verified prior to issue
• Checked for suitability of reproduction and reduction
• Correctly titled, numbered and orientated
• Consistent in appearance, and are produced on correct stationery
• There will be occasions for which a specific project will need to deviate from the requirements of
this General Design Drafting Procedure. Any deviations will be listed under a specific section in
the Project Execution Plan, listing the deviations along with a brief description, where appropriate,
as to why the deviation was required.

2 SCOPE
This procedure defines the responsibilities, methodology and standards to be adopted for:
• Determining the type and extent of drawing production
• Defining the drafting standards
• Specifying the standard symbols to be used
• Titling and numbering of drawings
• Checking, design review, approval, issue and later revision of drawings.
This procedure shall be incorporated into the project procedures for each new client and used for all

6 TYPICAL DRAWING WORK FLOW

Electronic computations, calculations, sketches and drawings must be filed under the relevant project
directory as illustrated in the following ‘Typical Drawing Work Flow’ (chart) and ‘Electronic Project
Directory Structure’ (file tree).

6.1 Design Phase

A drawing is developed with input from both the designer and engineer together with site survey
information, vendor data and data acquired from the client to produce an initial sketch. This sketch is
filed in the Master Project Folder until it is further developed by the designer.
Once drawn, the drawing is controlled by the internal revision no. (refer to section 12) starting with the
letter ‘A’ The designer shall stamp the drawing “Checkprint” ready for the design checker and
Engineer to check (usually one print each but this can be sequential). All stamping of drawings shall
be on the front and as close to the bottom right hand corner as possible.
The Design Checker shall mark up the check print with comments as required (the drawing is now
internal revision ‘B’) and pass to the Designer to back draft. This process is repeated until there are no
more changes to be made.
When the Designer, Checker and Engineer are satisfied, the new print is stamped “Master File”, dated
and filed in the Master Project Folder. Any old copies are stamped “Superseded” and filed in the
checkprint/superseded section of the Master Project Folder.
If site verification is required, a copy of the master is taken and stamped ‘Site Verification’. On
completion, the site verified mark up is dated and any relevant comments are transferred to the master
file copy for backdrafting.
When the project is complete (i.e. all drawings are stamped “Master” and dated), a squad check may
be required. (See section 10.5 Squad Check). If so a pink copy of the masters is taken and stamped
“Squad Check” and dated. A Squad Check review form will accompany the Squad Check copies and
dispensed to the appropriate people for Squad Check. Comments are then reviewed by the Designer
and Engineer and are transferred to Master Copy by the Designer to be drafted. If there are no
comments, then the Masters are prepared for Quality Verification Section 1.
Relevant comments from Quality Verification section 1 are transferred to Master by the Designer for
backdrafting. Once this is done (or there are no comments) the package is signed off by Worley and
Worley ABB staff then by the Client and issued to Document Control for Quality Verification, Section
2.

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Any comments from Quality Verification, section 2 are relayed back to the Designer who will in turn
resolve them and issue the drawings back to Document Control ready for issue to the client,
construction, vendors etc.
The signed wet originals and electronic files are issued to client. The Master Project Folder is now
updated with photocopies of the new-signed Masters stamped “Master” and dated. The old “Masters”
are superseded.
Document control also stores photocopies of the newly signed prints in their own project folders for
future reference (not to be confused with the designers Master Project Folder).
(Refer to following “Typical Drawing Work Flow” chart for overview of the Drawing Control
process)

DMG Master / As-Built Package Crosscheck:

The cross check conducted by the Doc-Controller between the signed paper originals of the As-Built
package being issued and the Master drawings received from the Esso DMG.

DMG Master Drawing:

Esso drawing that is stored in the Esso DMG where a copy has been sent and logged out to WABB for
As-Building. This will remain logged out to WABB until that drawing has either been update and sent
back, or listed as not required for As-Building on the transmittal notice. Other contractors will not be
issued masters until this drawing has been sent back and logged back in with the Esso DMG
DMG Project Drawing:
Esso drawing that is stored in the Esso DMG where a copy has been sent to WABB and logged as
such. These drawings are for general project use. Esso will know that WABB have this drawing at the
requested Rev No. you will be advised of this if you try to order it again. Other contractors can
request these drawings for general use.

E/C Report ( Electronic Check Report ):

The Electronic Check Report is generated by an AutoCAD lisp program that reads each type of
drawing and checks to see if the line types and blocks used match those of the Critical Drawing
Menus. The report will be in the form of a text file that will list all line types and blocks used and will
state IS NOT A CRITICAL BLOCK for every item that does not match.

Electronic Check:
Process of running a lisp routine ( in house written software program ) from either a button on the
Critical ( CRIT14 ) Menu or by loading the lisp file:
K:\CADAPP14\CRIT14\ESSOCHK.LSP and typing ESSOCHK at the command prompt.

8 DRAFTING STANDARDS

8.1 Drawing Content

• All drawings shall contain the Worley and Worley ABB logo, job No. & internal revision No.
located in the bottom left hand corner of the drawing sheet (see Attachment A).
• Drawings shall include all information where graphical representation is most appropriate. Care
shall be taken not to provide redundant information by repeating sections out of other drawings or
specifications, as subsequent revision of one or the other can lead to confliction in the instructions
to Vendors or Contractors.
• All drawings shall include sufficient detail to clearly convey the design intent and permit the
fabrication and installation of the items covered.
• On all layout drawings there shall be sufficient grid numbers or coordinates to permit locations to
be identified with reference to other drawings.
• The drawing standard shall be uniform and of good quality. All linework and lettering shall be
dense black.

