Variability (Standard Deviation of Ungrouped Data). And these
are our objectives:
a. illustrates the measures of variability of a given ungrouped
data using standard deviation.
b. appreciate the value of patience in calculating standard
deviation of ungrouped data; and
c. calculates the measures of variability of a given ungrouped
data using standard deviation.

-Kindly read.

In addition, Standard Deviation is the measure of the variation - (Do as told.)

of a set of data in terms of the amounts by which the
individual values differ from their mean.
The formula of standard deviation of an ungrouped data is:
∑ 𝑑2 ∑ 𝑑2
𝑠=√ or 𝑆𝐷 = √
𝑛 𝑛
Where s or SD– standard deviation
∑ 𝑑2 – sum of squared devation
n – number of items
d - deviation from the mean(𝑥 − ̅̅̅
𝑥).

 Based from the video.

Group 1: What is the first step in calculating the standard

- I have here an activity kit that contains what you are going to
do. (Distribute the activity kit in each group). In doing this, you
have rubrics to be followed in order for you to be guided:

 Given: 3, 7, 7, 19.

Group 1: Calculate the mean.

Answer:
Group 2: Calculate the deviation from the mean. ∑𝒙 3+7+7+19 36
̅=
1. 𝒙 = = =𝟗
𝒏 4 4

2. d= (𝒙 − 𝒙̅)
= 3 − 9 = −𝟔
Group 3: Get the squared deviation, then get the sum. = 7 − 9 = −𝟐
= 7 − 9 = −𝟐
= 19 − 9 = 𝟏𝟎
̅̅̅𝟐
3. 𝒅 = (𝒙 − 𝒙)
= (−6)2 = 𝟑𝟔
= (−2)2 = 𝟒
= (−2)2 = 𝟒

Group 4: Calculate the standard deviation. = (10)2 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎

∑ 𝒅𝟐 = 144

-Do I make myself clear? ∑ 𝑑2 144

4. 𝑠 = √ = √ = √36 = 𝟔
𝑛 4
-I will give you 5 minutes to do this activity and say your yells if
you’re done and post it on the board.
-Yes,ma’am.
-Your time starts now!

-Time’s up!

- Let us check your works. (Students do the activity.)

D. Abstraction

- What is standard deviation?

Standard Deviation- is the measure of the

variation of a set of data in terms of the
amounts by which the individual values differ
-How to calculate standard deviation? from their mean.

1. Find the mean (𝑥̅ )

2. Determine the deviations d from the mean
(𝑥 − 𝑥̅ )
3. Square the deviations
4. Add all the squared deviations
5. Divide the sum by n, and
- Very Good! 6. Take the square root of the result obtained
in step 5
-The measures of variability of standard deviation is an
especially useful tool for a teacher in determining the scores of
his students how close or spread out their scores from the
mean.
