They may be scanned, imported from an external source, saved images from the net or imported from drafting programmes
To open a file in Photoshop, right click (PC) or press ctrl key and select file (Mac), this will give you the OPEN WITH option showing different
application options - choose Photoshop. Fig 4.1
Alternatively open Photoshop and use FILE - OPEN (CTRL O/ APPLE O) and scroll through files to select the one you wish to open.
4.1 4.2
Once the image is open in Photoshop check mode - IMAGE MODE - and set as wished - Greyscale, RGB colour.Fig 4.2

SETTING IMAGE SIZE
Image size box appears, check all settings. 300pixels/inch is suitable for a large presentation image, but will be quite large if you intend the
image for other uses eg. email - a resolution of 75 would be more appropriate. Fig 5.2a
When changing sizes, ensure CONSTRAIN PROPORTIONS is ticked so that the image size will not be distorted. Fig 5.2b
Uncheck the resample image to maintain the pixel density of the image, enlarging the image while resampling the adjoining pixels will be
samples to increase the size of the image, this is not adviseable, it is preferable to have a base image at the right size and density at the
outset. Fig 5.2.

CHANGING CANVAS SIZE
To increase space around an image, you can change the canvas size. Fig 6.1, 6.2
The new area added to the sides can be worked on in the same way as any othe part of the image. Fig 6.3
The increased canvas area can be added to any side of the image using anchor points. Fig 6.2a
This is useful to set up a final image with the initial image positioned to suit, say if you wish to have a larger sky or increase the
peripherary!and setting of the image.
Alternatively you can work on a larger canvas size by copying the image from the original file into a new larger one.

selected in the layer palette to work with it)
- Hold the [Shift] key to limit the movement to vertical/horizontal
- The nudge arrows on the keyboard can also be used to move layers in orthagonal directions when the Move Tool (V) is selected

selected in Layer pallet the Polygon Lasso Tool, this can
be moved while the rest of the layer
remains in its original position
- You can also copy a layer from one document using the Move Tool to drag it. The Layer will keep its original name in the
new document and its original position in the original.
- Check that the image resolution is the same in both documents if you want the layer to keep its size.
- If the new documents resolution is twice that of the original, then the layer will be scaled down by 50% in the new
document.
- Alternatively you may simply select an area and copy and paste to the new document.