8.2 Standard Drawing Sheets

• Drawings shall be produced on Worley and Worley ABB standard A1, A2 (not preferred), A3 or
A4 size drawing sheets (see Attachment A), except those drawings for which a special purpose
sheet is specified in a discipline procedure.
• Alternatively, Client standard sheets or customised Worley and Worley ABB standard sheets may
be used when required by the project.
• For CAD drawings the electronic file copy is defined as the "original" and the signed approved
hard copy is defined as the "wet" original.

8.3 Drawing Title Block

Prior to the commencement of each drawing, the title and drawing number shall be assigned by the
Lead Designer, and advised to the designer. This shall be entered exactly as the project drawing index.
The title block has an allowance for three lines of text for the following information:
Line 1 - Project Name ( as defined in the new project information sheet )
Line 2 - Location, Equipment Number or System
Line 3 - Type of drawing
Example: Underground Gas Storage Project
Gas Compression Area A01
Planning Study

Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Title blocks for all drawing deliverables to the Client shall be stenciled in ink (when not CAD
generated).
All other sections of the title block shall be fully completed, including the following boxes:
• Drawn by, checked by, approved by etc. etc.
• Revision, date and description as specified by the project engineer for each issue
• Drawing status box ( where applicable ) shall contain only the following standard terms:
− Preliminary
− Approved for Design
− Approved for Construction
− As Built
• Reference drawing box where higher level drawings should be recorded that would assist to find
other related drawings. Typically these should be:
− Plot Plans
− Key plans
− Drawings located above and below
− Schedules
− P&ID’s
− FEC’s
Note that some clients such as Esso have standard requirements for cross referencing which must be
conformed to

8.4 Basic Arrangement

• Material Lists
− Material List shall commence in the upper right hand corner of the drawing.
• General Notes
− General notes shall be located in the lower right hand corner of the drawing.
• Holds Lists
− The hold lettering shall be 5mm located within the hold cloud:
HOLD 1
− All items that are not concluded on a drawing prior to any formal issue, shall be added to a
holds list. These items shall be invert clouded on the body of the drawing, sequentially
numbered and added to the drawing holds list that is located above the general notes in the

lower right hand corner of the drawing. This information should be forwarded to the Project
Engineer for action.
• Key Plans
− Key plans (see Figure 8.1), shall be located in the lower right hand corner of the drawing
closest to the Title Block under the Holds List and General Notes. The area covered by this
particular drawing shall be identified by hatching.

8.5 Drawing Orientation and North Arrow

The standard North arrow decal or CAD symbol shall be used to identify North on drawings (see
Figure 8.2), and shall be placed in the upper left hand corner of the drawing.
Drawings shall be oriented so that the north arrow points up, or as second choice to the right. Any
other orientation shall be used only with permission of the Lead Designer. Where possible, north
arrows shall point in the same direction for all drawings on a particular project.
Where plant North differs from true North, indicate the "True North" direction quoting the delta angle
(see Figure 8.3).
North orientation on isometric details shall be up and to the right. Never mix North directions on
isometric drawings on a particular project.

8.6 Scale
The scale to which a drawing is drafted shall be indicated in text (e.g. 1:1) in the space provided in the
title block and by the use of a standard scale bar (see Figure 8.4). If more than one scale is used, the
scale block shall indicate "as shown" and the applicable scale noted under each detail. If the drawing is
not drawn to scale NTS shall be shown in the scale box on the drawing.

Note: Under no circumstances shall a drawing be scaled to determine any dimension to be used for
further design, equipment specification, or fabrication use, unless specifically required to do so by a
discipline or project procedure, e.g. for bulk piping MTO, preliminary cable MTO, small bore piping
isometrics, etc.
List Of Preferred Drawing Scales:

8.7 Standard Units

The following units shall be used for all Projects, except where the Client nominates alternative units,
which will be defined in the project procedures and will then become the project standard units:
Co-ordinates - metres (m)
Dimensions - millimetres (mm)
Mass - kilograms (kg)

Design & Drafting
Procedure

Force - kilo Newtons (kN)

Moment - kilo Newton metre (kNm)
Pressure - kilo Pascal gauge (kPag)

8.8 Drafting Mediums

All new drawings shall be produced using CAD, unless otherwise instructed by the Client.
On CAD drawings, revision and `Hold' clouds shall be on separate CAD layers from the content of the
drawing to facilitate later removal.
Drafting mediums for polyester film shall be black drafting ink for stenciled portions and black plastic
leads N1 & N2 for the general drafted portions of the drawings. All revision and `Hold' clouds shall
be drawn on the reverse side in red chinagraph. Erasure of both permanent and non-permanent drafting
shall be by either soft white plastic erasers suitably dampened to prevent damage to the drafting
surface, or yellow ink eraser. At no time shall razors or scalpels be used on original polyester film.
Drafting mediums for paper shall be soft graphite lead (HB or softer), with erasure by soft white
plastic eraser.

8.9 Lettering
The objective of good lettering is to provide distinct uniform letters and figures which will be clearly
legible in reproductions from the original drawings, either in full size copies or with a reduction of 2:1
(A1 to A3).
Hand lettering shall be legible, neat, uniformly spaced and in dense black. Guidelines shall be used at
all times, and all lettering shall be upper case and slanting forward or vertical (see Figure 8.5).
Lettering stencils (except for the title block) shall not be used without prior permission. Normally the
space between words shall be equivalent to the width of one letter and the space between lines shall be
equivalent to the height of a letter.
When it is necessary to write dimensions or notes other than horizontally, they shall be written
vertically aligned or slanting to the right and oriented to be viewed from the right hand side of the
drawing sheet. When dimensions or notes are inclined to the left, they shall be written to be viewed
from the left-hand edge of the drawing, but this is non preferred and shall be avoided where possible.
Where different designers work on the same drawing, (e.g. for drawing amendments) lettering styles
shall be matched as near as possible.
Upper case ISO font stencils may be used for all lettering required to be 5 mm and above in height if
the designer is not comfortable with printing by hand.
All notes shall be aligned left justified by the use of a vertical guideline.
Unless specified otherwise in a discipline or project procedure, letter heights on all drawings shall be
in accordance with the following table:

