Denpasar city is located between 08 ° 35 "31'08 ° 44 '49' south latitude and 115
° 10" 23'-115 ° 16 "27 'east longitude. Denpasar City area is 12.778 ha, 2.18% of the
total land area of Bali province. It is divided into four sub-districts, North, East, South,
and West Denpasar. The area of each sub district is showed by the following table:

Sub District Area of Sub District

North Denpasar 3,112 ha
South Denpasar 2,413 ha
East Denpasar 2,254 ha
West Denpasar 4,999 ha
Total Area of Denpasar City 12,778 ha

The largest of sub-districts is South Denpasar, followed successively by the

Northern, West and East Denpasar. The land use is consisting of wetland
covering 2,717 ha. and dry land 10 051 ha. Dry land consists of 7,831 ha. yard
land, dry land 396 ha, pond/pool 10 ha, not cultivated 81 ha., 613 ha of forest,
35 ha of plantation and others is 1,162 ha. The topography of the city of
Denpasar is generally skewed towards the south with a height ranging from 0-
75m above sea level.

B. TOTAL POPULATION IN DENPASAR CITY

Based on BPS-Statistics of Denpasar City total amount of population in each
district is showed by the following table:
Sub District 2017 2018 2019

C. RAINFALL INTENSITY IN DENPASAR CITY

Rainfall intensity is the amount of rainfall that is expressed in terms of
rainfall height or volume of rain per unit time. The amount of rainfall intensity
varies, depending on the length of rainfall and the frequency of occurrence.
Rainfall intensity in Denpasar city is showed by following table:
Month Average (mm)
January 383.2
February 297.1
March 227.7
April 152.2
May 87.1
June 45.8
July 31.9
August 13.1
September 42.4
October 94.1
November 214.7
December 336.5

D. WATER SUPPLY IN DENPASAR CITY
Water supply is a process or activity of supplying water for use in
households, industries or businesses. Rainwater is a source of water supply.
The amount of water supply in certain area is obtained by:

Total Average Rainfall Intensity in a Year x Area of Selected City

Based on the data, we have total rainfall intensity in year 2017. The
total amount is in millimeters so we should convert it into meters.

Total Average Rainfall Intensity in a Year = 1,925.8 mm

1925.8
= 1000

= 1.9258 meters

Area of selected city = 12,778 ha

= 12,778 x 10,000

= 127,780,000 m2

So, the amount of water supply can be obtained by:

Total Average Rainfall Intensity in a Year x Area of Selected City

= 1.925 x 127780000

= 246,078,724 m3

E. WATER DEMAND IN DENPASAR CITY

The calculation of water demand has been regulated in the Minister
of Environment Regulation number 17 of 2009 concerning Guidelines for
Determining the Carrying Capacity of the Environment in Regional Spatial
Planning in Chapter IV. The formula is showed as follows:
DA = N x KHLA

where:
DA = Total water demand
N = Total population
KHLA = Water needs for decent living
= 1,600m3/capita/year (has been regulated in
sub chapter about water demand)
Source: Regulation number 17 of 2009 concerning Guidelines for Determining
the Carrying Capacity of the Environment in Regional Spatial Planning

Since the rainfall intensity is in year 2017, we use total population in 2017
in calculation. Therefore, the calculation becomes:

DA = N x KHLA

DA = 1,381,000 x 1600 m3/capita/year

DA = 2,209,600,000 m3/capita/year

F. DETERMINATION OF WATER CARRYING CAPACITY STATUS

Water carrying capacity is obtained from a comparison between
water supply (SA) and water demand (DA).
If Supply > Demand, water carrying capacity is declared surplus.
If Supply < Demand, water carrying capacity is declared deficit
or exceeded.

After doing the calculation it is obtain that:

246,078,724 m3 < 2,209,600,000 m3/capita/year

Water Supply < Water Demand

Because water supply is less than water demand, the water

carrying capacity status in Denpasar City by 2017 is categorized in deficit
status. It can be concluded that the availability of water in the city of
Denpasar in 2017 cannot fulfill the water needs for total population in
Denpasar City.
