Nightingale, a British nurse, statistician, and social
reformer of modern nursing. In 1840, I begged to
my parents "to let me study mathematics, but my
mom did allow me to do so . My father also urged
me to study more appropriate subjects for a
woman, like "history and philosophy. But I
expressed my preference for mathematics .
Eventually my parents finally granted permission.
Years later, my mathematical approach saved the
British army at Scutari during the Crimean war
and provided the data that led to hospital
reforms. And that is why I am here standing in
front of you to share with you this thoughts, “Be