8.10 Linework
Linework conventions in this section are a general guide. For detailed applications refer to the
individual discipline procedures.
Line thicknesses shall be suitable for full size drawing reproduction and for reduction of the drawing
to a smaller size. A1 size sheets shall be capable of reduction to A3 size.
All lines shall be clean, dense black, and uniform to produce the most legible prints. There shall be a
distinct contrast in thickness between the different types of lines. There shall be a minimum spacing
of 1.0mm between the edges of any two parallel lines.
For manual drawings, only four basic widths of lines shall be used.
The four nominal line weights are:
• Double thick (0.9 mm)
• Thick (0.7 mm)
• Medium (0.5 mm)
• Thin (0.3 mm).
The linework conventions to be used to represent the different drawing features shall be as shown in
Attachment B, and described below. The lineweight for each type of line shall be as defined in the
discipline procedures. As it is not possible to get identical pencil thicknesses to pen thicknesses in
each line weight, where they differ the thickness to be used shall also be defined in the discipline
procedures.
• Visible lines shall be used for representing the visible outline of the item.
• Background lines shall be used to indicate the outline of items which are the responsibility of
other disciplines.
• Hidden lines shall be used to show the hidden features of an item and shall also be used to show
items hidden from direct view by other items on the drawing.
• Hidden lines shall be omitted wherever they are not needed for clarity or where their use
diminishes the legibility of the drawing.
• Existing facilities shall be clearly identified from the current design work by the use of the
specified line type.
• Centre lines shall be used to indicate the axes of equipment items, symmetrical bolt circles and
paths of motion.
• Match lines shall be used to indicate the location of the plane where a view is continued on
another drawing. Battery limit lines indicate the maximum extent of a particular part of a plant.

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

• Allowances for future equipment shall be clearly identified from the current design by the use of
the specified line type.
• Phantom lines shall be used to indicate maintenance and movement zones.
• Section lines shall be used to indicate the cut surfaces of an item in a sectional view. Hatching of
materials in section is time consuming and obscures detail. It shall therefore be kept to a
minimum.
• Cutting-plane lines shall be used to indicate the location of cutting planes in sectioning and the
viewing position for removed views or removed partial views.
• Break lines shall be used on drawings to limit a partial view or to limit a broken section.
• Dimension, extension, and leader lines shall be thin lines to contrast well with visible lines and
hidden lines.
Dimension lines shall be used to indicate the extent and direction of dimensions.
Extension lines shall be used to indicate the termination of a dimension. To avoid confusing extension
lines with the visible lines of the item, a gap of approximately 2 mm shall be left where the extension
line would join the item.
Leaders shall be used to direct notes, dimension lettering or identification symbols to features on the
drawing.
Leaders shall be thin straight lines, and shall originate at either the beginning or end of a note. Where
possible, 30°, 45° or 60° angles shall be used for leaders. The horizontal section of the leader shall not
underline the note.
Leaders shall not be drawn crossing each other. Leader lines and dimension lines shall also not be
drawn crossing. If it is absolutely necessary, to cross a leader and a dimension line, it shall be done by
breaking the leader line.
Linework for new items shown on existing drawings shall be shown bolder, so as to clearly depict the
new scope of work. This shall be converted to the standard settings at the as-building stage of the
project.

8.11 Dimensioning – General

The designer shall show enough dimensions to clearly define the intended size, shape and location of
the item. Each dimension shall be shown only once. In some cases it may be necessary to repeat the
dimension on another sheet, but this shall be kept to a minimum.
All equipment and structures shall be located by coordinates. All coordinates shall be in metres, i.e.
E500.000 = five hundred metres east from datum. All other dimensions shall be in millimeters, i.e.
1000 = one metre.
When using coordinates, the letter shall always appear prior to the numbers.

005-000-PDM-012 Page 30 of 124

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Dimensions shall work from a minimum number of datum or centre lines to facilitate set out. Closing
dimensions shall not be given.
Dimension lines shall be drawn unbroken with the dimension written above the line, and with
sufficient separation from each other and the subject to avoid confusion. The points to which
dimension lines relate shall be clearly indicated.
For dimensioning in limited space, a leader line shall be used to bring the dimension lettering to a
clear space.
Vertical dimensions shall be printed to be viewed from the right side of the drawing.

8.12 Dimensioning Plant Elevations

The Project Engineer shall approve a datum work point, establish a nominal elevation of EL100.000 =
High Point of Finished Paving (HPFP) so that negative elevations will not be required and set an
orientation relative to true North. A formula for conversion of the plant data relative to true elevations
shall be shown on the civil drawings.
All disciplines shall use the same datum as established for the project.
All elevations shall be in metres, i.e. EL.101.000 = elevation one hundred and one metres. This
elevation shall be quoted relative to the established datum, (e.g. "EL.106.500 = six metres five
hundred millimeters above the established datum").
Departments other than Civil/Structural shall not designate platform and walkway elevations as "top of
steel (TOS)" or "top of concrete (TOC)", etc. The designation "top of finished floor elevation
(TFF.EL)" shall be used. Detail and vendor drawings of vessels and other equipment shall not use the
word "elevation" in any manner.

8.13 Reference Dimensions

Reference dimensions are dimensions additional to those necessary to define and locate an item, which
are provided to assist in the location or construction process. They may also be provided as a check
dimension to existing equipment that has not been dimensionally field checked. The use of reference
dimensions shall be minimised as it has the potential to create a dimensional conflict.

