Introduction
"The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art!"
Leonardo da vinci, explained the greatness and beauty of the human foot
which initiates the journey to a wonderful life. We all love to have a glowing,
clean and beautiful looking skin in our body. However, foot is one part we
usually ignore taking care off. A simple foot spa at home or a visit to a foot
spa or saloon can do the job. In this current article, we will talk about the
basic procedure of foot spa, know about the essential tools and equipments
used in foot spa and also talk about how to make foot spa at home along
with the wonderful benefits of foot spa.

Use of Tools, Supplies and Materials

TOOLS - referred to as implements that are durable, permanent and are

hand-held.
1. Callous Remover - refers to a tool designed to strip off calluses and
corns.
2. Foot file - refers to a metal or sandpaper, with a rough file on one side to
remove calluses and a fine file on the other to smoothen the feet.
3. Pumice stone - is used to soften rough areas on the feet such as calluses

Foot Spa Supplies

supplies/materials - are the cosmetics that are consumed and replaced from
time to time. They are also called consumables.
Antiseptic Solution - is an agent that reduces or prevents the multiplication
of microorganisms.
1. Cling Wrap - is a thin plastic film used for sealing the paraffin during a
foot spa.
2. Foot Blush - contains peppermint and alpha hydroxyl acids derived from
fruits that whisks away dead skin cells, deodorizes and soften the feet,
giving it a pinkish glow after use.
3. Foot Scrub - refers to a mixture of natural ingredients to keep feet soft,

6. Paraffin Wax - refers to a mineral wax derived from petroleum. It is a soft
wax that melts at a temperature cool enough to safely immerse the skin.
Paraffin wax is used as a treatment in spas and salons to lock in
moisture
7. Towel - is an absorbent cloth for drying the hands and feet.

Foot Spa Equipment

Equipment - are the items which are more or less durable and permanent
needed for a particular activity or purpose.
1. Foot Spa Basin is a large rectangular container used for bathing and
soaking the feet
2. Foot Spa Machine is an electronic gadget used to soothe pain of
arthritis, muscle spasms and dry cracked skin of the feet.
3. Foot Spa Stool - refers to a simple seat with three or four legs
designed to provide comfort and elevation during a foot spa
4. Paraffin wax machine - contains a heat source and tank that holds
paraffin wax. The machine melts the wax and maintains it in a liquid
state.

Checking water temperature

Check the water temperature and immerse your feet. Test out
the water before you soak your feet- the temperature should be between 92°
to 100 °F (37.8 °C). Anything above 104° F is considered unsafe, especially
for people with certain conditions, such as poor circulation and pregnancy

Body Temperature
Your body’s like a little furnace. It puts out heat all the time. It comes from your
body doing the work that keeps you alive. When it puts out a lot more or a lot
less heat than usual, it’s trying to tell you there’s a problem.

Normal Range
Not everyone’s “normal” body temperature is the same. Yours could be a whole
degree different than someone else’s. A German doctor in the 19th century set
the standard at 98.6 F, but more recent studies say the baseline for most people
is closer to 98.2 F.
For a typical adult, body temperature can be anywhere from 97 F to 99 F.
Babies and children have a little higher range: 97.9 F to 100.4 F.
Your temperature doesn’t stay same all day, and it will vary throughout your
lifetime, too. Some things that cause your temperature to move around during
the day include:
 How active you are
 What time of day it is
 Your age
 Your sex
 What you’ve eaten or had to drink
 (If you’re a woman) where you are in your menstrual cycle

Your temperature reading changes based on where on your body you
measure it. Underarm readings can be a degree lower than what you’d find
from your mouth. Rectal temperatures usually are up to a degree higher
than mouthreadings.

A body temperature higher than your normal range is a fever.

It’s hypothermiawhen the body temperature dips too low. Both need to be
watched.

Fever
How high is too high when it comes to your temperature? Anything above
100.4 F is considered a fever. You may feel terrible, but on the whole, a fever
isn’t bad for you. It’s a sign your body is doing what it should when germs
invade. It’s fighting them off.
However, if your temperature is 103 F or higher or if you’ve had a fever for
more than 3 days, call your doctor. Also call if you have a fever with
symptoms like severe throat swelling, vomiting, headache, chest pain, stiff
neck or rash.

