DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title: Winter Night Grade Level: Kindergarten

S & S Statements:
Students will reflect on how their natural surroundings look during the winter season at night. This is
important at this time because it is currently winter and by making this reflection they can identify the
difference compared to other seasons. They will use their imagination to do so. Then they will use
those images to scratch away a high contrast scene showing light and dark(reductive
drawing/sgraffito).

Concepts and Skills being able to use their imagination to visualize what things look like in the dark
and understand what contrast is. The skill will be scratching away the black paint.

Academic Language:
Sgraffito and contrast

Purpose of Lesson (Overall Lesson Objective):

Given poster board, crayons, black paint, and scratching tool students will demonstrate
contrasting colors through scratching a winter scene out without scratching too much of the
black paint layer away.

Learning Objectives (List National Standard(s):

The amount of paint scratched away and clear contrast of crayon under black paint.

Critical Comments and Reflections:
(Problems, successes, differentiated learners, and what to think about for next lesson)
Overall students enjoyed the activity. As expected not everything went as planned. I ended up not
using the “Flashlight” book because of time, so I skipped that activity. The most difficult aspect for
me was time management. Many students finished before the rest so I didn’t know what exactly to
do with them while they waited for everyone to be ready. Having enough time for clean up was also
a bit more difficult than expected. Also, keeping the students under control. They were very excited
to do the activities so it was challenging to get them to focus on my instruction. Mrs. Cox suggested
that I can do things such as 123 eyes on me or clapping a rhythm then saying eyes on me. So I plan
on using that in the next lesson. Another thing with them calming down was when one specific
student would be misbehaving or talking was that I had to wait until they stopped on their own
because I did not know their names yet. I would then ask their name and tell them we won’t move on
until their quiet. It was mostly affective. Yet, when I began talking they would start again so I would
have to stop once more. So next time I will have to be more stern. There were also a couple of
students that stood out to me as requiring extra help. One was Michael who had difficulty focusing
and coloring on the base. He seemed very discouraged during the coloring activity and the
scratching section. I really had to motivate him to continue and complete his work. I made sure to
give recognition that he completed activity. Mrs. Cox was actually surprised that he finished. There
was also a girl named Brooklyn who seemed sleep deprived who was having trouble with
completing her coloring. I ended up demonstrating for her again on her paper on a way to it quickly.
So those are the two students that I will need to provide extra help to during future lessons. I really
enjoyed my first lesson and I look forward to the next lesson.
