TUTORIAL 2
1. Corn in Alabama and Tennessee were both found to produce colorless aleurone in corn
seeds. When these two plants were crossed the resulting F1 had Purple Aleurone. When the
F1 was crossed to produce and F2 the results were 270 purple and 210 Colorless aleurone.
2. The following five mothers, (a) through (e), with given phenotypes, each produced one child
whose phenotype is described as to blood group (A,B,O), M or N antigens, and Rh factor. For
each child, select as the father one of the five males whose genotypes are given.

a) Child of Mother (a) = Father __________
3. The trait of medium-sized leaves in iris is determined by the genetic condition PP’.
Plants with large leaves are PP, while plants with small leaves are P’P’. A cross is
made between two plants each with medium-sized leaves. If they produce 80
seedlings, what phenotypes and in what numbers would you expect? What is the
term for this allelic relationship?
4. In the mouse, gene A allows pigmentation to be deposited in the individual coat hairs
while its allele a prevents such deposition of pigment, resulting in an albino. Gene B
gives agouti (wild type fur) while its allele b gives black fur.
a) Diagram the cross between a doubly heterozygous agouti mouse mated with a
doubly homozygous recessive white mouse.
5. Below is a pedigree of a fairly common human hereditary trait where the boxes
represent males and the circles represent females. Shading symbolizes the
abnormal phenotype. Given that one gene pair is involved,
b) Give the genotype of each individual in the pedigree. If more than one
genotypic possibility exists, present all possible alternatives.

6. In a Drosophila experiment, a cross was made between homozygous wild type
females and yellow-bodied males. All of the resulting F1’s were phenotypically wild
type. However, adult flies of the F2 generation (resulting from mating of the F1’s) had
the following characteristics:
a) Is the mutant gene for yellow body recessive or dominant? State which ________
