1. Content and Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3: Know and apply grade-level

phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

2. Prerequisites: Students should be able to break down a word into individual sounds.

3. Essential Questions: How can I identify different sounds in a word?

4. Materials and Equipment: Whiteboard, marker, word key

5. Instructional Objective: Students will be able to identify the beginning and final sounds of

words through first letter substitution and reciting words.

6. Instructional Procedures

· Before:

 “Today, we are going to focus on the beginning and final sounds of

words.”

· During:

 Segmentation - First Letter Substitution: I will write the word gap on the

whiteboard. I will recite that word and its first sound and then tell the

students that I will be changing the first letter of the word.

o “This changes the first sound of the word and changes the word

entirely.”

 I will then change gap to cap and recite the new word I had written and

its first sound.

 I will repeat this process, saying the new word, and ask each student to

tell me what the first sound they hear is.

o “Lap, Nap, Sap, Tap, Rap, Zap, Hap, Pap, Dap”

 Segmentation - Final Sound: I will use the key to recite words. Students

will then give me the final sound they hear in that word. I will model an

example to begin.

 “Before, I wanted you to give me the beginning sound of a word.

Now, I want to hear the final sound of a word.”

o “My word is gift. The final sound I hear is /t/.”

· After:

 “Today, we learned more about how to identify the first and last sounds

of a word.”

7. Assessment: I will use my observations and answers to the questions asked to each student to

assess whether the objective was met.

8. Differentiated Instruction: I will repeat prompts and words if needed. I will provide strategies

to break down the word and identify sounds if needed.