8.14 Reference Symbols

Where possible, geometric items to be added to a drawing shall be depicted by the use of standard
symbols automatically generated by the CAD menu. Symbols for use by specific disciplines are
included in “Section 14 – CAD User instructions” of this procedure.
When referring to another drawing where a section or detail is shown, it can normally be assumed that
it relates to the same discipline and project. Thus it is only necessary to indicate the sequence number
(e.g. 1234), not the entire drawing number (e.g. 084-07123-M1234).

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

All symbols for showing and referring to sections and details shall be shown for explanation, on the
front sheet of contract sets of drawings.

8.15 Section Symbols

8.15.1 Section Designation

Sections shall be identified with respect to the drawing on which they are shown rather than the
drawing from which they are cut. That is, the first section shown on a sheet shall be designated as "A"
in the top of the bubble, and the sheet number from where it is cut shall be entered in the bottom of the
bubble. The next section shown on that sheet shall be designated "B", and so on. Alternatively
sections may be uniquely designated by project or project area, and in this case the Lead Designer
shall maintain a section designation register.

8.15.2 Referencing Sections

(a) General
Sections (see Attachment D) shall only be taken from plan or elevation views, and shall not be
taken from a section view.
Where possible, all sections shall be taken looking toward the top or to the left of the street.
The letter in the upper portion of the circle is the section designation. Sections shall always be
designated by letters, and if necessary, by the use of double letters, e.g. "AA", "AB", "AC", etc.
The number in the lower portion of the circle is the sheet number on which the section is drawn.
A dash “-“ indicates that the section is cut and detailed on the same sheet.
The solid arrow point shows the direction of the cut.
The complete symbol shall be shown on one side of the plan or elevation only.
If the section is staggered, the section line shall also be staggered.
Note that sections utilise a short, heavy cutting plane line designation, not a solid line, through
the length of the section.
(b) Partial Section
A partial section indicates a limited portion only of the item shown in the section view. It may
be cut in the plan or elevation.
(c) Section Title
The title reference to be used on the sheet which shows the section shall be located under the
drawn section.
The numbers of any additional drawings on which the section is cut shall be shown in repeat
circles located adjacent to the first one.

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

When sections, elevations and details are not to scale, the abbreviation "NTS" shall be used in
place of the scale in the title.
When sections, elevations and details are typical, the abbreviation "TYP" shall be used in the
title.
The scale shall be omitted from the section title when it is the same as the scale shown in the
drawing title block.

8.16 Detail Symbols

8.16.1 Detail Designation

Details (see Attachment D) shall be identified with respect to the drawing on which they are shown
rather than the drawing from which they are taken. That is, the first section shown on a sheet shall be
designated as "1" in the top of the bubble, and the sheet number from where it is taken shall be entered
in the bottom of the bubble. The next detail shown on that sheet shall be designated "2", and so on.
Alternatively details may be uniquely numbered by project or project area and in this case the Lead
Designer shall maintain a detail number register.

8.16.2 Referencing Details

A detail is a small area of the construction drawn to a larger scale. Taken from a plan, the enlarged
detail shall be a plan; from a section, it shall be a section; and from an elevation, an enlarged portion
of the elevation. However, it may also be an isometric detail from any view requiring further
clarification. Isometric details shall be drawn to proportion, not to scale.
The detail symbol is shown with the arrow pointing to the relevant area. The use of reference drawing
numbers to/from the details shall be carried out in the same way as for sections.
The detail symbol may be drawn on the back of the drawing sheet (and shall be on a separate 2D-CAD
layer) to facilitate later removal.

8.17 Column Grid Identification

Reference Grid Symbols for Structural Columns - Figure 8.6
Column letters shall be designated from south to north when northings are being used, (or the reverse
if southings are being used).
Column numbers shall be designated from west to east when eastings are being used, (or the reverse if
westings are being used).
If a new column is created between an already established grid, it shall be given a number in
proportion to its distance along, i.e. if it is approximately two thirds along, .7 is added. Hence a new
column centrally located between grid lines 1 and 2, becomes 1.5, between grid lines C and D
becomes C.5.

8.18 Clouds
Cloud Symbols for Revisions and Holds - Figure 8.7
All revisions shall be clearly identified by the use of clouds, which shall be drawn on the back of the
drawing sheet (or on a separate 2D-CAD layer in 0.7 pen) to facilitate later removal. The clouds shall
be drawn to highlight the item that has been revised and shall not be drawn around significant
unchanged areas of the drawing.
All `HOLDS' shall be clearly identified by the use of inverted cloud symbols in the same way as for
clouds together with the revision triangle touching the inside of the cloud.
Project drawings taken as copies of existing drawings will need to have clouds added to the drawing to
indicate the scope of work for the current project. To ensure that the cloud added to the drawing at any
particular revision is identifiable, the revision triangle that depicts the clouds revision shall be inserted
so as to be inside and touching the appropriate cloud.

Procedure

The 4 digit sequential number shall be used to group different types of drawings in logical project
development sequence.
The first digit can be used to identify plant location.

10 DESIGN VERIFICATION

10.1 Design Verification

It is essential that the designs produced by Worley are fit for purpose and that the information included
in the final design is traceable throughout the design process. This requires that the design activity at
each stage of project development has the correct and complete input information, is carried out in
accordance with the appropriate procedures, has been independently checked after completion, and has
been reviewed and approved prior to final issue.
Drawings that are not formally issued but are handed to any 3rd party shall be stamped (Uncontrolled -
For Information Only).
Specific drawing check lists are included as attachments to this procedure.

10.2 Self Checking By Drawing Originator

Prior to presenting a drawing for checking, the drawing originator shall perform a self check to ensure
that all the considerations identified under design checking responsibilities have been carried out.
The check print has been stamped ready for design and engineering checking.

