Review on place value and the relationship of each digit to another digit in a given number.

Ask the pupils the electrical appliances they have at home. Elicit from them which of these consume the most
electricity.
B. Establishing the Purpose of Ask the pupils how much they pay for their monthly electric bill. Get some reactions. How would you help lessen
your electric consumption? Why?
the Lesson (Motivation) Let pupils form a circle.
Let them move clockwise then counterclockwise.
Do the activity a few times.
Present the problem posted in Engage part and give enough time to the pupils to understand the problems.
Mr. Dela Cruz is computing his monthly electrical consumption. Based on his electric bill, last month he was able to
consume 00125 kWh. When he checked his digital electric meter, the reading is 00199 kWh. How many kilowatt-
hours did Mr. Dela Cruz consume this month?
Observe the meter readings below (TG p.302)

C. Presenting Examples/
Instances of the New Lesson
(Demonstration / Modeling)
(Constructivism/ Collaborative)

For us to get the amount of electricity that Mr. Dela Cruz consumed, subtract the previous electric meter reading
from the present electric meter reading.
00199-00125=74 kWh
So, Mr. Dela Cruz consumed 74 kWh of electricity for this month.
Explain the steps in reading electric
meter. (Mathletes txbk p. 303)

How do you read the dials of a meter?
To read correctly:
Read the dials from left to right.
If the pointer is between the two numbers, always take the lower number.
If the pointer is directly over a number, write down that one.

Mechanics:
1)Form 4 groups of equal number.
2)The teacher gives a number.
A. Reviewing Previous Lesson or Ex.: I am number 8.
Presenting the New Lesson Name my parents by using any of the 4 processes.
(Introductory Activity / Energizer) 3)The teacher gives the condition e.g. – I’ll count 1 to 10 when I reach 10 everybody stops. Some pupils acts as
observer – as to which group did it fast.
4)The game starts with pupil 1. He writes his answer on the board, gives the chalk to the next child, and goes at
the back. This continues until everyone in the group has given his answer.
B.Use flash cards – Review on Subtraction

1) Ask how many of the pupils have faucets?

B. Establishing the Purpose of 2) Do you think water is important? Explain.
3) Can you save water? How?
the Lesson (Motivation) Why is it necessary for us to save water?

The older style of water meters are those with small dials. It looks like a series of small clocks that turn clockwise
(see picture below). The unit we use for his measurement is cubic meters (m3). The rules of reading a water meter
with dials are similar to the way an electric meter is being read.
(Discuss how to read water meter on page 305)
Discuss Example #4: Read and interpret the dials on the meter below. The rightmost dial has the highest value.
C. Presenting Examples/
Instances of the New Lesson
(Demonstration / Modeling)
(Constructivism/ Collaborative)
To get the exact meter reading, start from right to left or the highest numbered dial (clockwise)

So, the water meter shows 3518

Today, most households use a water meter with odometer to measure the amount of water consumption. (See
picture below)

Like in the electricity, the water consumed is also measured by a meter and is expressed in cubic meters.
The water meter is not the same as the electric meter. It is a digital meter that shows 7 digits. The last three
digits at the right form the decimal or fractional part when measuring the amount of water consumed.

D. Discussing New Concepts and

Practicing New Skills (Analysis)
To get the actual reading in cubic meters, multiply the
numbers that appears by 1/1000 or 0.001.
1 m³ = 1000 L
So the number of cubic meters consumed based on the given water meter above is 0.592 m³ or 592 L.
Group Activity:
Give the readings on these water meters.
1. 0 0 0 0 0 7 9 ______________
2. 0 0 0 2 6 5 2 ______________
Answer:
1. 0 0 0 0 0 7 9 0.079 m³ or 79 Liters
2. 0 0 0 2 6 5 2 2.652 m³ or 2 652 Liters
To compute the water consumption for a particular period of time, simply subtract the previous reading from the
present reading.
Example:
The Paz family consumed 0.972 m³ of water last month and 10.965 m³ this month. How many cubic meters of
water did they consume?
Present Reading: 10.865 m³
Previous Reading: 0.972 m³
Water Consumed: 9.893 m³

The Paz family consumed 9.893 m³ of water this month

A. Reviewing Previous Lesson or In what month does your electric and water bill rise up?
Presenting the New Lesson How can you minimize the use of electric and water consumption?
Why do we need to conserve energy?
(Introductory Activity / Energizer)
Present sample problems involving electric and water consumption:
Divide the class into four groups. Let each group create a problem based on the given situations.
Guide and assist the pupils when doing the activity. Ask each group to show its work and to explain its output.
Problem 1:
The electric meter reading last month was 7,621 kwh. The present reading is 8,347 kwh.
Problem 2:
B. Establishing the Purpose of Mrs. Ramos water bill shows that the present reading is 0.749m³ and the previous reading was 0.694 m³.
Possible answer:
