Note:
For distinguishing between Pillamarudhu and Thani wood which very much
resemble one another, the practical test in field is given below. A chip of Thani
wood if put in the mouth and chewed, it will become powdery quickly. But a
chip pillamarudhu wood, if similarly chewed it will become pilerous and not
powdery as in the case of the former.

ii. Standard specification No.20 - B does not require for the three items of work
detailed above, but does require neat banking in accordance with the standard
specification.
iii. A separate for these 3 items will not be necessary when the work is executed
under the standard specification of 20-A
iv Double the relevant rate for standard specification No.20-B will apply to
excavation in all soils and rock classification given above for foundation of
buildings, abutments, piers, wings and returns of bridges, culverts, sluices,
regulators and cross masonry works, retaining wails, cut off walls and body
walls of anicuts, weirs retaining walls of causeway, road dams, trenches for
water supply and drainage 'works for laying pipes and sewers contour trenches

the wall for revetment, septic tank and manholes catch water pits. (Add 25%
Extra over double the relevant rate for trenches, water supply and drainage
works for laying pipes and sewers)
v Where shoring and strutting are found necessary for the earthwork over and
above, what is contemplated in the T.N.S.S. for any of these items, they will be
paid for an extra or square metre basis.
vi The rates for earthwork do not include baling charges. The dewatering is to
be done departmentally ten per cent of cost of excavation shall be allowed for
dewatering for estimate purposes. Actual or 10 percent whichever is less may
be allowed for dewatering charges. For any expenditure above this percentage,
prior approval of the competent authority should be obtained. The rates for all
earthwork items include hand dewatering.
vii An extra 50 per cent over the rates for ordinary excavation shall apply for
excavation in all soils including hard rock with bottom width not exceeding 1.25
m and for a depth not exceeding 2m from the bottom of excavation. In case
where depth of excavation exceeds 2 m this extra rate will be limited to 2 m
from bottom of excavation.
viii An extra 25 per cent over the rates for ordinary excavation on all the soils
and rock classification given above shall be allowed for drains, channels and
canals having bed width of 1.25m to 2.00m. This extra percentage is applicable
only for depth

in ground floor (height to be reckoned from floor level i.e., Plinth level in ground
floor.)
3 Add extra Rs.21.80 per cu.m to the above rate for every upper floor over the
rate of preceding floor.
4 For the works above 4.5-m height in individual floor, the rate of next upper

5 The extra rates as allowed for building works are applicable to the irrigation
works and road works also. These extra rates may also be allowed for the
structure beyond one metre above ground level.

(II) BRICK WORK: - Note

1 The rate for brick as per standard data will apply to foundation and basement
only (basic rates)
2 Add Rs. 9.70 per cu.m to the above basic rate of brick works for walls upto
4.50m height in ground floor (height to be reckoned from floor level i.e., plinth

3 Add extra Rs. 17.00 per cu.m to the above rate for every upper floor over the
rate of preceding floor.
4 For the extra height of walls above 4.50m in individual floor, the rate of next

block and dry packing apron and revetment of 2.69 cu.m brick work only should
be taken for 2.83 m 3 of finished work).

(III) STONE MASONRY :-

1 The rate for stone masonry as per standard data will apply to foundation and
basement only (basic rates)
2 Add Rs.9.70 per cu.m to the above basic rate of stone masonry for masonry
upto 4.50m height in ground floor (height to be reckoned from floor level i.e.,
plinth level in ground floor.)
3 Add extra Rs.17.00 per cu.m to the above rate for every upper floor over the
rate of preceding floor.
4 For the extra height of walls above 4.50m in individual floor, the rate of next
upper floor may be taken.

5 The extra rates as allowed for building work are applicable to the Irrigation
and road works also. For the structure beyond one metre above ground level.

Note-2:
1 First grade stone includes hard granite, trap, etc., second grade stone
includes gneiss lime stones etc. The class of stone to be used should always
be defined in the items description, tender notice, schedules, contract
schedules, etc. For reinforced concrete work, only the hardest locally available
stone will be used if I have good bonding surface and is otherwise suitable.
Preparations for concrete are defined in the relevant standard specification.

2 Rate given is calculated from L.S. provision for steel and centering and
should only be used for estimation purpose of petty work.

6. Cornices
See remarks in standard specification brick masonry general regarding
payment.

Rates apply to arches over doors and windows, for large arches in bridges and