10.3 Design Checking

The Lead Discipline Designer shall prepare all checking reference material necessary for the check.
The responsibility of the design checker is as follows:
• To be familiar with the design job book, design criteria and appropriate company and client
standards prior to starting the check
• Conformance with the requirements of approved conceptual layouts
• The completeness and dimensional accuracy of the drawing
• Conformance with P&ID’s and all change requests
• Conformance with certified vendor data
• Conformance with approved squad check comments
• Acceptability of presentation
• Correctly cross-referenced
The checker is not responsible for the design or arrangement, except to ensure that it is fit for purpose.
The checker shall not become involved in any major design or redesign activity, unless specifically

requested to do so by the Lead Designer. Any work performed on this basis will require further
independent checking.

10.4 Engineering Checking

The Lead Discipline Engineer shall prepare all checking reference material necessary for the check.
The responsibility of the engineering checker is as follows:
• To be familiar with the design job book, design criteria and appropriate company and client
standards prior to starting the check
• Conformance with engineering criteria and codes
• Conformance with engineering specifications
• Conformance with engineering calculations

10.5 Squad Checking

A squad check is only required for drawings where a significant interface exists between different
disciplines. The project manager shall include the squad checking requirements of each type of
document into the distribution matrix at the start of a project.
The Lead Discipline Engineer and Designer is responsible to ensure that all appropriate documentation
is squad checked in accordance with the project distribution matrix prior to commencement of design
and engineering checking.
The correct colour code shall be use to mark the drawings and the originators initials shall be placed
against each comment.
Squad check prints shall be pink and will have the official distribution form attached.
The responsibility of the squad checker is as follows:
• To ensure the interface between theirs and the incoming disciplines document is correct
• To highlight potential cost savings and improvements to the project
• Highlight errors
• To pick up project instructions missing from the design
• Ensure equipment interfaces are correct ( Prime Engineers responsibility )
Squad check review meetings may be required to analyse and agree comments that are to be included
into the design.

10.6 Colour Code

The following colour code shall be used for all document & drawing mark-ups, including check prints,
squad checks and mark-ups for secretarial typing:

• The checker shall use the following colours:

Yellow Use to indicate approval as shown
Blue Use to indicate removal from drawing
Red Use for additions to drawing
Orange Used to confirm backdrafters work
Black Use for calculations non-record comments & instruction notes to backdrafter
Pink Use to highlight to back drafter missed back drafting for rework
• The backdrafter shall use the following colours to mark check prints:
Green Use to verify that the back drafting has been done
Black Use for notes back to checker
On completion of the check, the checker shall sign, date and return the drawing to the Lead Designer
for back drafting. When the drawing has been back drafted to the checker's satisfaction, the checker
shall sign and date the original and return it to the Lead Designer. In the case of CAD drawings the
plot that is signed by the checker is the `wet' original. The drawing is now ready for approval
signatures.

10.7 Documentation Review

The checking activity will have been completed prior to documentation review.
After the documentation has been checked, it may be subjected to corporate discipline review or
review by the Design Drafting Manager & or Q.A. Manager. The design may be reviewed to ensure
that it is sensible, has been subjected to the necessary analysis (e.g. pipe stress analysis for piping
design) and is complete and professionally presented. In addition, spot checks may be carried out to
confirm the accuracy of the design.

10.8 Project Approvals

The project approval is not a second checking activity. The items specified as the responsibility of the
checker do not require, and will not receive, further review by the approver, except on a spot check
basis. The approver is not expected to conduct a detailed check of every step of the work. However,
the approver will have a full grasp of the problems and methods involved, the steps taken to resolve
them, and the results produced. The approver will also ensure that the design is sensible, has been
subjected to the necessary analytical examination (e.g. stress analysis for piping design) and that the
design is complete and professionally presented.
The approver shall sign and date the drawing in the box provided in the title block. On "wet" originals
all approval signatures shall be made in blue ink, to ensure that the "wet" original can be distinguished
from any print copies.

11 FROZEN DRAWING STATUS

At project start-up certain documents nominated by the Project Manager will be classified as ‘Key’
documents e.g. P&ID’s, Plot Plans, Equipment Lists and Planning Studies. Once a ‘Key’ document
has progressed through preliminary design it shall be frozen for detailed design to allow controlled
continuation of the detail design phase of the project.
The lead discipline designer shall stamp the master drawing frozen for design.
From this point, revisions to a frozen drawing shall be authorised only under an approved change
request.

12 REVISIONS TO DRAWINGS
The revision triangle shall be a 10 mm sided equilateral triangle with 3mm lettering.
Where a revision is required to a drawing, the Lead Designer shall ensure that the revisions made are
subjected to the same production method, checking, review and approvals procedures as for the
original drawing. This is to prevent the occurrence of two copies of an engineering document being
issued under the same revision number, although they are not identical, and to eliminate the possibility
of the first issue of a document being sent to the Client in place of a revised copy.
To assist with the identification of revision currency all drawings must have date and time displayed
on the bottom left hand side and drawings shall be processed and placed in the history file in date/time
order to enable traceability when audited.
The status of each pre IFC revision shall be clearly indicated in the formal revision box of the
drawing. These shall remain for all future issues prior to IFC revision 0.

