Over 800 lawyers, 180 of whom are partners, advise on a comprehensive range of legal services including Corporate Finance, Commercial, Real Estate, Finance, Reconstruction & Insolvency, Financial Services, Litigation, Intellectual Property, Employment & Pensions, EU & Competition and Tax. The firms innovative approach has secured SJ Berwin LLP a number of significant awards in recent years, including UK Firm of the Year at the Global Chambers Awards 2007.

The challenge
For SJ Berwin LLP, several years of growth across Europe was increasingly reflected in the firms IT systems. Disparate operating system platforms and application versions, as well as a mix of general and specialized software had eroded overall desktop control and the ability to manage upgrades. We recognised early on that SMS 2003 would provide the operating consistency and coherence we required, recalls John Court, Project Manager with SJ Berwin. What was less clear was quite how we would get to a position of full system integration and what level of benefit we should expect from such a deployment.

Solution

The solution
During early discussions with Microsoft, 1E was mentioned as a primary source of expertise in large-scale SMS deployments. A review of the companys track record, along with that of competing organizations, confirmed to John Court that 1E had the most relevant experience and greatest breadth of technical knowledge, making it an ideal partner for the project. Shortly after our first conversation, 1E organized a requirements workshop for us, says Court. In a single day we generated enough material for the consultants to compile a detailed Statement of Work, which showed clearly how we could get to where we needed to be. The two-phase project covered the deployment of SMS 2003 across the organization, followed by a major program of desktop automation involving specialist tools from the 1E toolset across every site including the very smallest offices.

Case Study - Nomad Enterprise

Phase one began with a proof-of-concept test environment running SMS 2003, into which each UK department and section was gradually integrated. European offices were added next, using Nomad Enterprise from 1E, which specifically enables software distribution to remote branch offices which lack server support. Phase two saw the deployment of Microsoft Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007, to enable the migration of individual desktop configurations to new hardware. Nomad Enterprise enabled efficient migration of operating systems to remote branch offices lacking a local SMS server and included PXE Lite to provide OS deployment to bare metal machines at the branch. WakeUp was then installed to automate updates and ensure successful patch deployment, with a series of scripts written by 1E to enable Zero Touch Installation.

The benefits
The combination of 1E technology and expertise has produced a system which can be deployed to any hardware platform in any of our locations at a moments notice, comments John Court. This has given us faster and more flexible build and upgrade processes, allowing us a greater degree of control over the corporate desktop of over 1,000 seats. Their consultants are technically extremely proficient but very easy to work with. They share knowledge generously and met our objectives precisely. And its good to know that once the deliverables are handed over, theyre still available for check-ups, suggestions and support. The improved system coherence has also increased system visibility, providing a comprehensive inventory of all machinery and applications, enabling a more cost-effective use of existing technology. As a result of this deployment, says Court, we are anticipating significant cost-savings through better system management and reduced disruption to users and eventually through reductions in power consumption.
