COURSES IN 1st PERIOD

Business Skills and Practices, 3 cr

The objective of the study period is to introduce practices of business skills and negotiation process in
international business. In recognition of the growing importance of international business and the need to prepare
future workforce resources to operate in a multicultural environment this curriculum has been put together. The
student will understand a broad spectrum of skills and different techniques and approaches of business
communication and will be able to communicate effectively in a workforce diversity of cultures.

Customers' Service Management, 3 cr

The Service Representative course introduces customer service professionals to the fundamental principles and
techniques required for excellent customer service delivery. As the first, or principle, line of contact with
customers, this professional has a unique and challenging opportunity to influence customer perception and
loyalty. The course teaches critical skills in professionalism: communication, management of the call, the
customer, and job stress as well as service cross selling in the onsite class.

Study Tour to St. Petersburg, 3 cr

This one - week long study tour is designed to introduce the students to Russian business and academic
atmospheres at the very spot in St. Petersburg. After completion of this course the students will be able to have
an understanding of the operation of foreign and domestic companies in St. Petersburg, to know how business
transactions are carried on and to have an understanding of the study environments at both technical and
business universities in Russia.

TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS MODULE

The price of the tour is about 365 € + Russian visa fee (dependent on your citizenship, 43 € for Finnish citizens).
Certificate on travel insurance is required for the visa, which may cause extra costs. If you have no travel
insurance, the travel agency can arrange one for you. The visa applications will be managed by our travel agency
– you need not and should not contact the Russian consulates on your own!

Innovation and Product Management, 3 cr

This course establishes a framework for Product Management representing one of the key business management
functions. This course provides an introduction to the most common practices and activities carried out by middle
manager within the marketing function. It draws upon the generic marketing issues covered in Technology
Marketing Principles. The key focus of this course is on the practical issues facing someone at the Product
Manager level in the Business world. Product managers learn about the breadth of their job and how to balance
strategic with tactical activities.

European Union, 3 cr

Course contents: The basics of economical and political integration theories, the institutional structure of the EU,
EU law, EU budget and main EU policies such as internal market and competition policy, economic and monetary

as well as future prospects of the EU.

The objective of this course, therefore, is to guide students through the exciting nightmare of taking an idea or a
technology to market, growing the venture and securing a successful exit. Although grounded in rigorous theory,
the focus of the course is highly practical and class participation is actively encouraged. No prior knowledge of the
subject is required but students should be interested in the creation of wealth and the commercialisation of
technology.

Doing Business in Russia, 3 cr

After completion of this course the student is able to understand Russian culture and Russian business culture and
the Russian business meeting procedure. Also he or she understands Russia as a market area, business
environment in Russia and business operations in Russia. The student has a knowledge of how business
transactions in real life are done, being it more or less conventional type industrial sales projects, international
cooperation agreements based upon EU funding, large scale technology transfer, etc. Real exposures of activities
in St. Petersburg for a week are given during an additional excursion or study tour.

The objective of the WORKING in International Operations course is to develop awareness in the student on the

multi-cultural awareness.

Principles of Selling Skills course provide students the opportunity to apply fundamental selling. Through the use
of weekly assignments, structured activities and practical case work, students will learn about the basic skills
needed to succeed in a sales career. This course will provide the student with a roadmap that takes him or her
step-by-step through the entire sales process. Students explore the sales process and develop sales scripts that
communicate the ability to establish rapport during the approach, secure the customer desire, handle sales
resistance, and close the sale. Additional assignments will cover buyer behaviour, communication partnership
selling and value added selling and project sales.

Marketing of High-Technology Products and Innovations, 3 cr

This course is directed toward developing a better understanding of industrial marketing, the area of marketing
which addresses the needs of the industrial customer, as opposed to the needs of the individual consumer or
household. The needs of the industrial customer are very different from those of the consumer market. As a
result, the manner in which the marketing activities are directed toward the industrial customer must be unique.