Issued for construction issues shall be made only when a drawing is complete, checked and approved
by the discipline Lead, Project Engineer and or the Project Manager. The drawing shall be marked "0"
and "Issued for Construction" shall be shown in the revision box with all the previous preliminary (A,
B, C...) issues removed.
If a drawing is required to be issued again under the same revision description due to late information
being identified or an error being found, then the term “ Re- “ shall be placed in front of the
description.
Demolition drawings shall hold the same drawing number and revision status as the drawing that
depicts the modified or new project work, but shall have the letter “ R “ added as a prefix to the
revision number i.e. RA, R0, R1 etc.
Cancelled drawings: Drawings that have been issued and subsequently become redundant or obsolete
shall be formally cancelled.
Cancelled shall be indicated by the words “CANCELLED” written in large lettering between two
diagonal parallel lines drawn across the entire drawing face. It is then revised to the next revision
number and formally issued to all previous recipients as “DRAWING CANCELLED”.
Cancelled drawings remain in the drawing register and their drawing numbers are not relocated.
The revision date on the drawing title block shall be denoted by Day, Month and Year, separated by a
forward slash. Single figure days and months shall not be prefixed by zero e.g. 1/1/00 (1st January
2000).
Initials and names on drawing sheets shall not have periods, slashes etc. between them:
SRB Not S.R.B
S Barnett Not S. Barnett
Clouds shall be used to highlight current revisions and holds. Revision triangles may be used for
identification of lines of text, MTO's etc. that have been revised, and the text that has been changed
may be highlighted by a heavy dashed box.
Triangles and clouds indicating the previous revision shall be removed when the drawing is to be
revised and re-issued.
If a drawing is to be redrawn, then the latest revision number only shall appear in the revision box,
described as "Redrawn".
If numerous changes are made on a drawing, the changes shall each be tightly clouded and/or
identified with a revision triangle.
The revision description shall be defined by the lead designer. Special care shall be taken to ensure all
revisions are identified and described (in the revision box) as accurately as possible to avoid potential
contractual implications.

14.4 Layering

14.4.1 General
Layers can be described as the CAD equivalent to multiple sheets of transparent paper laid one over
the other. AutoCAD enables the user to build up a drawing file using a combination of user defined
layers.
Manipulation of these layers can be used to display and plot selected components of a drawing. There
is no practical limit to the number of layers which may be created and used in AutoCAD.
All drawing preparation shall be carried out using the convention of colour and linetype set
BYLAYER unless specific client requirements deem otherwise.
The AutoCAD layer control dialogue box has four identifiers - layer name, state, colour, and
linetype.
All XREF files (i.e. base drawings) must be drawn using colour and linetype bylayer mode.
Refer section 6.4. This method shall be adopted globally for all drafting unless specified
otherwise by client procedures.

14.4.2 Base Layer Setup

The initial set up of the base layer data will be done upon beginning a new drawing. The “Drawing
Type” and “Discipline Code” automatically set the base layer colour and linetype. Refer section 5.3.1
and Fig. 5.4.

14.4.3 Layer Naming Convention

The layer naming convention shall allow a consistent approach to be taken to the identification of
additional layers. This will allow the type of information stored on the layer to be determined from
the layer name.
A maximum of 31 characters may be used in making up layer names.
The layer naming convention will be as follows:
Layer Name = “User Defined_”+“Drawing Type” + “Discipline Code”+“Drawing Entity”
+ “Colour” + “Line Type
eg. STEEL_AAL1A
All naming convention codes following the underscore are automatically generated.
The components which make up the layer name are as follows:
• User Defined
The first component of the layer name shall be user defined.
For an explanation of how to set USER specific layer names refer section 5.4.4.
• Drawing Type
The second component of the layer name is one character long and is the automatically generated
abbreviation of the drawing type. The drawing types are:
A Area/Location Plan
D Detail Drawing
G General Arrangement
L Line Diagram (for Diagrammatic drawings - ie. SLD, P&ID, Schematics etc.)
• Discipline Code
The third component of the layer name is a one character long and is the automatically generated
abbreviation of the discipline code. The discipline codes are:
A Architectural
C Civil, Earthworks
D Piping and Instrument Diagram
E Electrical
I Instrumentation

14.4.4 Setting User Layers

It is possible to define USER LAYERS and group entities under common layer names.
The USER LAYER name shall only be used where logically linked entities are concerned and
shall be ignored where group specific information is not required.
USER LAYER names shall be descriptive and kept as brief as possible. Use a maximum of 10
characters where possible. For Equipment Layout Drawings the user defined layer shall be used to
identify individual items of equipment and shall be made up of the designated equipment tag number.
The USER LAYER name is set via the “USER LAYER - MAKE” button on the tablet, (location Y10,
Y11) which, when selected displays to the user a “SET USER LAYER” dialogue. Refer Fig. 5.7.
The user shall select “SET LAYER NAME” space on the dialogue and enter the required user name
and select “OK” or return to continue and record the entered name into the layer drawings layer table.

Fig. 5.7: SET USER LAYER DIALOGUE

The user layer name is now active and can be accessed via the “USER LAYER ON\OFF” toggle,
(location X10, X11) on the tablet. The user should select the toggle to set USER LAYER on, (Status
is displayed at the top of the screen), and then proceed to draw the linework required.
The layer name status at the top of the screen will update to display the user layer name prefixed to the
current base layer name for the linework being drawn.
The USER LAYER name may be reset to any previously entered USER LAYER name by picking the
“USER LAYER - MAKE” button on the tablet and scrolling through the layer names listed in the
displayed dialogue. Select the USER LAYER name required and then “OK” or return to continue.
The USER LAYER function may be toggled on and off at any time as required. Toggling the USER
LAYER name to “OFF” sets the layer naming convention back to the base layer naming mode.
The USER LAYER name will remain at the set or selected name until either a new name is entered or
a previous name is selected for use.

