Lesson Plan

Grade/Subject: Math Unit: Adding and Subtracting to 12 Lesson Duration: 50 min

Overview of lesson:

In this lesson, students will continue to practice identifying ways to make 10. There are two songs we will
use to help remember this. We will create an anchor chart as a group for future reference. Students will also
be able to play a game to apply this skill.

General Learning Outcomes:


Develop number sense.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

8. Identify the number, up to 20, that is:


• one more
• two more
• one less
• two less
than a given number.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Be familiar with numbers 1-10
2. Identify ways to make 10 (ex. The “friends of 10”)
3. Understand that there’s more than one way to make 10

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
* Projector
* Large charting paper
* Markers
* Paper clip
* Colored chips
* 10 copies of “Spin to 10” game

PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):

- While students are seated at their desk, review what we learned yesterday
- “What did we do in math yesterday?”
- “Is there only one way we can break 10 up?”
- Play “Friends of 10” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0bKIeYdvCc (2:50)

Body (30 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Friends of 10 anchor chart (10 min)
- Have students sit on the rug
- Create the “Friends of 10” anchor chart as a class

Learning Activity #2: Numbers of 10 song (2 min)


- Have students stand up and stretch
- Play “numbers to 10” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlE7wZRf7M8 (1:48)
o Tune of Frere Jacques- sing and act along!!

Learning Activity #3: Spin to 10 (15-18 min)


- Have students work in pairs with an elbow partner at their table
- Each student will need colored chips
- Each pair will need 1 paper clip
- How to play: hold the paper clip in the center of the spinner with the tip of a pencil. Spin the paper clip. Place
a colored chip on the number on the chart that’s a friend of 10. Whoever gets 5 in a row wins.

Closure (10 min.):


- Ask for 10 students to come to the front of the room
- Have the seated students find ways to break them into 2 groups
- Get ready for recess
