Tech-tility
The space between the

Textiles are influenced by nature and digital

skewed, off-kilter take on reality

Tech-tility
The space between the real and the virtual

Distinctions around real and virtual, authentic and fake, and

truth and fantasy are blurring. Tech-tility explores how
interiors will inhabit the space in between.

As we spend more time interacting through screens, it’s

becoming harder to tell what is real and what is digital –
and we are caring less about the distinction. Studios such
as The Fabricant, for example, are creating digital
visualisations as an alternative to photo shoots, with the
added bonus that they can go beyond physical limits to
create seemingly impossible shots.

In this new landscape, prints and patterns will be created

not just for how they look in real life, but also how they
appear on screen. And as technology's influence on
interiors grows, it will also materialise in more tactile ways.
It's time to rethink the rules of what your designs can be.

Action Points
Texture and layering are key in this trend, which where
designs sit somewhere between the natural and fantastical,
incorporating organic elements and metallic finishes.

1. Embrace layering: Layer surface designs and textures

in delicate ways to give textiles an intriguing sense of
depth.

2. Look to nature, then twist it: Nature is a key reference

in this trend, but in a skewed or subverted way. Organic
references are so far removed from their original source
that they become fantastical. Animal skin prints look like
they could have come from mythical beasts.

3. Go 3D, not flat: Use innovative cut piles,

contemporary surface finishes and 3D weaves to create
dimensional textiles with a futuristic look.

4. Make designs pop with metallic and iridescent

surfaces: Explore how metallic and iridescent elements
can be used in new ways. Multicoloured petrol-like
sheens call to mind 1990s two-tone fabrics, and warm-
toned metallics can be layered and distressed to create
tactile furnishing fabrics.