15 DRAWING PREPARATION

15.1 CAD Drafting Standards

15.1.1 General
Standard drafting conventions shall be followed to enable a consistent standard of presentation for all
Project Drawings.
These are as follows:
• Drawings for projects shall use the Standard client specific Title Block Formats.
• The Group’s logo shall not be made a permanent part of a client specific Drawing Sheet.
• Logos shall be a separate block or XREF that can be removed from the drawing for project drawing
purposes.
• All drawings shall be purged of unnecessary entities or use AcadPurge from the front end menu.
• The use of the WBLOCK command as a alternative to purging shall be avoided as WBLOCKING
of a drawing loses the information on frozen and turned off layers.
• Exploded attributes shall not be used on any drawing.
• Hatching shall not be exploded. Hatching scales shall be kept standard. All hatching shall reflect
Australian Standard designation.
• All text and attributes shall be of the style named ISO3098B using the font file ISO3098B.SHX
with a height factor of 0.0 (zero) and a width factor of 1.0 (one). Text sizes shall be 2.5 mm
(minimum), 3.5 mm, 5.0 mm, 7.0 mm as specified by AS-1100. No other fonts shall be used,
unless approved by the (CAD Co-ordinator), when deemed necessary.
• Standard snaps for all electrical, instrument and P&ID drawings shall be 1.25, 2.5 and 5.0. Blocks
shall be created in relation to these snaps.
• The Ortho command for electrical, instrument and P&ID drawings should default to on. The
command shall only be turned off for the rare occasions when a non horizontal or non vertical line
is required.
• Associative dimensioning shall be used for dimensioning.
• Dimensioning shall not be exploded.
• All model space entities shall be drawn in real world units.
• The only entities allowed outside the limits of the Title Sheet border shall be the date tag and the
drawing file name.
• All drawings to be zoomed to extents before issue.
• All AutoCAD prepared drawings shall be stored on the central file server. The directory for
storage of drawing files will be created at the commencement of the project by the CAD Co-
ordinator.

15.2 Linetypes and Colours

15.2.1 General
The colour standard for lineweighting shall be in accordance with the ISO pen colour standards as
follows:
Grey (9) = 0.18 mm Line Thickness
White (7) = 0.25 mm Line Thickness
Yellow(2) = 0.35 mm Line Thickness
Red (1) = 0.50 mm Line Thickness
Cyan (4) = 0.70 mm Line Thickness
Green (3) = 1.00 mm Line Thickness
When beginning a new drawing, the user defines the type of drawing and the Discipline in the New
Drawing Set dialogue. Refer section 5.3.1. and Fig. 5.4. These selections automatically set the colour
and pen definitions for the drawings. The variables that control the lineweights and colours are then
stored as fixed data within the drawing file.

15.2.2 Text
All text shall be composed using the AutoCAD font style ISO3098B. No special text fonts will be
used unless specifically specified by the client and approved by the Drafting Co-ordinator.
Where special text fonts are to be used the CAD Co-ordinator will be notified of the intention and
application for use.
The standard text size and line weighting, shown below is also automatically set when the user selects
the type of drawing and discipline in the New Drawing Setup dialogue. Refer section 5.3.1 and Fig.
5.4.
White = 0.25 mm Text
Yellow = 0.35 mm Text
Red = 0.50 mm Text
Cyan = 0.70 mm Text

15.3 Blocks and Block Construction

15.3.1 General
Standard drawing blocks shall be used on drawings whenever possible.
These blocks will be accessed from the tablet menu.
A central block library shall be maintained on the central file server under the administrative control of
the CAD Co-ordinator.
A project specific block library will be kept for each project.

005-000-PDM-012 Page 56 of 124

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

The project specific blocks will be kept in a directory called “BLOCKS” under the main project
directory on the central file server. At the end of the project the lead draftsperson shall determine
which, if any, of the blocks will be transferred to the permanent library.

15.3.2 Block Names

Standard blocks shall be named by the Lead Designer using a unique identifier for each block.
Project specific blocks shall be named by the Project Lead Designer, who shall maintain a register of
all project blocks created by each discipline for use within a particular project.
Project specific blocks are to be reviewed at the completion of the project by the Design Drafting
Manager and the CAD Co-ordinator for inclusion into the central block library if deemed suitable.

15.3.3 Block Construction

To maintain maximum effectiveness of layer manipulation all blocks will be created using colour and
linetype bylayer as set out in section 6.2.1 where a fixed pen weight is required.
All new blocks shall be made by layer for colour and line type. The layers are as follows:
2.5 mm Layer Name SYM-PEN4
3.5 mm Layer Name SYM-PEN3
5.0 mm Layer Name SYM-PEN2
7.0 mm Layer Name SYM-PEN1
Alternatively entities that require floating colour or linetype values may be created byblock. Creating
blocks using the byblock method will ensure that at the time of insertion the block will reference the
current layer but not lose the flexibility inherent in the bylayer construction.
All blocks will be created at full size. i.e. 1:1
For entities that have to be determined on insertion shall be set to ‘BY BLOCK’ on a layer called
• SYM_BB.
Where blocks contain attributes and are to be edited using the attribute edit function (attedit) care
should be taken to ensure the attributes properties are changed by layer not by colour.

15.3.4 Project Blocks

Project blocks are to be created using the procedure outlined in section 6.3.3 and approved by the
Project Lead Designer or Discipline Project Section Leader to ensure conformance to layering and
naming conventions and storage requirements.
If the block is to be used extensively during the project it may be more appropriate to insert it into the
required drawings as an “XREF” (refer section 6.4) to cope with any changes which may occur during
the course of the project.
These “XREFs” will be bound to the drawing at project completion.

005-000-PDM-012 Page 57 of 124

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Where the block will only be used on a minimal basis it may be inserted as a “BLOCK” and redefined
after any revision.

15.3.5 User Blocks

These are blocks created by the user which have a one off or specialised application.
These blocks will be created using the method outlined in section 6.3.3 and should be inserted as
blocks into the relevant drawing.
User blocks will be stored on the central file server under MISC in the project directory for use in
future editing sessions.
At the end of a project these shall be reviewed by the Project Lead Designer and if useful added
to the Corporate Library.