For children, fevers are a bit more complicated. Call your pediatrician if your
child is:
 Under 3 months and has a rectal temperatures of 100.4 F or higher
 Between 3 months and 3 years and has a rectal temperature over 102
F
 Older than 3 years and has an oral temperatures above 103 F
 Between 3 and 6 months and -- along with a fever -- is fussier or more
uncomfortable than usual, or doesn’t seem alert
 Sick enough for you to be concerned, regardless of what the
thermometer says

Hypothermia
If your body loses too much heat, it can be very serious, even fatal.
Hypothermia is when your body temperature goes below 95 F. You might
think of hypothermia as something that only happens when you’re exposed
to extremely cold weather for a long time. But it happens indoors, too.
Hypothermia is a special concern for newborns and the elderly.

Babies may not be good at regulating their temperature. They can lose heat
quickly. It’s important to keep them warm. A temperature below 97 F is
considered too low for babies.

Older adults can also struggle to keep their body temperature in a normal
range if they’re somewhere with intense air conditioning or there’s not
enough heat.

For both the elderly and young children, a below-normal body temperature
can be a sign they’re sick.

Other things can also make you more likely to get hypothermia. They
include:
 Alcohol or drug use
 Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid)
 Anorexia
 Stroke
 Sepsis (overwhelming infection)
 Parkinson’s disease
 Nerve damage
 Malnutrition
 Medicines such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, or sedatives
 Anesthesia

Procedure Of Foot Spa And Its Benefits: Taking Care Of Your Feet

What Is Foot Spa:

Foot spa is a relaxing and effective technique that caters with all the
demands of the feet. Primarily the technique involve soaking of the feet in a
foot bath with warm water and added salt and essential oils, scrubbing,
massaging and detoxifying, cleaning and applying foot lotion and finally
applying nail paint to the toe nails. There are foot spa detox machines which
are used in the foot spas or the saloons for detoxifying the body toxins and
increasing energy, stamina and providing relaxation.
Foot spa can be easily made at home that can be done at least once in
two days for the best appearance and health of your feet and body.

Benefits of Foot Spa:

Now, coming to the various benefits of foot spa; here we are with the
following list.
 Foot Spa is beneficial in proper blood circulation: Blood circulation is
improved by a foot spa. It is also known that by taking a foot spa, you
can re-energize self, keep self relaxed and full of life.
 Foot Spa helps in relieving stress: It is known that a foot spa can help
you relieve the stress and tensions of the entire day and make you relax.
 Beneficial in relieving arthritic pain: It is known that foot spa can help
you get rid of the tensions in muscles and joints. So, people suffering
from arthritis can be benefited greatly by foot spa when done in the
morning and evening. The foot spa used to treat patients with arthritis
uses seaweeds which are known to reduce pain and help arthritic
patients.
 Foot Spa helps in reducing headaches: As the nerve points are found in
the feet; a light massage during the foot spa procedure stimulates them
and helps in treating symptoms like headache, migraine etc.
 Foot spa is beneficial in treating acidity and indigestion: Acidity and
indigestion can also be treated by foot spa.
 Beneficial in treating insomnia: Foot spa is known to help in getting
proper sleep and reducing the symptoms of insomnia.

 Foot Spa Helps in detoxification: The foot detoxification in foot spa aids
the body from getting rid of toxins. The foot detoxification helps in
detoxifying the liver and kidney, helps in maintaining pH balance in the
body, aids in clearing acne and wrinkles, strengthening the immune
system etc.

Ion-Cleansing foot detox machine for the foot and foot detox:
This ion-cleansing detox machine for foot is basically used in order to
increase the physical and mental energy, stamina and vitality, to detoxify
the body of toxins, radiations, chemicals and pollution and to internally
cleanse the body of toxins or parasites which in turn reduces inflammation,
enhances memory, reduces headaches, reduces the fluid retention, and
provides many more benefits to the feet and the body.
The basic with which this machine works is that the process uses osmosis
for movement of particles through a membrane from an area of low
concentration to an area of high concentration. The negative ions course
through the body, collecting the toxic substances present and thereby
neutralizing the positive charges.

Ways To Do Foot Spa At Home
"Your feet are precious because they carry you miles in the journey of your
life." You would surely wish to take their very best care on your own. So, do
you want to make foot spa at home? Well! Then here is how you can try out
the foot spa at home in the most simple manner.
Before we talk about the procedure we must let you know that the most
essential part of the foot spa is the essential oil which has anti-inflammatory
properties and actually revitalizes and enhances the circulation of blood in
the feet. You can make use of any essential oil including the jasmine oil,
lavender oil, lemon or peppermint oil. One can also use the sea salt or the
Epsom salt in case essential oils are not available at home. Adding 2-3 tbsp
of milk powder and almond oil will be an added benefit.
So, listing down the ingredients required for the foot spa at home;
Lukewarm water
 Essential oil/Epsom salt
 Foot wash
 Almond oil
 Nail filer, cutter, nail polish remover, nail polish
 Cuticle cream
 Foot scrub or pumice stone
 Foot cream or lotion.

