SSC-311 VR fire and safety training Khoo Eng Tat CEG, EEE, ME 5 Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are poised to become the next generation computing platform. Several technology Research
Arts and Social Sciences giants are making huge investments, most notably Facebook's USD 3 Billion acquisition of Oculus VR. VR and AR markets are projected Developmental
Computing to be USD 150 Billion by 2020. Besides gaming and entertainment, a big part of market growth will be contributed by new vertical User-oriented
Industrial Design applications in retail, healthcare, simulation, technical training and others. Industry collaboration
There are many existing and upcoming VR and AR systems from Oculus, HTC Vive, Samsung GearVR, Google Daydream which includes Hardware
head-mounted display (HMD), see-through glasses, hand controllers, gaze tracking, etc. The systems provide unparalleled immersion Software
and interaction.
This project aims to develop a VR fire and safety training system that provide realistic environment and training scenarios. Students are
expected to identify design requirements of fire and safety training and develop prototypes that could be used by the firefighters or
building fire safety officers and their occupants. To make the training realistic, representation of the actual environment in VR should be
considered, for example, 3D capture of the room, 360 photos/videos, etc. Students could refer and improve upon previous year’s VR
prototype.

SSC-313 Aging in place Elliot Law EEE, ME 4 Recent statistics show that the number of elderly citizens aged 65 and above in Singapore is increasing rapidly. The size of this group of Developmental
Industrial Design citizens doubled from 220,000 in 2000 to 440,000 in 2015, and is expected to increase to 900,000 by 2030. The number of such elderly User-oriented
citizens who live alone is also likely to increase to 83,000, up from 35,000 today. At the same time, the average life expectancy of Hardware
elderly citizens is expected to increase to about 87 years by 2030. As a result, to support aging in place there is an increasing demand to Experimental
provide more elderly-friendly homes, towns, and communities across Singapore. However, while there has been much attention paid to
remaking our public spaces and transport system elderly-friendly, there are still plenty that can be done to remake homes so that
elderly citizens can live independently in a comfortable manner.
In this project, students are expected to design an innovative product and/or service that can help the elderly with their daily tasks or
activities in their homes. The scope of the project include the following:
1. Review current products and/or services that are targeted at helping the elderly age in place, particularly in their homes.
2. Identify the needs, wants, and desires of target users and other relevant stakeholders.
3. Propose and evaluate several design solutions for the intended product and/or service.
4. Design, build and test a prototype based on the selected design solution
5. Validate the proposed design solution with end users and/or other stakeholders.

SSC-314 Intelligent self-balancing system for lifting of PPVC modules Elliot Law CVE, CEG, EEE, ESP, ME 4 Pre-fabricated pre-finished volumetric construction (PPVC) is an increasingly popular approach to improve productivity in the Developmental
Ernest Abbott (CEE) construction sector. In this construction method, large room-sized units (termed as “modules”) are fabricated and finished off-site – User-oriented
with complete architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical features – and then transported on-site to be assembled with other Industry collaboration
units, normally by stacking, in order to form a complete building. The advantages of this approach include shorter construction time Hardware
on-site, minimal disturbance surrounding a site, better quality control of construction products, economy of scale, and lower Software
manpower costs. Experimental
Nevertheless, the success of the PPVC approach hinges on several key factors. One of these factors is the ability to lift the PPVC
modules in a safe and efficient manner. A PPVC module and its lifting frame must be kept level during a lifting operation. However,
there is a tendency for the module and/or its lifting frame to tilt during lifting because the weight distribution is normally asymmetrical.
Keeping them level during lifting is no mean feat as a typical PPVC module could weigh around 25 tons or more. The current approach
in the industry is complicated, tedious, and time-consuming as it relies on the use of manual labor to calculate and adjust the length of
cables that are used to lift the module and its lifting frame. These adjustments have to be made every time before a module is lifted.
There are currently no automated or semi-automated solutions available in the market for this purpose. With increasing push from the
Government for greater adoption of the PPVC approach in future projects, there is potentially a big market for a good solution to this
lifting problem.
Therefore, the objective of this project is to design an intelligent self-balancing system for lifting of PPVC modules. The solution needs
to be able to work at building sites as well as factories where the modules are fabricated. Students will work with a potential client in
this project. The scope of the project includes the following:
1. Review the requirements of the client as well as other stakeholders in the industry through field work, client survey, market analysis,
etc.
2. Evaluate existing solutions that have been used by other similar projects locally and overseas.
3. Propose and evaluate several concept solutions to the problem.
4. Design, build, and test scale prototype(s) of the selected concept solution.