15.3.6 Block Inserts

Please note that routines such as section and detail placement, and the title borders use more than one
block to comply with pen weight and entity creation modes.

15.4 External Reference Files

15.4.1 General
Drawings constructed specifically for use as external reference files will be referred to in the
generic term as “Base Drawings”.
Base Drawings will be used at an inter-discipline level to enable any single discipline to access and
use, for reference purposes, the latest Base Drawing information of any other discipline.
Final project drawings, especially general arrangements, will be assembled using the XREF’D base
drawings in Model Space with the final annotations, dimensions etc. being created in the project
drawing itself.
For example: -
A Base Drawing produced by the structural discipline can be referenced (XREF”D) to the base piping
layout to allow piping routing to the latest structural layout.
Similarly the electrical and instrument disciplines will reference to both structural and piping Base
Drawings to allow cable routing and instrument placement using the latest piping and structural
arrangements.
It is anticipated that each discipline will produce a series of working Base Drawings from which the
final project drawings will be assembled and completed for issue.
Drawings to be created using the XREF format system should include, but are not limited to the
following: -
• Equipment Layouts
• Plot Plans

005-000-PDM-012 Page 58 of 124

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

• Discipline Specific General Arrangements where background information from other disciplines is
required to show boundaries and limits of work.
At project completion the project drawings created using XREF base drawings will be “bound”, using
the XREF bind command for handover to the client, unless specified otherwise.

15.4.2 Base Drawing Construction

Base Drawings produced for use as external reference files will be drawn in model space only
(tilemode 1) and at full size i.e. scale 1=1.
These drawings shall only contain the required reference data or drawing outline produced using the
layering principals as outlined in section 5.4 of this procedure.
Title blocks , barscales, dimensions, text or annotations shall not to be used on Base Drawings.
Base drawings may also be created by taking blocks from existing drawings and modifying to suit a
particular project.

15.4.3 Storage of Base Drawings

Base Drawing files are to be stored on the central file server in the relevant project directory.
The file naming convention for the base drawing will consist of two sections.
The first section will be a unique identifier to highlight that the file is a Base Drawing and it is
intended to be used as an external reference file.
The unique identifier will be the letter “X”.
The second section will be an alpha numeric number to distinguish discipline and file number.
i.e. P001 = Discipline: Piping, Base Drawing number: 001. Full XREF file name = XP001
Note: The file name shall not contain any revision number details
The discipline identifier is to be taken from the discipline code used for layer construction. Refer
section 5.4.3.

15.4.4 Revision Of Base Drawings

Before a Base Drawing can be revised a full study of the impact of the revision must be completed to
determine the impact on other drawings that may have the Base Drawing attached as an XREF. No
revision will be made to a Base Drawing without the prior consent of the Project Lead Designer.
If the revision of a Base Drawing will cause change to drawings that have been formally issued,
an engineering change request must be completed and approved prior to any revision being
made. (Refer Worley and Worley ABB Limited Management System Manual).

15.5 Paper Space\Model Space

15.5.1 Setting of Viewports in Paperspace

Viewports shall be created in paperspace on a drawing by drawing basis as required.

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Paperspace viewports shall be placed on the layer “DEFPOINTS" and the layer shall then be frozen.
This will ensure the VPORT border is not plotted with the drawing. No other entities shall be placed
on this layer.
The Visretain variable shall default to 1 to ensure that the layer settings at the close of a drawing are
the same as when the drawing is re-opened. VPLAYER may be used to control visibility across a
number of viewports.

15.5.2 Viewport Scaling

A viewport shall be scaled using the ZOOM XP option. The CVPORT command shall be used to
obtain a viewport number.
The VIEW command can then be used to save these viewport settings.
A routine for determining the scale of a viewport has been provided, named “VPSC”.

15.6 Plotting
All drawings prior to issue are to be A3 size or A1 (A3 Esso Issue) on plain paper using the plotting
facility available on the “Front End” menu.
If plots or prints larger than A3 are required these shall be arranged by the CAD Co-ordinator after
approval form the relevant Project Manager.
To begin plotting select the “CAD PLOTTING” option from the front end menu, then the type of plot
required. Refer Fig. 5.14.

Esso Drawing Naming Procedure for the As-building Register

(1 Page)

005-000-PDM-012 Page 120 of 126

Rev 3 \\worley\mel\public\saifon\005-000-pdm-012.doc\lkm
Melbourne Office General
Design & Drafting
Procedure

Drawing and Naming Procedure for The As-building Drawing Register.

• There will be only one register per project for As-building. Except where there are work packs
(PDM’s)
• With only one Esso drawing number allocated.
• This will be a multidiscipline register.
• If you have work packs (PDM’s), then each work pack will have a separate register and be
allocated an Esso drawing number. This will also be multidiscipline.
• This register will always be located directly under 10_engineer in the file structure.
• Once a project is ready to As-build, a request will be made for an Esso drawing number via
EDID.
• This will then be saved in the following format:

DOC_REG_WXXXX_ASBUILD_ESSO DRAWING NUMBER_REV.

ie. DOC_REG_W1234_ASBUILD_010-5678_01.
• WXXXX being the Worley job number.
• Other disciplines should be notified of this when established.
• This is now a new register used for As-building and each discipline is to input the relevant As-
built drawings for issue to Esso at revision 01.
• It is an Esso requirement to retain the revision 0 information in the title block. This being a
new register, the revision 0 information. (ie. Issued for construction) will have to be reinstated
only in the title block.
• The previous JX, MX, PX etc, drawing registers used for each discipline in the construction
phase are now only a reference.
• The register created for As-building is now current, and revised accordingly throughout the
As-building phase.
• Once the register is ready for issue to Esso and a schedule is created, (this is purely the
schedule which is issued to Esso). Move it into the CD directory. There is no need to keep a
copy in the 10_engineer directory.