Now, let us come to the steps for making the foot spa at home.
1. Trimming: Trimming is done by the following steps.
 Remove the nail polish(if any) from your toe nails by using a nail
polish remover
 Cut your nails in the required nails
 In order to soften your cuticles, apply a cuticle cream.
 Then, file your nails so as to get the shape you desire for.

2. Foot Soak: Then begins the soaking of your foot. So this goes as
below.
 In a medium size bath tub, put lukewarm water and add your
essential oils to it or 1/2 tbsp of Epsom salt and 3 tbsp of almond oil
to it.
 Next, add the foot wash to it. In case you do not have a foot wash, you
can add shampoo to it. Stir it all well.
 Soak you feet in the tub or the foot bath and relax them for 10
minutes. You can have reduced pain and inflammation. The water
solution also helps in removing the dirt and exfoliating the dead skin
cells from the feet.
 Now, remove your feet from the water and dry it properly.

3. Exfoliation: Exfoliation is required in a foot spa which cleans the

dead cells from the skin on the feet. Follow the steps explained below.
 Using a pumice stone or nail file, exfoliate your heels, ankles, and side
of the heel gently.

 Now, using a foot scrub massage gently for 5-8 minutes over the
heels, ankles, soles etc. You can also use a facial or body scrub in
case foot scrub is not available with you.
 Make sure you are gently scrubbing using circular motion over the
feet.

4. Moisturization and massaging: Moisturizing the foot is essential

once exfoliation is completed. So, remove the feet from the tub or the
foot bath and properly wipe them off with a towel.
 Using a foot moisturizing cream, massage the feet gently for 5-10
minutes.

5. Application of Nail polish: Finally, apply the nail polish on your feet
toenails and allow it to dry.
 You need to wear socks for protecting the feet from dirt and germs
after the foot spa is done.

Special Precautions While Doing Foot Spa at Home:

 Make sure you check the hotness of the water in your tub before
soaking your foot in it. It may hurt your skin if the water is extremely
hot. The foot soak must be done in lukewarm water.
 There are chances some lotion may irritate your skin. So have a check
on the foot lotion before using it.

Conclusion:
So, now that we are known to the basic procedure of foot spa and the steps
for doing foot spa at home, why not treat your feet to their best and serve
them up for taking the most wonderful steps of your life?
"May your feet take you where you want to go!"

Working to prevent risks can turn out to be a good strategy. According to the
Swedish Work Environment Authority*, during 2014 over 1,000 work
injuries were caused by chemical/biological substances.

Illness among the staff increases the costs for an organisation. When the
Swedish Work Environment Authority conducted a project in 2003 and
checked 1,800 workplaces, they found that two out of three were deficient in
their chemical checks. This is an alarmingly high proportion. Also, accidents
in which chemicals are leaked into the environment can have considerable
consequences for a company, not least of which is that they lose trust
capital.

Here are some ground rules that can be useful to have while at work to
ensure safe handling of chemicals:
 Keep track of which chemicals are being used in the business. Keep a
list of the substances, the amounts being used and the risks
associated with them. You can read more in Taking inventory.
 This also applies to gathering information and distributing it to those
who need it. Current safety data sheets are one condition. Read more
in Safety data sheets. There may be a need for special instructions
and training to assure safe handling. Read more in Responsibility and
training. To understand the risks it is often necessary to carry out an
overall risk analysis. In the introduction Risk analysis there is more to
read about this.
 Storing and using chemicals in a safe way is a further foundation for
working with chemicals. This introduction deals with this.
 In continuing risk reduction work it is necessary to decide whether a
particular chemical is really needed. In many cases there can be
another substance that is less hazardous to health and the
environment, or perhaps a different method, see more under
substitution. Purchasing of chemical substances therefore requires
special procedures, read more in Purchasing.
Things to remember when storing, labelling, handling and personal
hygiene
Storage
 All chemical products must be stored and labelled in accordance with
the instructions on the safety sheet.
 Chemicals must not be stored together with inflammable material and
gas cylinders.
 Do not store acids and alkalis together.
 Do not store strong acids and organic substances together.
 Do not store strongly oxidising substances together with oxidisable
substances.
 Ethers and other peroxide-building substances must be stored in the
dark and cool, in tightly sealed containers.
 Chemical containers must be stored with closed lids when they are
not being used.
 Refrigerators and freezers for storage of chemicals must be of such a
type that is specially made for this purpose. Chemicals and similar
items must not be stored in refrigerators or freezers that are intended
to store food.
 Chemical stores must not have open floor drains. If there is a floor
drain, it must be equipped with protection to prevent leakage. This
means for example tight fitting lids, a manual opening and closing
function in the drain or other comparable arrangement.
 Equipment for handling and cleaning up spillage must be in readiness
and suitable for the chemicals that are stored. It is suitable to have
equipment placed outside the chemical store.

