Assistive Technology Lesson Plan

December 13th, 2019

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson plan is to include assistive technology and resources for
students with different educational needs, learning styles, and general learning needs to
personalize and differentiate learning activities.

Age Group: High school students

Description:

Although I have not taught in a classroom yet, I would like to work with high school aged
students. I would use adaptive technologies and other digital resources to personalize
differentiate learning activities for students with special needs and/or learning style preferences,
as well as the general population of students by first getting to know my students. If students
were unsure of their learning styles, I would ask them to take a quiz on learning styles; like the
free online quiz from https://www.how-to-study.com/learning-style-assessment/. This quiz has
students answer a series of questions on how they take notes and how they are in their classes.
The assessment also includes tips for studying and note taking based off of the learning style. I
would then collect data from the class to see what types of learners are in the class. Based off of
the data, I would try to incorporate resources and adjust my teaching style to the students’
educational needs. If I had more visual learners for instance, I would also try to integrate more
visual activities/projects into the classroom.

If students have disabilities, I would also have technology and resources for students to
use if they needed it. I love the Comic Ideas for students with special needs. If a student needed
a comic or a drawing where they could point or add something to show how they felt or explain
something, this is a great tool to have. It is also free, which is great for both the school and the
students. There are also other resources available on this website as well for a variety of topics.
An example is if a student is deaf or has hearing loss, a comic can be used to explain how
students can approach a situation. I think this is really helpful because it provides a visual for
students to see and depict how they may approach a situation.

I would also like to have text to speech technology to have for homework or essay
assignments, as well as for activities. This can fit the needs of many students, because it can be
difficult for many students at times to try to sit and type a paper. Text to speech is helpful for
many students because it allows them to speak and sit or stand while they do it. This is very
inclusive because it allows students to hear back what is written. There are free and low cost text
to speech programs that are available for students.

What I also think is really important for students and technology in the classroom is
taking time to work with the students on how to use the technology. This is a constant
process--and not just a once a year lesson. I would take time to work with students on how to use
the different resources, and explain to them how it benefits themselves/fellow students, as well as
how they may use these resources in the future. Lastly, I would also take time to educate students
on topics such as online safety, appropriate use of technology, and foster an environment where
there are resources and technology available to meet the individual educational needs of all the
students in the classroom.

Common Core Standards that I feel that my classroom will meet:

Speaking and Listening Standards 6–12: Comprehension and Collaboration for Grades
9-10

● 2. “Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse media or formats (e.g.,

visually, quantitatively, orally) evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source”
(Common Core Standards).

Speaking and Listening Standards 6–12: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas for Grades
9-10

● 5. “Make strategic use of digital media (e.g., textual, graphical, audio, visual, and
interactive elements) in presentations to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning,
and evidence and to add interest” (Common Core Standards).

Speaking and Listening Standards 6–12: Comprehension and Collaboration for Grades
11-12

● 2. “Integrate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media

(e.g., visually, quantitatively, orally) in order to make informed decisions and solve
problems, evaluating the credibility and accuracy of each source and noting any
discrepancies among the data” (Common Core Standards).
