Introduction

• Lesson topic: History and Culture Lesson - Cuba

• Length of Lesson: 90 minutes

• VA Standards of Learning:

SIV.3 The student will comprehend spoken and written Spanish found in a variety of authentic sources.
1. Understand subtleties of meaning, such as intent, humor, and tone, in a variety of
culturally authentic materials, such as radio and television segments or literary passages.

SIV.7 The student will demonstrate increased understanding of the connections between content studied
in Spanish class and content studied in other subject areas.
1. Use Spanish to discuss examples of the Spanish language and Spanish-speaking
culture(s) found in other subject areas, focusing on a variety of topics such as political
systems and world literature.
2. Use Spanish to relate topics discussed in other subject areas to those discussed in Spanish
class, such as authors and artists from Spanish-speaking countries or political and
historical events that involve Spanish-speaking countries.
3. Use Spanish-language resources to continue expanding knowledge related to other
subject areas.

SIV.8 The student will discuss in level-appropriate Spanish the effects of cultural similarities and
differences on social, economic, and political relationships in the global community.
1. Discuss the role of culture in the development of relationships between the United States
and Spanish-speaking countries.
2. Analyze how members of Spanish-speaking cultures perceive the United States.
3. Examine local, regional, and national differences in the cultures of Spanish-speaking
countries and the culture(s) of the United States.

Cognitive Objectives

• Students will paraphrase authentic Spanish poetry or music in Spanish

• Students will translate the Spanish poetry or music into English

• Students will identify important historical and cultural implications reflected in the

poetry or music

• Students will analyze important historical dates and events relating to the time period

in which the poem or song was written

Materials and Advanced Preparation


Spanish Level IV - History and Culture Lesson - Cuba

• Audio file of the song “El Carretero” by Buena Vista Social Club

• Audio of file of teacher reciting the words to “El Carretero” in Spanish

• Power Point presentation of cultural and historical images of Cuba

• Computer

• Projection screen, smart board or TV to project power point presentation

Teaching and Learning Sequence

· Introduction/Anticipatory Set – 20 Minutes

• The teacher will present power point presentation of images of Cuba

• The students will watch the power point presentation

• The teacher will ask the students if they recognize any of the images

• The students will call out if they recognize an image

• The teacher will ask the students general knowledge questions about the history of Cuba

• The students will tell the class about any dates or factual information they already know

about regarding Cuba’s history

· Lesson Development –

• The teacher will give a brief lecture about Cuban historical and cultural information

• The students will ask questions about Cuba’s history

• The teacher will introduce the song El Carretero by Buena Vista Social Club as an

example of guajiro music

• The students will listen to the authentic Cuban music

• The teacher will play the audio file of herself slowly reciting the lyrics in Spanish to

assist in listening comprehension of the vocabulary


Spanish Level IV - History and Culture Lesson - Cuba

• The teacher will instruct the students to perform research and find a song or poem that is

representative of campesino life in a Central or South American country

• The students will perform research using their computers in order to find a song or poem

· Closure – 10 Minutes

• The teacher will ask the students questions regarding the relationship between artistic

works and political climates

• The teacher will inform the students of the details of their homework assignment

• The teacher will ask the students if they have any questions regarding today’s lesson

Homework

• The students will continue their research to find a poem or song. The students will

create their own audio file of them reciting the poem or song in Spanish. The

students will have to create another audio file of them reciting the poem or song as

translated by them into English. If the student has chosen a song, they must also

create an audio file of the song. The student must write a short blog post about the

historical importance and cultural and/or political implications of the song or poem.

Assessment

• Formative –

• The teacher will ask individual students to recite out loud factual information about

Cuba

• The teacher will ask students to tell the class any prior knowledge they may have

about Cuba

• Summative –

• The teacher will grade the audio files for pronunciation and accuracy of translation

• The teacher will grade the students’ blog posts for scope and depth of analysis