 It is important for the fire classification of storage lockers and rooms
to match the types and amounts of chemicals stored therein.
 Combustible material must be stored in fireproof cupboards or in
separate spaces.
Labelling
 Chemicals must normally be stored in their original packaging. If you
need smaller amounts of a chemical, the new packaging must be
suitable for the substance. Labelling must be in accordance with the
original packaging. It must always be possible to know what
substance the packaging contains and what risks there may be.
Handling of chemicals
 Always read the safety data sheet and the text on the packaging
carefully when you are about to use a product with which you are not
completely familiar with the risks. Contact the environmental co-
ordinator if you are unsure about handling methods.
 Use personal protection equipment (e.g. gloves, face mask) where
necessary.
 Surplus chemicals and hazardous waste must be dealt with in
accordance with the information in the safety data sheet.
 First Aid equipment must be available.
 Workplaces must be cleaned regularly. There must not be chemical
spills on the floor.
Personal hygiene
 Smoking is forbidden in the factory area outside specially assigned
smoking areas. If you smoke, remember to wash your hands before
lighting up a cigarette. Otherwise chemical substances can be
transferred by skin contact or breathed in.
 Immediately wash off chemical traces from the skin. Read the safety
data sheet or ask your immediate superior if you are not sure what
needs to be done.
 Food products must not be stored or eaten in premises where
chemicals are handled.
 Work clothes must be kept clean. If you have been in contact with
chemicals, take a shower before you go home.
Some rules concerning handling chemicals
 In accordance with the product choice or substitution principle such
chemicals that can be replaced by those that are less hazardous
should be avoided (The Environmental Code part 2 section 4§).
 Chemical products that are hazardous to health or are inflammable
must be listed. (The National Swedish Board of Occupational Safety
and Health regulations (2000:4) concerning Chemical risks to the
working environment).
 There must be a safety data sheet for every chemical products that is
hazardous to health or environment or is inflammable. (Regulation
(EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of

18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation,
Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH), article 31.)
 The risks associated with the use of chemicals must be continuously
examined, assessed and minimised, in accordance with the Ordinance
(1998:901) on operator's control. Refer also to operator's control in the
Environmental Code (part 26 section 19 §). The results must be
documented. The regulations apply to permit and notification
requirements in the case of environmentally hazardous activities
Positioning clients (Ergonomics)
Leaning over a work table for a long time; repetitive movements like filing
and buffing nails; and resting hands, wrists, and forearms and/or elbows
against hard surfaces or sharp edges of work tables are common causes of
injury to workers' muscles, bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and nerves.
These common causes are often called ergonomic hazards and can lead to
aches and pains that workers may feel while at work or at
home. Ergonomics is the study of the work environment to make work more
comfortable and efficient. Good ergonomic practices can reduce stress to the
body and avoid hazards that may cause aches and pains.
Steps to Reduce Ergonomic Hazards
Use an adjustable chair that gives proper back support and can be raised
and lowered. Position the body so that feet stay flat on the floor and use a
footrest if needed.

front edge of the seat to help ensure proper blood flow to the legs.
Adjust the lighting to see without bending over a work table.
Raise and position the client's hand or foot to avoid bending over.
Avoid resting hands, wrists, forearms, and elbows against hard and/or
sharp edges of work tables.
Put a towel or foam pad on the work table edge for a softer surface for the
arms.
Put soft pads on tool handles to make them larger and easier to hold.
Take frequent breaks if possible. Changing positions and doing a different
task is also helpful.
Pace the work. When working too fast, the body can become tense, which
could cause muscle pain.
Do gentle stretching exercises in between sessions with clients to relax and
give muscles and joints a chance to move.
