat (mm) for each sub-basin. The values indicate the difference of the Merged MAP of a given duration and the corresponding past navigation
hour FFG of the same duration for a given sub-basin. In this sense, the IFFT value is considered a current “observation”. The last 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour durations of FFG are considered with current corresponding Merged
MAP in the computation of IFFT.

IFFT 01-hr: Difference of 01-hr FFG from a previous navigation hour and 01-hr MAP observed over the following 1 hour (mm/1hr).
IFFT 03-hr: Difference of 03-hr FFG from a previous navigation hour and 03-hr MAP observed over the following 3 hours (mm/3hr).

In the images, an approximate measure of uncertainty in the IFFT estimates is indicated by the ranges in the color scale (with yellow indicating the range of values that are less likely to be of concern for flash flooding and with
orange and red indicating progressively higher risk of flooding for the sub-basin of interest). The time stamp on each IFFT product represents the end of the valid period.

IFFT provides the forecaster with an idea of likely regions of imminent flash flood threats. Note that this set of products concerns the past rainfall and should be evaluated before using for warnings. IFFT is offered as
a baseline product that must be carefully evaluated by the forecaster in real-time.
Values of IFFT (1-, 3-, and 6-hour) are not displayed in the graphical products or provided in the data text files for basins with an accumulated drainage area greater than 2,000 km2. Basins meeting these criteria are shown in

The text and images provide 1- hour, 3-hour and 6-hour Persistence Flash Flood Threat (mm) for each sub-basin. The values indicate the difference of recent persisted Merged MAP of the given duration and the
corresponding current FFG of the same duration for a given sub-basin. The last 1-hour, 3-hour and 6-hour durations of Merged MAP are persisted and considered with current corresponding FFG in the computation of PFFT.
In this sense, the PFFT is considered a “forecast” with persistence used as the rainfall forecast.

grey colored shading in the system products and as -999.00 in the text files.

Flash Flood Risk products include text tables and images of 12-hour, 24-hour and 36-hour relative frequency of positive flash flood threat for the entire forecast lead time interval that is due to forecast rainfall from the Model
Forecast. This is a measure of the forecast flash flood occurrence frequency. Note that the quality of this product depends critically on the reliability of the rainfall forecast throughout the lead time interval.

For Example:
Text & 00, 06, The 12-hr FFR at 00:00 UTC = relative frequency of positive flash flood threat betweenthe next 12 hours.
BMKG Flash
