Course Description

This course provides students with a fundamental understanding of operations and their role
in the organization and in the supply chain. It surveys a wide range of topics, including process
analysis, capacity management, forecasting, inventory management, quality management and
supply chain management. The course deals with these topics through a hands-on interactive
approach. The course is integrative in nature, emphasizing the fit and relationship of
operations with other functions of the firm.

About the Course

Operations are at the heart of every productive enterprise whether it is a factory producing
automobiles, an ad agency creating promotional messages, or a hospital delivering healthcare.

Operations and supply chains have to be designed, managed, and controlled. This course is
meant to help you gain an understanding and appreciation of this crucial topic. You will do
this in an active learning environment that will develop your critical thinking and analytical
skills, improve your oral and written communication skills, enhance your computational skills,
and gain experience in working productively with your class-mates.

Evaluation:
Group Paper & Presentation 20%
Homework 30%
Final Exam 50%

Group Paper & Presentation: A paper and presentation on a supply chain topic written by a
team of no more than 2 people. More details are on Canvas.

Weekly Homework: Every week there will be homework that will have to be turned in prior to
the beginning of class. Homework should be done in the same teams as the project. It is the
team’s responsibility to ensure that the work is done and submitted on time. There will be no
extensions.

Final Exam: 2-hour exam on Canvas.

Grading Scale

93.33-100 = A 90-93.33 = A-
86.67-90 = B+ 83.33-86.67 = B 80-83.33 = B-
76.67-80 = C+ 73.33-76.67 = C 70-73.33 = C-
0-70.00 = F

Required Course Material: You will need to purchase ($52.50) a set of readings and cases
from Harvard Publishing: https://hbsp.harvard.edu/import/698283. You will have to
purchase the entire course pack. It will cost $52.50.

Academic Dishonesty

Constructive consulting with other students is encouraged. However academic dishonesty


will be dealt with strictly in accordance with University policy. The penalty could be an F in
the course. Among other things, academic dishonesty includes copying someone else’s work,
or submitting files or copies of files created by others. Helping someone else be academically
dishonest is also academic dishonesty and will be penalized just as severely.
